  • Intellectual Honesty
If you reflect for a second, clear thinking is not usually the goal we have in mind. We are usually after a combination of quick, simple, or easy thinking. However, none of those things are particularly accurate and won’t lead you to the answers you seek. Unfortunately, it’s what we are wired to do, and it takes conscious effort to slow down and be thorough. Most of the time, we also want to quell our sense of uncertainty, which leads us to conclusions that, while speedy, are not focused on accuracy. Intellectual honesty is about seeking plain and unadulterated truth.

  • What Am I?
Riddles are phrases or questions framed in the form of puzzles that require all types of thinking to deduce its answer or some double meaning underlying its words. They employ several different patterns of thinking, challenging us to work with limited information in unique ways. No one style of thinking is better than the other. Each is useful in different situations, and we must grasp how to apply them correctly. This is exactly what riddles help us learn, since it involves many different thinking styles.

  • The Social Animal
Social intelligence is about how to fit in, charm people, and allow socializing to help rather than hinder you in achieving your goals. Luckily, there are fairly predictable ways to do this, and that’s because we have millennia of data and behavioral patterns to study. Most of the tactics can relate in some way back to primitive, instinctual ways humans navigated the world. We’re the same as we were back then—we just have fancier clothes now.
It’s been hypothesized that our brains actually grew and developed as a result of needing to be social—for hunting, for procreation, and for general survival tactics. Communication is what sets us apart from most of the animals in the world.
At the heart of it all, this simply means that human are social animals. If we go into isolation, we go crazy. If we feel loneliness for an extended period of time, it literally kills us. The more we are around people, the happier we tend to feel in general, and this becomes especially apparent when we study the elderly.

  • The Balance of Assertiveness
Assertiveness requires a delicate balance, especially if you are new to it. You may have started as too passive, but take care to not swing into the aggressive territory where you are robbing other people of their needs. You can’t control what others do or how they might respond to you, but you can control your own behavior.
Tony Robbins succinctly articulated the six needs of human happiness you are likely keeping yourself from as a result of lacking assertiveness. They are certainty, variety, significance, love and connection, growth, and contribution. This is what’s at stake every time you come to a fork in the road and consider shrinking away from the moment. It’s not trivial, and can lead to a life you want, or a life you don’t.

  • The Nature of Uncertainty
Uncertainty is a very uncomfortable concept to wrap our minds around. The human brain highly prefers a concrete answer, thought, or even guess. It’s why we jump to conclusions and prioritize speed over accuracy. Learning to thrive in the limbo of uncertainty can greatly benefit your thinking skills because it teaches you to slow down, check your assumptions, put away your ego, and embrace the ultimate version of “I have no idea.” Once you can accept this starting point, the world will suddenly open up—because you are listening and observing.
We kick off with a thought experiment dubbed Plato’s Cave. It tells the tale of prisoners shackled in a dark cave facing inside, so the only thing they can see is a series of shadows from people, animals, and events going on outside. Of course, this is not the real world—from our vantage point. But to them, these shadows are everything, and it is unthinkable that anything else exists. So the question comes—how can we ever know if what we are seeing is merely a shadow, or the true form and nature of the thing? Of people? Of ourselves? Accept that perception is necessarily flawed, and attempt to think from the ground up.

  • Inside Stories
Stories can be the basis for an inside joke - something that comes up multiple times with the same person and evokes a positive emotion. It’s the same topic brought up in a different context. Thus, you just need to call back to a story through a conversation and there’s a good chance it will stick as a “Remember when we talked about…” moment. The more you use it, the more a unique bond is created between only the two of you.

  • Double Explanations and Better Compliments
Regardless of who you’re talking to, you’re likely to be asked the same set of generic questions. These include what do you do, how was your day, and others like these. You’ll want to have two separate answers prepared for such questions, one of which is interesting and unique (the layman explanation), while the other is more informative (the expert explanation). Being too esoteric upon first meeting someone isn’t always helpful, and can confuse and render others speechless.
Learn to give good compliments. This is also deceptively easy. Compliment things that people have control over, or made a choice about. Don’t choose genetic qualities like height or eye color; instead choose things that people actively put effort into. People feel comfortable and flattered, and then start to open up.

  • The Runaway Trolley
A prime example of mulling around solutions and perspectives for which a million variables exist is the Trolley Problem. Would you rather allow one person to die or five? This is a classic thought experiment that forces you into a series of escalating moral dilemmas. It makes you consider who you are, and what you value, and why that is. In the end, nothing is solved or clarified, except your own thoughts. There is no answer except to systematically learn and explore.

  • The Story Spine
The story spine is more or less the formula for every movie that exists. It’s a simple framework that you can use in your everyday stories and conversations, because it teaches you what emotional beats exist in a story. There is the status quo, the event that kicks things off, the set of consequences for changing the status quo, the climax or resolution, and then what happens after the fact.

  • Free Association
If your mind goes blank, use a technique called free association to generate a response. These are words that immediately come to mind upon hearing something. For example, if someone talks about cats, practice free association with the provided exercises, and you’ll be able to come up with answers more quickly and easily. Conversation as a whole is just a series of interrelated responses and stories, so free association is practicing conversation flow.
