The word home is an important word. It’s usually used to describe the place we live in like our house or apartment, but it has a much broader meaning. Outside of your actual dwelling, it can be the place you’re most comfortable. The place where your community is and the place where you feel like you belong. For people in the past, their home was a region of the world that they had grown up in for generations and it was a place they felt they would always have. Sometimes though, we get pulled from our home, never to return.

Rainfall can be a curse or a blessing. Obviously too much rainfall can cause flooding, but in places like Nevada, Arizona, and California, it can put an end to a long and deadly drought. This was the feeling of people in Northwestern Nevada in 1992 when the dry season ended and the rains started to fall. As the fall turned into winter, the cold weather turned the rain to snow. Most people enjoy an occasional snowfall, being able to play and have fun. Sometimes though, the snow ends playtime, permanently.

Prisons are used to keep dangerous people away from society. When someone commits a crime and they’re deemed a danger to others, we have to house them somewhere so they don’t have access to the general population. Of course, now you have a large building full of only the worst people on the planet and things can get a bit dicey. Most of the time, prisons have adequate security in order to keep the criminals at bay. Sometimes though, the animals break free of their cages.

Unions have long been one of the most powerful tools any group of workers have in their arsenal if they want to ensure their rights are protected. The company needs the worker to produce the product that they sell. If those workers stop making that product, the company stops making money. There’s a long history all over the world of unions successfully standing up to who’s in charge and asking for their fair share. Sometimes though, asking for more food can get your hand bitten.

Sometimes though, the people who are supposed to protect us do more harm than good.

Healthcare and education are two common reasons that people can join the service these days, but back in the 1940s, a lot of servicemen were enlisting to help with World War II. Joining the military means you are willing to do whatever it takes to protect the country from evil. Sometimes though, the country doesn’t offer the same protection.

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy. They fill the needs that some of the larger businesses can’t meet, offering niche products or services in remote locations. These smaller shops can operate in less populated areas making them more attractive to criminals who are looking for a quick score. Many small businesses do their best to provide security to their employees using cameras and security systems, but at the end of the day, employees are told to just hand over the cash in the event of a robbery. Sometimes though, the employee is what is stolen.
