  • Big Fish Little Fish

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about an experience he had recently of swimming in a pool that he was sharing with a couple of other people, some of whom were not adhering to the rules of the pool and how he turned frustration into joy by being aware of both his feelings and those of the people around him.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A child started swimming across the lanes down which us three swimmers were doing lengths. Eventually he did start doing lengths, but he was bobbing up and down for breath and swam across out paths and that frustrated me, because I was distracted I couldn’t dedicate 100% to my practice.
    • I thought, this kid needs to be encourage, and his skills need to be nurtured if he wants to be a swimmer. I got a float and went back to the pool and told him he was doing really great, which seemed to surprise him. I gave him the float and told him to put it between his legs and try the front crawl, which he does and begins to swim better and faster.
    • What was that little fish doing in the big fish’s world? The big fish didn’t want the little fish in his world, but he came to realise he needed the small fish in his world. A small fish can never become a big fish and lead, and impact change, unless encouraged and nurtured. It’s such an important time where one interaction can impact a child’s later life.
    • It’s really important for us as a society, a community, a business, whatever your area of leadership is, to empower and enable those in the food chain below you. It’s almost your responsibility and duty to do so. In this way we can impact and create the world that we want to live in.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I wasn’t listening to music and ended up listening to my inner voice and perhaps my head wasn’t in the right mindset.’

‘He didn’t like the idea that he wasn’t in control, with this float rocking him around.’

‘I love swimming, it’s a great sport that you can do anywhere; in a river, a lake or a pool.’

‘We need to become more aware of our surroundings.’

  • Meditation And Manifesting Success With Graham Scheiblich Part 2

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined for the second part of their chat by entrepreneur and intuitive business coach Graham Scheiblich who talks about how to centre yourself, how to meditate and the benefits of meditation in all aspects of your life, from business to personal relationships. In this half of the conversation, Graham turns the tables somewhat on Gavin and things get deep.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • As an entrepreneur, you’ll be surrounded by a lot of noise. It’s important to stay aware of current affairs, but you have to see yourself as a separate creative being. Knowing yourself in your environment is something you should spend some time in – people usually only experience this at huge life events like the birth of a child or the death of a loved one. When we experience ourselves like this intentionally, we see that we have greater choice and power of creativity over how we move about in the world and our environment. It brings a different perspective.
    • Be aware of the stories we tell and the mythologies we place around ourselves and spend a few moment with the times in our lives where we might have taken on more than we were ready to, developmentally, and it’s had an effect on us and we haven’t given ourselves the time and the space to allow ourselves to be the vulnerable person who had expectations about themselves and we’ve carried that through to today.
    • If we allow ourselves to spend some time with the felt sense, the pain that’s locked away and allow our bodies to release that, we’re not carrying such a heavy load anymore. If you’ve got a sports car in the garage and it’s full of luggage, it’s not going to perform very well.
    • Success and freedom mean something different to everybody. It’s easy to set goals that are inappropriate to who you are. If you’re out of touch with who you are, it’s really easy to measure yourself against what other people have. Always know yourself well enough to know what’s right for you. Celebrate the little wins you generate in your everyday life. Sometimes success is just a feeling, checking in with your body in the morning. Start from there and build a framework to get where you want to go filled with good stuff. Success will come quickly from there.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Never feel like a wallflower in a group presentation. A good leader will focus on that wallflower and get them to speak and usually they’ll floor everyone because they’ve been sitting back, listening and taking it all in.’

‘These are the stories that contain the raw material that people carry around with them all the time, unresolved.’

‘The stories we tell about ourselves don’t allow us to liberate ourselves from the conditions that we or the world have put on ourselves.’

‘With our mind we create the world, but before the mind creates the world the world created our mind. We don’t always know what we’re carrying with us.’

  • Staying Accountable

In this episode of the podcast Gavin discusses what accountability is, what it means to be held accountable and what does and accountsability partner do?

