Barnaby Furnas was born and raised in Philadelphia and lives and works in NYC. Barnaby earned his BFA at the School of Visual Arts and his MFA at Columbia Univeristy.

Barnaby has had solo shows at Marianne Boesky Gallery staring in 2002. He’s also had solos at The Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, Victoria Miro in London, the MCA in Denver, Anthony Meier in San Francisco amongst many others.

He’s had tons of group shows too numerous to list but highlights would be the MCA Tuscon, the Frist in Nashville, the Albright Knox, The Warhol Museum, etc.

His work has been covered in all the art publications and he’s in the collections of the Albright Knox, the MCA in Chicago, the MCA in LA, SFMOMA, the Whitney and more.

Brian met up with Barnaby at his solo show which just finished up at Boesky titled “Frontier Ballads” and they talked about his early graffiti days in Philly, how he found his physical approach to painting, flirting with jail time and much more.

Brian spoke with legend Chris Martin for Episode 100 !!! of the podcast. Chris talks about early days in NYC, Basquiat, William Burroughs and laundry.

Tessa Perutz is an artist currently based in New York City yet about to move to Europe. She was born in 1988 and in addition to making art she also curates Massif Central a collection of silk scarves by contemporary artists.

She received her BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and also studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. She has shown at Pablo’s Birthday, Serving the People, Joshua Liner, Atlanta Contemporary, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Dayspace in Philadelphia, Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco and others.

She’s had residencies in Berlin, San Francisco and Iceland and her work has been covered in Artforum, uxtapoz, Milk Magazine, Modern Painters, ArtInfo and many others.

From February 15th to March 15, 2018, Pablo's Birthday Gallery in NYC exhibited Karma Solaire, a solo show by Tessa that was created in remembrance of her close friend, the artist and poet, Paul Saeio. Brian met Tessa on the last day of her show at the gallery and they spoke about her growing up dj’ing, skateboarding, writing, a run in with Nan Golden, experimenting in work and much more.

Chris Bogia was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1977. He received his BFA at New York University and MFA from Yale University, and currently lives and works in Queens, NY. Bogia is the Director and co-founder of Fire Island Artist Residency (FIAR), the first LGBTQ artist residency in the world, located in Cherry Grove, on Fire Island, NY, as well as an instructor of sculpture at New York University. Bogia is the recipient of a 2018 Queens Council for the Arts grant, the 2017 Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Artist Community Engagement Grant, the 2015 Tiffany Foundation Grant, and is a current artist-in-resident at the Queens Museum Studio Program 2016-2018. Recent exhibitions include shows at the Queens Museum, CF Hill Gallery, Stockholm, Kate Werble Gallery, Ortega y’ Gasset Projects in Brooklyn, and a solo presentation at Spring Break Art Show. Upcoming shows include a two person exhibition with Jesse Harrod at Grizzly Grizzly in Philadelphia this coming May, and Cast of Characters, curated by Liz Collins at The Bureau of General Services: Queer Division NYC this summer.  

Brian spoke with Chris on the heels of his show at the Spring Break Art Show and they spoke about his early days sneaking off to Philly and New York City, older siblings, the allure of fabric, his starting a residency, becoming an artist and much more.

Geoff McFetridge is an artist and designer based in Los Angeles California. Born in Canada, Geoff studied at the Alberta College of Art and got his MFA from CalArts.

For two years, McFetridge was art director for the acclaimed underground Beastie Boys magazine Grand Royal. Since then he has started the design studio Champion Graphics, which has produced projects for numerous clients ranging from Nike, Pepsi, Stussy, Burton Snowboards, Girl Skateboards, and Patagonia. Geoff has made videos for Plaid, Simian, Erlend Oye fronted band The Whitest Boy Alive, and film title sequences for The Virgin Suicides and Adaptation. In 2013, McFetridge designed all interface graphics for the feature film Her, directed by Spike Jonze.

