Sped Teacher Small Talk-Writing IEP Goals

Listen Later

Welcome to the 6th installment of the Sped Teacher Small Talk series with co-host Paul Hubbard, where  we dive into a randomly generated topic each month.

This month we are discussing the crux of our jobs as special educators...Writing IEP goals.

Paul uses a great analogy within this episode about how a good goal and strong progress monitoring techniques are like dropping water on the same spot on a rock...over and over and over...And how in doing so, the water will eventually begin to make an impact on the rock.

Listen in as we discuss:

  • The importance of having strong IEP goals
  • The challenge of generic and non-individualized goals in IEPs
  • The purpose of an IEP goal: Guiding instruction and interventions
  • Elements of the SMART framework for writing effective goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound
  • The need for goals that have a meaningful impact on the student's education and personal growth.

Mentioned in the episode:
Sentence Writing Rubric

Tool to help you write strong IEP goals:
IEP Digital Goal Bank
