Almar is a vibrant legal professional with experience in Fiduciary Services and holds a Bachelor of Laws and PG Dip Tax Law from the University of the Witwatersrand. In 2016, Almar kick-started her career at a leading financial services institution wherein she gained exposure in mostly Deceased Estates and Wills drafting. She has not looked back since then. As a Fiduciary Consultant, Almar continues to sharpen her skills whilst ensuring to make time to educate and empower others through platforms such as radio, social media, community initiatives, and authored work. Outside the office, Almar is a youth mentor, published author and entrepreneur.

Eulenda Lebese-Cussons is the founding Director of Lebese-Cussons Attorneys, a boutique law firm specialising in conveyancing and based at V&A Waterfront, Western Cape. She founded her law firm after leaving a global law firm where she worked in the real estate department. She has worked on transactions ranging from developments to residential transfers. Lubumba is an admitted attorney who specialises in Public Law, with a focus on government contracting and procurement. Lubumba also advises on administrative and constitutional issues in regulated industries such as the pharmaceutical, consumer goods and automotive sectors. She is frequently part of teams representing major clients in complex High Court review applications that are of significant public interest and importance.

 

After graduating from the University of the Witwatersrand, Lubumba completed articles at Webber Wentzel. She then worked as an Associate in the firm’s Dispute Resolution department before taking up a prestigious clerkship at the Constitutional Court of South Africa under the now retired Justice Edwin Cameron. Thereafter, Lubumba was privileged to be able to travel abroad to complete an LL.M degree in Constitutional Law, Corporate Governance and Public Policy at the illustrious Harvard Law School. She capped off her time abroad by completing a year-long fellowship at the Global Network for Public Interest Law, headquartered in New York. Lubumba has been in practice for four years and is currently a senior associate in the Public Law and Regulatory practice of a big five law firm in Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

In her personal time, Lubumba serves on the Board of a non-profit she helped co-found with other young professionals concerned about the systemic challenges facing South Africa’s education system. She believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty in disadvantaged communities. Lubumba has an LLB degree (cum laude) from the University of the Witwatersrand and an LLM degree from Harvard Law School.

Christy Chitengu holds a Bachelor of Arts in law and Development Studies as well as an LLB degree from the University of Johannesburg. Christy is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Migration and Displacement fulltime at the University of the Witwatersrand’s African Centre for Migration Studies as a Mandela Rhodes Scholar. She is also a constitutional court foreign law clerk to Justice Majiedt. Christy Chitengu is an activist at heart and throughout her undergraduate studies, she worked at Section 27 and Lawyers for Human Rights focusing on access to education, healthcare as well as migrant and refugee rights. Christy has published opinion pieces in the Saturday Star, Daily Maverick and New Age wherein she addresses racism, healthy eating and the literacy crisis in schools, her most recent piece was on second class citizenship and the challenges thereof. Faith Sikhavhakhavha is a Director at Werksmans Attorneys in the General Litigation Department, specialising in dispute resolution, administrative law, procurement law and insolvency. She advises on general commercial litigation, including contractual litigation, business crimes and financial regulation. Faith has been with Werksmans since 2012.

She obtained her LLB degree from the University of Witwatersrand where she also assisted as a tutor during the latter years of her studies.

Faith has co-authored in legal handbooks and articles including a chapter in the Research Handbook on Climate Change Mitigation Law; a chapter in the Corporate Governance Review; and Dispute Resolution Global Guide South Africa.

Karabo Mokgonyana is a final year Candidate Legal Practitioner and holds a BCom(Law) and LLB from the University of Witwatersrand. She is currently completing a Masters in International Law at the same institution. Besides her legal career, Karabo is an award winning youth and gender activist who has worked with organisations like UN Agencies (UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP, etc.), the Commonwealth and the African Union in human rights protection work.

Atlegang Govuza is an admitted attorney who has been in practice for 5 years. Her main area’s of focus have been in public law and previously in intellectual property law. She completed her articles at Adams & Adams and was an Associate in the Trade Mark Prosecution team. Atlegang then left practice to do a graduate program at Toyota South Africa. After her journey at Toyota, Atlegang returned to practice (Kisch IP) as an Associate in Trade Mark enforcement. During her career in the legal profession, Atlegang has also clerked at the Constitutional Court during 2020/2021 for Justice Jafta who has since retired. Thereafter joined Richard Spoor Inc as a public interest attorney. She recently joined ENS as an Associate in Public Law and some mergers and acquisitions matters. Atlegang holds Bcom Law, LLB and LLM (Labour) qualifications, and when she’s not practicing law she plays the bass guitar as part of the praise and worship team at church and tutors Grade 8 Math in Alex.

On our young professional/student feature today we are joined by Samukelisiwe Mbuthuma who is a LLB and LLM (Constitutional Litigation) graduate from Umlazi, Durban. She is currently serving her Articles of Clerkship. Other than committing herself to her work, she commits herself to serving the community by writing legal articles about important and relevant topics in an easy-to-understand manner. She has contributed to platforms such as Sister In Law. Furthermore, she has written and translated legal articles into isiZulu which went on to be published in a local newspaper. Her goal was to make the law accessible to members of the community who do not understand English and legal jargon. She strives to continue to contribute towards the development of the law by doing what she loves, writing.

Tandiwe Matshebela is currently a Director at a top 5 law firm in Sandton. She was born and raised in Tembisa where she completed her primary and high schooling career. She obtained her LLB with distinction from the University of Limpopo and she also has an LLM in corporate law from University of Witwatersrand.

Tandiwe’s main areas of practice are Insolvency, Business Rescue & Restructuring. She specialises in all areas of corporate and commercial litigation, including mining-related litigation; company-law-related litigation; contractual litigation; and shareholder and directors’ litigation. Zaryl Manentsa is an advocate practicing under Group One Advocates. She obtained her LLB from the University of KwaZulu Natal and thereafter commenced her articles at a top 5 law firm in Johannesburg. During her tenure as an attorney Zaryl’s practice areas included employment law and competition law. Zaryl answered the call to the bar in 2018 after realizing that she needed an environment where she could actively make an impact and a notable difference in people’s lives by being at the forefront of representing their legal issues. She currently focuses on the areas of labour law, administrative law and land claims. She has appeared in the High Court, Labour Court and Land Claims Court and has chaired a number of disciplinary hearings. Katlego Mokoena obtained her law degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. After obtaining her undergrad she studied and obtained her post graduate diploma in corporate law at the University of Johannesburg whilst completing the compulsory Practical Legal training (PLT). She started her legal career when she joined the National Prosecuting Authority under the Aspirant Prosecutor Program.  She then started prosecuting in the district courts and shortly after went to act as a Regional Court Prosecutor.  Having completed her PLT in order to be admitted as an Attorney Katlego left the NPA and pursued to complete her articles at Legal Aid South Africa. She is an admitted Attorney of the High Court.

From Articles she went on to practice for her own account as one of the Directors under the name and style Mokoena and Dhlamini Attorneys Incorporated. 5 years after that she got an opportunity to act as a Magistrate stationed in Soweto. She was recently appointed as a permanent Magistrate in 2021.

Katlego has been in the legal fraternity for 12 years and an admitted attorney for 9 years. When ones looks at her short track record she has literally been on all sides of the fence. A State Prosecutor, A Defence Attorney and now the bench being a Magistrate.

Katlego is pursuing her studies as she plans to equip herself in understanding the multifaceted aspects of the law.
