A former potash mine in Sussex will be used to provide the province with its annual supply of road salt. The deal also comes with 16 new jobs, in addition to 34 existing jobs at the mine. Sussex mayor Marc Thorne expects businesses in the community will also benefit from serving the mine.

A Fredericton woman has made it into the New Yorker by winning the magazine's cartoon caption contest. Dawn Mockler says she is a big fan of the cartoon and submits captions for most issues of the coveted magazine. She also does her own cartoon art.

Doctor and poet Shane Neilson has a new book of poetry on the shelves, called New Brunswick. Neilson was born in Oromocto and grew up in Sheffield along the St. John River. His fifth book casts an unsparing eye on his home province, entwining history with the sacrifices of his parents.

Many students at both campuses at the University of New Brunswick will be paying more to go to school this fall. Patrick Hickey, president of the student's representative council, said the highest hike will be felt by nursing students. He suggests a smaller increase over time, to allow students to adjust.

Research scientist Benjamin de Jourdan said research on species in warm water climates is available, but little is known about the effect of certain products on Canadian species.