You can donate to Gavin’s JustGiving page for The Ocean Cleanup by clicking here: https://bit.ly/3DRZefO

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to The Ocean Cleanup, so it's the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Accountability is the fact or condition of being accountable, or responsible. Lack of accountability has eroded public interest in business and political leaders.
    • Questions arise when you are held accountable by someone else, not just that you did what you say but why you’re doing it, how you did it, etc. This is a positive; they are helping you be the best version of yourself and grow.
    • An accountability partner is someone that you can trust to hold you accountable, whether that’s a friend or family member that checks in on you on a weekly basis. If you don’t have one, or you’re scared of talking to someone close to you about being accountable, email in to the show and we’ll help find you one.
    • Whatever it is you’re doing you need to be following your passion, don’t keep brutalising yourself to follow something that doesn’t fulfil you. Don’t rely on habit. Your ego doesn’t like change, even if you think you do. If you cannot stand guardian to the door of your mind you aren’t going to be able to change a habit.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘When you are held accountable, simply put, you are held to do what you say.’

‘To have a level of accountability there has to be recognition of what out is you want to achieve.’

‘Simply asking a question: “How am I going to change?” starts you on the road to accountability.’

    ‘Clarity is power.’

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Everything we do when we follow our gut is how we can move through our lives, whether that’s in business, relationships or just within ourselves. Listening to your gut not only allows you to move more quickly and efficiently, but it’s almost like collapsing time because there are no mistakes.
    • We’re so consumed with the physical – our body, material things around us and our activities – that we forget that we exist on other levels and dimensions of experience where there’s much more space and less of the forms. By getting quiet and putting yourself into a much more actively aware state (meditation), you can experience yourself at those levels of spaciousness and that practice saved me at 15 years old and it saved my life.
    • Abundance is recognising that you have everything you need in this moment. The block is not being able to see that because of thoughts in our head about right and wrong, good and bad and creating judgements around the situation that you’re in. When you do start to recognise that you’re OK and everything you absolutely need are being provided for you, things will start to flow towards you more to provide more abundance and you can start to add the desire for prosperity. By putting those desires out into the world you’ll start to call those things towards you too.
    • When it comes to manifestation your best bet is to do it all at once, otherwise you can spend a lot of time contemplating and getting stuck in the old traps.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I wake up at 5 and do a meditation and some journaling and take care of my hygiene. Then at 5:30 I’ll go into a 3-hour deep work block, then a HIIT workout and breakfast. From 10-12 I’ll work some more then noon-5pm I’m on the phone on coaching and sales calls.’

‘My ideal day, as a surfer is: get up before sunrise and go for a morning surf. Being in that environment really grounds you.’

‘The person who is fully aware meditates.’

‘You create a life in the moment you sit in.’

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I played tennis yesterday badly, well below my standard which really frustrated me. After the game I had a beer, which tasted nice, so I had another beer and some more and some glasses of wine. At the end of the session I get on my bike and begin listening to David Goggins and he says: “you determine your mind, not your mind”.
    • Why was it that I determined that I was going to walk up the hill away from the tennis club with my bike? The mind and body is most comfortable when it doesn’t have to work. This is my mind and body telling me not to work. I get motivated by David Goggins and I get in the bike and ride up the hill.
    • My cycle there and back was almost exactly the same time, the first was done with a mindset of getting there without straining myself, the second was done with the mindset of getting home safe.
    • The only question is: Does your greatness arise naturally, or are you forced to tap into your greatness as and when you are challenged, irrespective to the level of challenge? You mind will tell you what to do, but will you allow it? We are the drivers of our own mind.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘If I’d allowed myself to predetermine walking up the hill, I would have walked up the hill.’

‘Most speakers will tell you motivation only gets you so far, but if you’re feeling inspired and you have an absolute need, then you can achieve greatness.’

‘I’m not suggesting the my cycling home with a few drinks inside of my in the semi-darkness signifies greatness. What I mean is the greatness in my wouldn’t allow me to quit.’

‘A challenge is different for each and evey one of us is different and so is our individual greatness.’

  • Interview with Michael Arnold (Part 2)

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Michael Arnold for the second part of their conversation, where they talk much more about the processes involved in Five Element Acupuncture Treatment (FEAT) and the benefits of it that can affect everything from fertility to performance and work and inner peace.

