KEY TAKEAWAYS
I’ve gone through several, if not many, failures of what to do when doom closes in. But it’s given me wisdom and experience that I can share.
Humans tend to go inside when doom closes in, we close ourselves off to the world and we don’t want to interact with the external world because it’s a lot of pressure. We go back into our shell like a hermit crab and focus on the doom and ask why it’s come for us and imagine you deserve it. It’s not, it’s all about mindset.
I went through some very rough times with business and personal bankruptcy, issues with relationships, negative thought patterns.
Think: “OK, this is going to happen, it’s an inevitability, what is it that I want in the future for myself and my loved ones?” Sit down and write a one month plan, a three month plan, a six month plan and 12 month plan, a three year plan, a five year plan. Get focussed on the bigger picture.
BEST MOMENTS
‘I’m not saying I know all the answer, I can only talk from experience.’
‘There’s probably some people listening to this saying “Gavin’s bonkers”, and I probably would have agreed a couple of years ago.’
‘If you focus on the problem the problem gets larger.’
‘People only ever solve problems by taking action in creating a solution.’
ABOUT THE HOST
Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.
Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.
Why?
Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!
How?
Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
The irony of the moment when I collapsed was that I was wearing a suit – because that’s how I thought you had to dress to be successful – but I had to rip off my tie and open my shirt and jacket. I had to take off these things I thought made me successful to be able to breathe. That day everything changed.
After the collapse I went back to Germany and moved in with my Dad and I returned to a childlike state where I started having panic attacks. My Father took me with him and his wife to a fasting retreat and took me with them because I couldn’t be left alone. I didn’t want to go, but after a few days I noticed everyone else there was having a great time, clearly they knew something about life that I didn’t and maybe a different approach to life wasn’t that bad. This was where began meditating and mindfulness.
Some people need the breakdown, but you don’t have to have one. It’s the thing that woke me up. I wish I’d had someone giving me the right ideas like you do on this show. However, I’m glad it happened when I was 27, I was the youngest person in the burnout clinic and I realised I still have a lot more years to live better!
The great thing about coaching is that the clients are there by choice, unlike therapy where they have to do a certain number of sessions because they have to. But some people prefer to go deeper into issues than others.
BEST MOMENTS
‘It was thinking either something’s fundamentally got to change or you’re going to die. And both options felt alright at that moment which surprised me.’
‘The connection to your body can tell you so much. Your heart gives you signs all the time, you just have to notice it.’
‘I’d never thought about thoughts before. The idea that some of our thoughts are not true is shocking to some people, but the greatest liberation from the ego.’
‘We create our reality. If you’re the problem, you’re the solution.’
ABOUT THE GUEST
Jan Broders is an internationally sought-after coach and speaker with clients from LA to Hong Kong, from Dubai to Berlin.
After burning out at the age of only 27 (literally collapsing in the middle of the hotel lobby he was working at) Jan had to spend two months in a clinic to recover and get back on his feet. That day was the worst and best day of his life as it led him to turn around completely. Jan travelled the world for three years, became a dad, and started his own coaching practice. Today he lives in Mallorca, Spain with his wife and 2 kids.
Jan has run his exclusive coaching practice for seven years now, supporting high achievers and working with large corporations on implementing mindfulness, stress management, and resilience programs. He has coached supermodels, executives, members of parliament, doctors & psychologists.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
The poem is four very succinct paragraphs, and it covers quite a lot of our life experiences in such a short space.
Whatever it is you’re going through you can email or message me on any of the social media channels. Reach out. There’s a world of possibilities out there, we just need to open our minds.
One night this week I turned all my gadgets off – phones, laptop, tablet – I drew with some soft music on in the background and I slept really well, which is something I rarely do. It’s one of the top five things to do in your life is improve your sleep.
If we go through life living a riddle, we never solve that riddle which makes life quite confusing.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Don’t quit, no matter how hard the struggle or how difficult things are, ask for help, reach out and find support.’
‘What’s on the other side of that negative experience you’re going through?’
‘I believe in you.’
‘There is good, greatness and a hero in every single one of us.’

