KEY TAKEAWAYS
- The first question I ask my students is what made them decide to come to school to learn about hair, skin or nails? Nine times out of 10 they say that they had trouble with their own skin and want to learn not just to look after their skin but to help others. For those that struggle to open up about their ‘why’, we highlight whatever we do like about their appearance – their eyes, hair, long beautiful nails – and say let’s work with that and showcase it in the ways that we do our services. Positive reinforcement is key as well.
- Not all men, but from what I’ve seen over the past 17 years in this industry is, most men have a very simplified skincare routine and they’re using really harsh ingredients on their skin: 3-in-1 soaps, bar soaps, soaps that have fragrance in them. You should make sure you have good skincare products for men that are out there that don’t have feminine fragrances, banding etc and drink plenty of water, men generally get away with having a poorer diet than women, but take care of what your eat and drink because it will affect your skin and hair and most men don’t think that way.
- As well as a teacher I’m also a pageant queen. Throughout my life I’ve been able to mentor young women and girls throughout pageantry and representing my current title, which is Mrs Pennsylvania Galaxy, I’ve talked to women of all ages, sizes and genders and it all starts with having a general conversation, talking to them about something else other than their skin, getting to know them, sitting down with these girls and telling them that I do care about them, I want to be able to help them, that I understand their concerns and that I can relate to them.
- We need to come up with a way to reuse, reduce and recycle. I think that we’re moving in this direction but not fast enough. The cosmetic industry, as a whole, has a lot of ways that it can take part in to reduce our waste and to embrace that by helping and educating the next generation to cut down on product waste, usage, making sure we’re using the correct ratio of the product and educating clients and students to recognise which ingredients are good and which are bad.
BEST MOMENTS
‘By taking care of what you’re given, rather than change your appearance, that actually is your beauty.’
‘Have a day where you and your partner or friends – male or female – can go to the spa and get pampered. Men may not feel that’s very masculine but taking care of your skin helps to reduce stress, and is a great way to spend time with people.’
‘Embrace the bald! Bald is beautiful! Your hair does not define you; you do.’
‘I’m a beauty queen because it allows me to serve my community in such a bigger impact.’
ABOUT THE GUEST
Heart Health Awareness with an emphasis of “Heart Health at Any Age”. Sandahl Taylor chose this platform for several passionate reasons. Not only did her father, a US Navy veteran suffer from a heart attack and stroke, she learned she too had a heart condition herself at the age of 28. In addition to many of her friends that have family members who are affected as well, it is the number one cause of death in America. Sandahl has already made huge strides in her platform, and is planning on continuing her efforts with The American Heart Association near her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA and throughout the State.
Sandahl graduated from the South Hills Beauty Academy, in Dormont, PA with a license as a Cosmetology Instructor/Teacher. She is also a licensed cosmetologist and is currently attending classes in the Cosmetology Master Educator Program.
In 2015, Sandahl married SSG Kenneth Taylor, veteran of the US Army, who currently works as an IT support specialist near Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to proudly being a military spouse, Sandahl is a mother, daughter, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend to many retired and current members of the United States Armed Forces. As a way to give back, she has spent the last few years providing complimentary haircuts through The Veterans Leadership Programs, annual events as well as through several events at her place of employment. She also has volunteered for a few years at several events for The American Heart Association, raising awareness, and funds to help support her platform and become an advocate for heart health. Some of the events she had the honour of volunteering for are the Annual Heart Ball, Annual Heart Walks, and she even founded her own event called “Style for the Heart.”
Mrs. Taylor is currently an educator, and teaches Cosmetology, Esthetics, and Nail Technology. Sandahl and Kenneth are the proud parents of two wonderful children, and also have nieces and nephews. Sandahl’s hobbies include: singing, dancing, modelling, writing, and spending time with her family, as well as reading with her children.

ABOUT THE HOST
Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.
Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.
Why?
Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!
How?
Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.