    • Occasionally in Five Element Acupuncture, there’s a meridian that runs right up the centre of the body and when it gets blocked the person has no energy. The treatment to clear that blockage involves placing a needle on the perineum. I’ve seen amazing changes in people who’ve had this treatment; people having babies who have been trying for a long time, people whose energy has been low for a really long time – like chronic fatigue – have got better.
    • Treating unexplained infertility is something we can do because it’s all about relieving stress. Women stress that if they’ve not had a baby before they’re 35 and this puts stress on the body, including the uterus. When there are high levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, the proteins in the lining of the uterus that bind the embryo once it fertilises reduce, so you’re less likely to get implantation.
    • Lots of people live in fight or flight mode, where they’re expected to do more and more at their job while being a good friend and partner and this keeps people living in a high state of stress. Mental stress still triggers fight or flight, tensing up the muscles and your body feels like it’s under physical stress.
    • Just knowing we can trust in ourselves to do and say the right things, we don’t have to have everything planned, we don’t have to control everything in our life. You can use this at work as well, you can go into a meeting and trust that you’re going to say the right thing without pre-planning everything. It will be more genuine because it’s coming from a place of curiosity and responding the uniqueness of the situation. I love seeing people go about their lives in a different way in a level of peace that they haven’t felt before.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘I felt buzzy, fuzzy, wuzzy.’

‘The research on female fertility dropping off a cliff at age 35 is well out of date, there’s hardly any difference between fertility between 35 and 45.’

‘Acupuncture has been shown to increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, rebalance the fertility hormones, reduce stress hormones, increase endorphins and serotonin.’

‘You need to embrace allowing, not trying harder and pushing.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

While studying Neuroscience at University College London (UCL) Michael started to suffer from insomnia. A friend suggested he try acupuncture and he was blown away by the results. Within six weeks Michael had no difficulty sleeping. Not only that, but he started to feel more vibrant and happier than ever before.

To find out more he began looking into the scientific literature. For his final project at UCL MIchael designed and carried out a small placebo-controlled trial of acupuncture for pain relief.

He became convinced of its effectiveness above and beyond a mere placebo. Michael then undertook a three year accredited training at the School of Five Element Acupuncture (SOFEA).

The more he learned about acupuncture the more he was amazed by its insights into the workings of the human body and mind.

As well as diagnosis and treatment methods, he learned about patients' concerns and fears and how to put people at ease.

Michael continues to work in the field of acupuncture research. He has been involved in a large review of the evidence for acupuncture's role in the treatment of depression. This was published by the Cochrane Collaboration - a reliable source of evidence in health care.

In 2015 he opened his own acupuncture school.

  • Out of Routine

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about what happens when you fall out of routine. Gavin has been in a disciplined routine while training for his swim. But recently he’s become undisciplined, but why is that and how can he deal with it?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Because I’ve been doing things differently I’m experiencing a lot of discomfort and in some instances pain generated from historical injuries and episode which over the years I’ve managed to learn to cope with or manage. Travelling or not sleeping in good environments, late nights, early mornings, dehydration, carrying a lot of things tend to set off issue in my back.
    • If I’d planted the seeds that things were going to be different and challenging while on the road and I’d attributed that to my knowledge and experience of going on the road I think my mindset would have been much more welcoming to the challenge.
    • I feel like I’m managing it as best I can, but I know I’m mentally throwing my toys out of the pram. How many times do we take the approach of looking at things from the outside rather than blame ourselves and feel guilty?
    • Maybe I should start by getting out there and creating more joy while I’m going through this challenging time? I need to maintain my headstrong direction.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I should have known I was going to hit challenges and I should have prepared my mindset, but I didn’t.’

‘There’s a lot of frustration and anger at the moment. Why does this always happen every time I’m on the road?’

‘I’ve got a lot to prove, I’m not an athlete or even a trained amateur.’

‘Why am I making such a big deal out of this for my mindset?’

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • My grandmother was a friend and mentor to me. She was a photographer who had worked in Hollywood and photographed Marilyn Monroe and Malcolm X and went to communist Russia and China in the 1970s. She had a great attitude, chutzpah, she wasn’t held back by the idea that something couldn’t be done just because it hadn’t been done before.

    • Some patients I see want to wait to wait for their fear to subside before facing it, but facing it, recognising it and validating it is much better for you than hiding from it.

    • Practice allowing. If you have a feeling or emotion trapped in your body and you can locate it, sit with it a while and notice what it feels like then you can release it. You’ll notice the tension in your body dissipate and the emotion can change into one that feels better.

