The Tasmanian government is considering a private members bill which would ban tobacco sales to people born after 2000. Independent Legislative Council member Ivan Dean says the aim is not to penalise young smokers, but to clamp down on supply. Tasmania's push for a tobacco-free generation is back on the agenda, with a private member's Bill to come before Parliament.  The 2000 Smoke Free Generation initiative has secured the backing of Tasmania's independent upper house and will be scrutinised by the state government. If the bill is successful, those who turn 18 in the year 2018 will be unable to purchase cigarettes. Penalities would be imposed on anyone caught supplying tobacco to the "tobacco-free generation," whether a retailer or an individual. Legislative Council Member, Ivan Dean, is preparing the bill. f1348a DEAN .10""Young people sadly are taking it up in greater numbers. This is about a product we know is dangerous and it is causing lots of issues out there with ill health."  Imperial Tobacco Australia has been meeting with members of the Legislative Council, outlining the industry's case against a ban. The company's Andrew Gregson says prohibition doesn't work and leads to black markets and criminal activity. He told SBS in a statement that the proposal is neither sensible, or practical, and would only punish retailers. However, the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Medical Association has backed the move.  Dr Tim Greenway, the AMA Tasmanian President says its a step in the right direction.  f1348b GREENWAY .10" "Anything that would stop people from starting to smoke will minimise the burden of disease caused by cigarettes." Tasmania Medicare Local says close to a third of 18 to 24 year old Tasmanians are smokers. The Island state has the second highest rate of smokers in the country, behind the Northern Territory. Respiratory specialist, Professor Hayden Walkers, says young people are more at risk of smoking-related health problems. f1348c WALKERS .10""We know that it's children between the ages of 13-15 taking up smoking, they get addicted, by the time they're in their 20s they want to stop but it's too late. I think the people who have come up with that idea are morons.
