Sound and Vision

Julie Heffernan is a painter who lives and works in Brooklyn. Julie earned her BFA from UC Santa Cruz and her MFA from Yale. She has had museum shows at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, The Palmer Museum, Mennello Museum, the LSU Museum of Art, the Witherspoon, the Mint and others. She’s has solo shows at PPOW, Mark Moore, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Megumo Ogita, just to name a few. She’s been in countless group shows from Forum Gallery, to Wave Hill, to the National Arts Club, to about hundreds more.

She has received an NEA Grant, a NYFA grant, a McDowell Fellow and a Yaddo Fellow and her work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Norton Museum, The Palmer Museum, the Nation Academy Museum and many others. Her work has been written about in any art publication you can think of.

She also co-runs Painters on Paintings a blog that weekly features artists writing about a painting that informs or inspires them. She is also a Professor at Montclair University.

Brian stopped by Julie’s studio as she prepares for her September show at PPOW and they spoke about emotional painting, Al Held, her son’s music, Corbet being braggy and so much more.

Will Weisenfeld is a musician who is known by his stage name Baths. He was born in Tarzana and was raised in Woodland Hills. He currently resides in Culver City, Los Angeles and he records on the Anticon label.

Will is a classically trained musician, and began learning the piano at the age of four and he recorded his first piece of music at age fourteen. He released a few projects, including an album entitled The Fabric, as his previous moniker, [Post-foetus]. He also ventured into a more ambient style with side-project Geotic.

Will released the debut Baths album Cerulean on Anticon in 2010. It was listed by The A.V. Club as the 21st best album of 2010 It also made Pitchfork Media's "Album of the Year: Honorable Mention" list.

On November 16, 2017, he released his fourth album, Romaplasm.

Fred Tomaselli is an artist born in Santa Monica who is based out of New York City.

He’s had solo shows at the Metropolitan Museum, the Orange County Museum, James Cohan, the Brooklyn Museum, White Cube, The Rose Museum, the Albright-Knox, Site Santa Fe, the Whitney Museum and many others. He’s been included in group shows at the Aspen Art Museum, LAMOCA, the Whitney Biennial, the Berlin Biennale, and at MoMA just to name a few.

His work is in the collection of the Addison Gallery of American Art, the

Tony Matelli is an artist who was born in Chicago and lives and works in New York City.

Tony received his BFA from the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 1993 and his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1995. He is represented by the Marlborough Gallery.

He’s had solo shows at Marlborough, The State Hermitage Museum in Russia, The Aldrich Museum in Connecticut, The Davis Museum in Massachusetts, the Bergen Kunstmuseum in Denmark, Palais de Tokyo in Paris and many, many more.

He’s shown in group shows too numerous to list. He’s received an NYFA Grant and is in the collections of over twenty museums around the world.

Sarah Cain is an artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Sarah received a BFA in 2001 from The San Francisco Art Institute in San Francisco, CA and then received a MFA in 2006 from the University of California at Berkeley. That same year she attended Skowhegan. Sarah is a recipient of the 2011 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; the 2008 Durfee Grant; the 2007 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant; and the 2006 SECA Art Award, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Sarah has had solo exhibitions at Adobe Books in San Francisco, CA; Anthony Meier Fine Arts in San Francisco, CA; a site-specific installation at Elk Camp, in collaboration with Aspen Art Museum, Aspen CO; Cardi Black Box, Milan, Italy; CTRL Gallery in Houston, TX; Five Thirty Three Gallery in Los Angeles, CA, Galerie Lelong, New York, NY, Honor Fraser, Los Angeles, CA, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and many more.

Erin M. Riley is a visual artist who lives and works in Brooklyn and received a MFA from Tyler School of Art and BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Erin’s work has been exhibited at Vancouver Art Gallery, Hashimoto Contemporary, Dovecot Gallery, Freize London and many others. Erin is represented by P.P.O.W. Gallery, and Erin’s first solo exhibition with the gallery, Used Tape, runs through June 30. Erin is also a two time MacDowell Fellow, a past resident at Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, the Vermont Studio Center, the McColl Center for Visual Art, VCCA and others. Erin’s work has been published in magazines such as Cultured magazine, American Craft, Wall Street Journal, and New American Painting.

Guimi You is as artist who was born in Seoul, South Korea and lives and works in New York. She received her BFA and MFA from the Seoul National University and also received a Masters in painting from the Royal College of Art in London. She has had exhibitions at Kwanhoon Gallery in Seoul, Kakiden Gallery in Tokyo, A.P.T. Gallery in London, Bonington Gallery in Nottingham, Kristian Day in London and her current solo show called ‘Mystical Moist Night Air’ at Monya Rowe Gallery in NYC.

In 2016 she attended the residency at the Vermont Studio Center and in 2017 she was a resident at MassMoCA.

Brian sat down with Guimi at her show at Monya Rowe and they spoke about her many travels and relocations, playful painting, dancing and even some K-pop.

Sean Landers is an artist based out of New York City. Born in 1962 in Palmer, Massachusetts, Sean received his B.F.A. from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1984, and his M.F.A. from the Yale University School of Art in 1986. Sean is represented by Friedrich Petzel Gallery in New York, China Art Objects in Los Angeles, greengrassi in London, Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo and Galerie Rodolphe Janssen in Brussels.

Sean’s work is represented in numerous museum and public collections including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Denver Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Tate Modern, London, Sammlung Hoffman, Berlin, and more.

Ellen Berkenblit is a painter who was born in Paterson, New Jersey and graduated from the Cooper Union in 1980. She received an Arts and Letters grant from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2013, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in the following year. She has solo shows at the Anton Kern Gallery, The Drawing Center, Rodolphe Janssen, Susanne Vielmetter, White Columns and group exhibitions at many venues including Gladstone Gallery, MOMA, Brand New Gallery, the MCA in Chicago, the Centre Pompidou, Derek Eller, Essex Flowers and the New Museum.