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Racking the shotgun is sending a signal out into the world and pay attention to who turned their head. Everything you do in marketing is racking the shotgun – sending an email, posting on Facebook, attending a webinar, listening to a podcast. There’s an 80/20 split: 80 don’t turn their head, 20 do. The 20% is where 80% of the value is. The more you rack the shotgun the more responsive, higher quality person you attract.
The 80/20 mindset is understanding that the world is ridiculously unequal, and it runs on inequality. It’s baked in like a law of physics. It’s not a conspiracy and injustice that 20% of the people have 80% of the money and vice versa, it’s baked into the laws of the universe. Civilisation exists to mitigate 80/20, a disproportionate amount of money WANTS to flow to a small number of people, this is how the world works. Nobody’s gonna repeal the law of 80/20. I business you gotta figure out how to harness it.
You’ll get nowhere if you spread yourself over and posting constantly on all the social media platforms. Everybody needs to get good at one form of getting traffic (human beings that are paying attention), be that in store, on Facebook, reading emails – and you need to find one way that you’re good at flipping people from casual interest to actually buying something. Google ads were how I got people through the door and emails was how I sold.
Most people can only sell to people they’ve been and you’re only gonna sell to the top 20% of them and the top 20% of them will be paying your bills. So, there’s only a small amount of people you’ve got a fighting chance of getting a significant amount of money from. More than half of my company’s revenue comes from less than 30 people and I know all these people by name and what their businesses do.
BEST MOMENTS
‘You can explain 80/20 in a minute, but spend a lifetime learning and discovering the nuances of how to apply it.’
‘You can’t help the 80% of people who can’t sell, you have to look after the 20% who can, regardless of what a mess they are personally.’
‘I dare you to name any company in the world that’s good at selling through all the different types of media platforms – or that are even good at 10. The best companies in the world might be good at two or three.’
‘The vast majority of entrepreneurs sell through a very small number of people and will dial in very precisely to what those people want.’

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about how thinking, acting, eating and sleeping like an athlete helps you to become an athlete and likewise, if you can’t afford an athlete’s coach, to think, act, eat and sleep like a coach. It’s all about positive mindset to avoid feeling down about injury or personal loss.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
In the last few weeks Gavin has suffered a muscle contraction in his back which has stopped him training for his marathon swim across the Mediterranean and his bike was stolen. But he’s realised that perhaps he should have planned for setbacks so as not to suffer from injury depression.
I believed the injury was the sole reason and cause that I would not be able to progress. That mindset has dragged me down. If you allow it to be your sole focus of your attention you will make your depression worse and your injury worse.
I played a tennis tournament recently and I found a lot of imperfections. On the day at the time, my partner and I got beat by better competitors. I get super-competitive in tournaments because I can’t accept less than being the best I can be so I always have to give more. But there was no need for me to serve so hard… my body isn’t used to it.
I distracted myself from my injury depression long enough to notice that if I did other things to keep my body improving in other places and still get fit, I wouldn’t have to succumb to injury depression.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Negative mind states cause chaos and havoc.’
‘We are gifted 50,000 new cells regenerating per second, I’ve started visualising this so I can get better and am able to continue.’
‘We can all be better, none of us are perfect.’
‘Don’t go full-throttle in the first 100 metres or you won’t make it the whole way.’