    • I was suffering from insomnia for a long time after a friend of mine committed suicide. My mother suggested I try acupuncture. After my first session I felt like something had shifted, I felt lighter and I could feel emotions and warmth from the people around me. My acupuncturist said he’d noticed that I was cut off from the world and had treated that, he suggested that I should grieve for my friend, which I hadn’t done. When I did allow it I felt a sense of peace, pushing away the emotion was causing me suffering and had caused my insomnia. Within six weeks my sleep was back to normal but the sense of peace stayed with me.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘These days people worry that they haven’t ‘made it’ if they haven’t done so before their 30s which isn’t true.’

‘The more you stretch yourself outside your comfort zone the more fulfilled you’ll be.’

‘I’d much rather risk looking stupid than give up on something I’m passionate about.’

‘Crisis is often necessary for evolution, both on a personal level or a global level. We all have immense power within.’

  • Impact Through Leadership

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about how he hasn’t felt like he’s progressing in his swimming training, but this isn’t dampening his spirit despite the amount of microplastics her could see on the shore. He took it upon himself to clean up what he could from the beach hoping that others would do the same. Gavin puts out a call to action to set up a community to clean up your local area and get in touch with him to let him know what you are doing and hopefully we can create a global community working together to reduce pollution and littering.

    • What is it that makes people not pay attention to the rubbish left on the beach? There’s probably an education problem, bad habits and more upsetting than anything, bad attitude.

    • How many people, if they woke up and found pollution in the lounge and opened their front door to see a barrage of litter and pollution. Would their awareness be different than their awareness was down on the beach yesterday? I think it would be 1000% different, because they would be aware of it.

    • It’s one thing to use plastics at a supermarket to bag your shopping, it’s another to litter it across our beautiful surroundings. What would you say if I called you up and I said “Hey, guess what I’m doing? I’m littering in my surroundings!” You’d probably ask if I was feeling alright.

    • Just because people work to clear the bins doesn’t mean that you can litter the beach. We are responsible and obliged to change the action.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘Lead by example.’

‘No one was batting an eyelid to the litter metres from the sea.’

    ‘It makes me feel angry.’

‘If we know thee is power in community then we simply must make more communities.’

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.

  • Are You On The Wrong Career Path With Jan Broders (Part 2)

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Jan Broders, a transformational coach whose personal transformation happened when he collapsed in a hotel lobby, for the second part of their conversation.

    • I really really focus on creating a heart-to-heart connection in any conversation that I’m having, whether that’s somebody from a big company or my neighbour.

    • It was beautiful to spend so much time with my family while working just as well from home during the lockdowns. We must try to take those learnings out of quarantine into normal life. The realisation of how important family life is to me became very very clear on a very personal level. On a global level it’s this aspect that everybody experienced something different during the pandemic, but it touched all of us one way or another.

    • Find your own definition of success. I feel most people see success as a good career, a fancy title or a lot of money. But if you know what success means to you it’s a lot easier to see where you need to go.

    • I’m a believer in manifestation in the form of being very clear about what you desire and what you want and clearing up your own shit in your house. Then you can create something. Nothing ever happens if you sit around watching TV and hoping for good things to happen. If I wanted to get into the corporate space I would think through all the strengths that I have that would suit me to that life, think of a very strong reason I want to do it and then share that desire with people I know who could open doors for me.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Heart is within all of us, we can all access it. Even in a conference setting!’

‘Your higher vibration is already there, but it may be hidden in some way or another.’

‘You take yourself everywhere you go, your worries will still catch up with you when you travel, travelling is not a cure.’

‘It’s mind-boggling and incredibly sad to see the increase in plastic pollution and you can’t even pick it all up anymore because it’s so tiny.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Jan Broders is an internationally sought-after coach and speaker with clients from LA to Hong Kong, from Dubai to Berlin.

After burning out at the age of only 27 (literally collapsing in the middle of the hotel lobby he was working at) Jan had to spend two months in a clinic to recover and get back on his feet. That day was the worst and best day of his life as it led him to turn around completely. Jan travelled the world for three years, became a dad, and started his own coaching practice. Today he lives in Mallorca, Spain with his wife and 2 kids.

Jan has run his exclusive coaching practice for seven years now, supporting high achievers and working with large corporations on implementing mindfulness, stress management, and resilience programs. He has coached supermodels, executives, members of parliament, doctors & psychologists.
