Fun weird NYC history, one topic for every letter of the alphabet.

Abdullah Ali Jabir, also spelled Abdallah Ali Jaber, was a highly respected Saudi Arabian Qari (Quran reciter) and Imam. He was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 1953. His early life was marked by a strong dedication to religious studies and a remarkable talent for Quranic recitation.

Sheikh Jabir completed his memorization of the Holy Quran at a young age. He then pursued higher Islamic education, graduating from the Sharia Faculty of the Islamic University of Madinah. He continued his studies, earning a master’s degree in Islamic Jurisprudence.

He gained significant prominence and affection for his melodious and distinctive recitation style. His voice was known for its clarity, emotional depth, and adherence to the rules of Tajwid. In 1986, he was appointed as an Imam at Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque) in Mecca, one of the two holiest sites in Islam. He served in this esteemed position for several years, leading millions of pilgrims and worshippers in prayer.

Beyond his role as an Imam, Sheikh Jabir was also a respected scholar and teacher. His recitations were widely disseminated through recordings, and he remains a beloved figure among Muslims worldwide for his profound influence on Quranic recitation. He passed away in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful Quranic recitations and a profound impact on the hearts of many.

Once regarded as a cult book in the 1960s by the Flower Power generation, Siddhartha by Herman Hesse remains even today a simple and fresh tale of a man's spiritual quest. Penned by a deeply spiritual German author, Siddhartha explores multiple themes of enlightenment, thinking beyond set rules, love and humanity. 
Siddhartha is a young contemporary of the spiritual master Gautam Buddha who lived in India at some time during the 4th century BC. The story has striking parallels to Buddha's own life story in which he abandons his wealth and status as the young prince of Kapilavastu, his wife and young son and his family to embark on a voyage of self discovery. Siddhartha in the book is the son of a respected Brahmin priest and leaves the comfort and security of his home to seek the meaning of life. His close friend, Govinda, joins him and the two wander as mendicants seeking alms and spiritual guidance. They meet Gautam Buddha and are drawn to his teachings, but whereas Govinda decides to dedicate his life to the spiritual order set up by Buddha, Siddhartha continues his sojourn as he feels he must arrive at enlightenment in his own way. 
He meets many people from whom he learns valuable lessons about life and death. A ferryman, Vasudeva, teaches him about the river and the flow of life. Kamala a beautiful courtesan teaches him about physical love and how it forms an important foundation of spirituality. Kamaswami, a shrewd businessman shares the secrets of materialism. Siddhartha absorbs important teachings from all these people. The final chapters of this slim volume trace his metaphysical transformation.

He was the son of a strict and uncompromising Lutheran missionary whose belief that humans are born evil and into sin was rejected by the young Hermann. Having been exposed very early in life to the religions of Asia, Hermann was deeply conflicted. He initially trained to join the church, but was expelled for his rebellious and disruptive behavior. He was schooled at home by tutors, joined various schools which he soon left and was prone to severe depression. He continued his studies on his own and got a job as a bookstore clerk in his hometown of Calw.

“The greater reward is with the greater trial or the greater the trial or difficulty of test or hardship is then the greater the reward. And when Allah loves a person He will test them. So, he who will be pleased and then He will be pleased.” [Ibn Majah]

Sheikh Abdallah Kamel is a living example of this hadith. Blind by birth (1985), Sheikh Abdallah did not allow his physical impairment to define his life. Instead, he took over it and memorized the entire Qur’an by making use of the Louis Braille system.

The Sheikh’s melodious and unfeigned recitation of the Qur’an will stir your heart and will drive you to tears. His mesmerizing tilawah attracts large crowds who gather to offer their Salaah in tranquillity and khushoo.

Sheikh Abdallah Kamel is a highly respected man in Egypt. He graduated from Al Fayoum University in 2005 and went on to join the faculty of Dar Al Uloom in the same University.  He was also appointed to lead the Taraweeh prayers in in Badr Al Islami’s mosque. Whilst there, he would take weekly classes as well.  His work as a speaker also continued in a mosque in Al Kiman.

Besides the appointments at mosques and Universities, Sheikh Abdallah Kamel has also worked for the media. He had a television show, Nabadat Al Shaeir {The Poet Pulses) on Al Rahma channel, in addition to giving many lessons on the same channel. He has also hosted another television show called Al Muqri’at on Al Nass channel.

The Sheikh has also secured the first place in a competition called, Mizmar Al Dawud hosted on the television channel, Fajr.

Besides the appointments at mosques and Universities, Sheikh Abdallah Kamel has also worked for the media. He had a television show, Nabadat Al Shaeir {The Poet Pulses) on Al Rahma channel, in addition to giving many lessons on the same channel. He has also hosted another television show called Al Muqri’at on Al Nass channel.

The Sheikh has also secured the first place in a competition called, Mizmar Al Dawud hosted on the television channel, Fajr.