Geoff has all along maintained a non-stop drawing practice and makes paintings as well. He’s had solo shows at V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, Joshua Liner Gallery in New York, Cooper Cole in Toronto, New Image Art in LA amongst many others.

Brian met up with Geoff at the site of his solo show, The Beringians, at Half Gallery and they talked about his formative days in Canada, skateboarding, computers, punk rock, working across disciplines, electronic music and much more.

Shirley Kaneda is an artist living and working in New York City. Shirley was born to Korean born parents in Tokyo and moved to New York City to attend Parsons where she received her BFA in 1976.

Shirley has had over 25 solo shows at venues such as Jack Shainman, Feigen Contemporary, Galerie Shuster, Mark Moore, Danese Gallery, Galerie Richard and more.

She has been in group exhibitions too numerous to mention in venues such as White Columns, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Chelsea Art Museum, Acme, Rhona Hoffman and many, many more. Her paintings have been covered in Art in America, the New Yorker, Art on Paper, the New York Times, Time Out, Art News amongst many others.

On top of her long legacy of making and showing her art, Shirley is also a highly regarded art professor who has taught at Claremont, Parsons and most recently at Pratt where she taught from 2003 until just this year when she retired.

She also has pusblished interviews in Bomb magazine with artists Fiona Rae, Fabian Marcaccio, Johnathan Lasker and others.

Brian stopped by Shirley’s amazing SoHo loft studio and they spoke of her days growing up in Tokyo, moving to the US, being in SoHo in the early unpolished days, music choices in the studio, playing guitar and much more.

KEVIN APPEL was born, lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his BFA from Parsons School of Design in New York in 1990 and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1995.

Kevin was in town for his installation of works at the ADAA ART SHOW up through March 3rd with Miles McEnery Gallery and he stopped by Brian’s apartment in Brooklyn and they chatted about painting, jazz, architecture and more.

Polina Barskaya is an artist who was born in1984 in the Ukraine who lives and works in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. She studied at the Pratt Institute and Hunter College. Polina has exhibited nationally. Her work has recently been included in shows at Honey Ramka, Monya Rowe Gallery, Adam Baumgold Gallery and John Davis Gallery in Hudson. Brian visited Polina at her Brighton Beach home studio and they talked about her youth always on the move, family, scale in painting, her love/hate relationship to New York and much more.

Michael Stamm was raised in Evanston, Illinois. He received his BA from Wesleyan University and an MA in English Literature from Columbia University before earning an MFA from New York University. He attended the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in 2016. Michael was awarded the John Imber Painting Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center. His first solo exhibition, Just Like This Please, was presented at Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York in 2016. His work has also been included in several group exhibitions, including shows at Underdonk, Brooklyn; ASHES/ASHES, Los Angeles; and Galerie Tobias Naehring in Leipzig. Residencies include the Mountain School of Arts in Los Angeles and Yaddo.Michael’s most recent solo exhibition, Mediation Inc, was presented at DC Moore in January 2018.

Brian met up with Michael in his Brooklyn studio to talk about literature, film, music and much more.

Loie Hollowell was born in 1983 in Woodland, California. She earned a BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Originating in autobiography, her paintings explore themes of sexuality, often through abstractions of the human body with an emphasis on female forms. Using strong colors, varied textures, surface build-up and geometric symmetry, her works evoke bodily landscapes that allude to specific body parts in the form of symbols such as Mandorlas and Ogees. Hollowell has had solo exhibitions with Pace gallery in Palo Alto, CA, and is about to open a solo exhibition in March at Pace Hong Kong. She has also had solo exhibitions at Feuer/Mesler gallery in Manhattan and at 106 Green gallery in Brooklyn. She's been in group exhibitions at Anton Kern in NYC, White Cube and Massimo De Carlo in London, Kohn gallery and The Landing in LA, and at Ballroom Marfa in Texas. Brian met up with Loie in her Brooklyn studio and they had an engaging talk about growing up the child of a painter and teacher, the meaning and symbolism of her paintings, the environment, drawing versus painting, all the while joined by her two active cats who tried their best to join in the podcast.
