Most foods contain more or less chemicals that have entered them from soil, water, or during the manufacturing process.
Chemicals in foods cause trillions in damage.
An international group of researchers examined the effects of the four most common chemicals in the food system.
Synthetic chemicals endanger health and the environment and cost trillions of dollars each year. That is the result of the study Invisible Ingredients (“invisible ingredients”), published in December, which deals with the four most frequent synthetic chemicals in the food system. According to the study, bisphenols, pesticides, PFAS, and phthalates have serious consequences for humans and nature.
You can hardly escape them, even if you grow your vegetables pest‑free yourself and milk the cow by hand. Whether phthalates as plasticizers in plastic gloves, PFAS in the soil and in pans, bisphenols in water pipes, or chemicals in plastic containers — they are everywhere, even in the air. When food is produced and processed on an industrial scale, of course there are a few more sources of contamination: conveyor belts, milking machines, plastic film, seals, and pizza boxes, for example.
3 Trillion Dollars in Damage Each Year
The four groups of chemicals investigated contribute significantly to rising cancer rates, developmental disorders, and infertility, and they destroy the foundation of global agriculture, the researchers list.
Overall, these impacts alone cost the world economy around 3 trillion dollars each year. Between 1.4 and 2.2 trillion fall on the health system, and
