People argue about attention spans and word counts. But both short and long sales letters make money. The better question is: “How much uncertainty must I remove before the right buyer feels safe saying yes?”

Some say, “Nobody reads anymore,” when what they really mean is, “Nobody reads stuff they don't care about.”

Your sales letter should stop talking when the buyer stops wondering.
This may be the best line in the entire podcast. The $3,000 coaching example illustrates it perfectly: a headline, three bullets and a button may look clean, but the buyer still has six unanswered questions. Contrast that with a $29 workshop sold to a warm audience, where very little explanation may be necessary.

That leads naturally into: People don't hate long copy. They hate copy that wastes their time.

Introduce the 4D Copy-Length Test: Dollars, Doubt, Delay, Difference.

 Dollars: How much does making the wrong decision cost me—not just money, but time, effort and reputation?

Doubt: How skeptical am I about you, the claim or the offer?

Delay: How long before I actually get the promised result?

Difference: How unfamiliar or difficult to understand is what you're selling?

Then give the simple scoring system:

0–1 = Short
2 = Hybrid
3–4 = Long

Short copy isn't better copy. It's copy for a different buying situation.
Short works particularly well when trust is already high, the offer is simple, the commitment is low, the result is quick, or something else—like a webinar, referral or detailed email—has already done much of the selling.

Maybe that 200-word sales page worked because the webinar before it was the other 5,000 words of the sales letter.

Long copy should be a guided sales conversation—not a wall of text.
Every section needs a job: increase desire, build belief or remove friction. If it doesn't accomplish one of those things, cut it. The goal isn't length. The goal is belief.

This is also where I'd introduce your Accordion Principle: make the top of the page work for somebody who's ready to buy quickly, then expand downward with proof, mechanism, FAQs, comparisons and details for people who need them.

The right sales letter isn't short or long. It's complete.

Should you text or email? Well, think about it. Who texts you that actually reads them - friends, right? Have you tested the SMS process?  Is it automated or manual? The CALM Sequence:

1. Confirm the decision

Send this message immediately after purchase.

Do more than say thank you. Name the decision they made and connect it to the result they want.

Instead of:

Your payment has been received.

Try:

You are officially registered. You just took the first step toward turning your scattered follow-up into a simple system that keeps customers engaged after they buy.

Then state what happens next, when it happens, and where they should look.

The customer should finish this email thinking, I know where I am, and I know what comes next.

2. Activate a small win

Do not make the customer wait until the event, course, or product arrives to feel progress.

Give them something small and useful: a two-minute assessment, a checklist, a template, a single question to answer, or a setting to complete.

The goal is not to bury them under bonuses.

Give them one action that creates movement.

A buyer who takes one meaningful step starts seeing the purchase as progress, not an expense.

3. Lower uncertainty

Answer the questions buyers may feel silly asking.

When does it start? How long will it take? What should they prepare? What if they miss a session? Where do they log in? Who can help? What result should they expect first?

Do not confuse mystery with anticipation. Mystery before a purchase can create curiosity. Mystery after a purchase creates support tickets and refunds.

This is also the right place for a short story, testimonial, or behind-the-scenes note that shows how the experience works. Choose proof that reduces a specific fear, not applause that merely says you are wonderful.

“This changed my life” is flattering.

“I was worried I had no time, but the first lesson took 12 minutes and helped me fix my welcome email that afternoon” is useful.

4. Move them toward commitment

Before the main experience begins, ask the buyer to do something that signals participation.

Add the event to their calendar. Reply with their biggest question. Introduce themselves in the group. Complete a short worksheet. Choose the result they want to leave with.

Small commitments change the customer’s role. They stop feeling like someone who spent money and start behaving like someone who joined something.

That distinction matters.

Registration is not the end… Registration is the BEGINNING.

That tiny distinction is where most of the money quietly evaporates. Not in a dramatic “the funnel is broken” kind of way. More like a leaky garden hose behind the shed. You don’t notice it at first. Then one day you look at your numbers and wonder why 1,000 registrants turned into 43 attendees, 4 buyers, and a huge bill on your Facebook ads account. The event didn’t fail. The follow-up did. And here is where this gets interesting. The fortune has never really been in the list, the webinar, the free report, or the traffic source.

The fortune is in what happens after someone raises their hand to sign up.

That’s the part most people under develop. They spend weeks creating the webinar. Days tweaking the landing page. Hours arguing with themselves over the button color (like lime green somehow has magical conversion dust).  Then someone registers……And the pain begins. Be ready with follow-ups to get them from signups to sales. 

Just because your offer is always available doesn’t mean you can’t make it urgent for them to buy now. Marketers have a weird relationship with urgency. They know it works.

They know people procrastinate.

They know a good deadline can turn “I’ll think about it” into “Where do I put my credit card?”

But then comes the problem.

What happens when the offer is evergreen?

What happens when the sales page is always live, the checkout link always works, and the product is technically available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, whether someone buys today, next Tuesday, or three months from now while eating cold pizza on the couch?

Here is the truth: (https://www.copyandcontent.ai) Evergreen does not mean untouched. Evergreen means designed to stay relevant. There’s a big difference. A good evergreen email sequence feels personal, timely, and useful even though it’s automated. 

A bad follow up sequence feels like a broken vending machine selling expired Twinkies! (Do they actually expire?) 

Your audience can tell. They may not know what a workflow tag is. They may not know what dynamic dates are. They may not understand conditional logic, segmentation, or automation triggers. 

But they absolutely know when something feels off, looks dated, and smells strongly of BS! That tiny moment of confusion or inconsistency is where trust starts to fall apart. Not loudly. Quietly. Permanently. 

The hidden problem with evergreen email is not automation. It’s neglect.