KEY TAKEAWAYS
People don’t set their goals correctly because they don’t know how they’ll look or feel after losing the random number of pounds they’ve plucked out of the air to lose. Set goals that actually mean something to you; a dress size, running a marathon and think about what change that will have on your life and how you feel about yourself, and how will that trickle down to the rest of your life; relationships, confidence at work? These will keep you disciplined, accountable and motivated.
Sit with your emotions and think about what it means, how you feel, how you want to react to it, because we’re always looking for distractions, especially stuff that brings us down and stuff that doesn’t make us feel good about ourselves. You need to find a distraction – not social media or food. Create new habits and take yourself away from the situation.
The more time you give yourself to lose weight, the more flexibility you can have in your diet. You also panic less about your weight and how you look at any other time of the year because you’ve created your eating and exercise habits.
The goal for everyone should be to eat at the time of day the suits them, eating the types of food they enjoy within a certain structure and pattern. Build up an idea of your calorie intake and how certain foods can change that, which will highlight what to cut out and what to prioritise. Once all that is in place, the changes you need to make to get back to where you want to be are minimal.
BEST MOMENTS
‘If you have a clear idea of your goal, you’ll have a better chance of going for it.’
‘Replace that glass/bottle of wine at the end of the work day (as a coping mechanism) with taking a walk.’
‘If you’re avoiding a pint by drinking spirits and diet mixers, you may still be taking in the same number of calories.’
‘Do the work early – if you’re planning to lose weight for a holiday, start building habits months in advance.’
ABOUT THE GUEST
Scott Roberts is an online gym instructor and personal trainer who specialises in fat loss who tries to give people their lives back through their eating habits and food relationships. He tries to remove the stress and confusion out of dieting, giving people a more individualised way to diet and pointing out that dieting doesn’t always have to be the miserable lifestyle choice they expect, that there are much easier, more flexible ways to diet.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
A sea mist came to test me from getting back in the water after an injury. Every statement I wanted to make became a question: Are these conditions good enough for you to swim? Will I be able to see the shore? Is it safe? Should I not train today? Am I putting myself at risk?
The water was calm and there would be no one in the sea to interrupt me, there was no sun and UV would be at a lower level than normal, so my neck won’t get burned and the mist will make me focus on everything else.
The mist of uncertainty that came for me yesterday was a real gift, because it tested me not to panic, it made me really think about my technique, how could I maximise each element of my stroke, so I get the best stroke possible, and I breathe better.
If this mist were to come to you in your every day life, if whatever setting you find yourself in, it suggests questions to as yourself. If we make empowering statements we will be in a positive state.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Although this wasn’t perfect, it was completely perfect.’
‘What’s in the water right now in proximity to me?’
‘I knew I wasn’t going to be terribly far out.’
‘Today is a great day.’

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Your starting calories are set b your original weight, fat and muscle are metabolic and use energy. When you lose that body fat you’ll potentially lose muscle as well and your energy demands come down and you’ll need to cut your calorie intake as well, or move around more.
A lot of supplements are an expensive caffeine supplement, the additional ingredients in them – especially in the amounts added – don’t offer any beneficial fat loss help.
Any exercise will help because it’s burning calories, but you need to find something you enjoy doing and is sustainable rather than doing what you feel you need to. A mixture of strength training and cardio is ideal.
People are scared of eating a particular food or group of foods, not just takeaways and junk food but fruits and vegetables because they’ve been told they contain sugars. It’s my job to reverse that way of thinking.
The 80/20 rule: 80% of your overall diet should come from whole foods – things that have grown in the ground or were walking around, animal proteins, fruit and veg. The other 20% can be whatever you want. If your calorie amounts are correct you’ll get the fat loo ss results you’re looking for, you’ll maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight range for your height and you can have some flexibility on your diet as well.
There will be times where work or family takes over, or you completely mess up. It’s all part of the learning process, as long as you learn there are no mistakes and it will help you with consistency.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Your body isn’t working against you, it’s natural adaptations to do with the process.’
‘There are quick fixes if it’s the right thing to do. It’s unlikely to work long term though.’
‘I rarely see anyone out-train a bad diet.’
‘Fad diets will work if stuck to for a few weeks, but you’re not solving the problems that are causing you to be overweight.’
‘Everything in moderation.’

KEY TAKEAWAYS
As an entrepreneur you set up businesses and they snowball. If you try to get everything perfect from the start, you’ll never start. Just get on and do it. Through the test of time I’ll get perfect.
I’m really grateful to everyone who’s reached out on social media because they’re interesting in what I do or wants to collaborate. In turn it helps me grow and get better at what I’m doing and that allows me to give you more value. The more value I give you, hopefully, the more impact it has in your lives and the more impact is has the more you will take it to heart and to influence and inspire you to become better in all aspect of your lives.
It took me a long time to make the cut from real estate and jump into the podcasting world. It’s hard for people to change and pivot, especially as you get into your 30s and 40s where you might have more responsibilities than in your teens or 20s.
Because I was one foot in real estate and one foot in podcasting, as much as I tried to formulate clarity it was still jumbled. I’m beginning to see more clearly day by day how I can perfect my craft. I hope that sharing the experience of my journey with you from one career path to another that things don’t need to be perfect or have every single brick of the path laid out in front of you, you just need to have the will to see it through and passion.
BEST MOMENTS
‘Start now, get perfect later’
‘If I wasn’t passionate about my journey, I wouldn’t continue.’
‘Clarity is power.’
‘If you’re stuck in a job you don’t like, commit to leaving it within 6 months. Start saving now and look at what you want to do next.’
