  • Don’t Be The Bottleneck Of Your Business With Laurent Notin

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Usually, all entrepreneurs know what it means to be the bottleneck in their business. In the first few years of starting a business all the decision making is tied around you. At some point that business model is not sustainable because you’ll get completely overwhelmed, you won’t delegate enough, and this is where you become a bottleneck. You and your business are stuck and not moving as fast as you’d like to.
    • The first thing I do is sit down with entrepreneurs and ask them to tell me what’s going on. I don’t usually have a lot of experience in their business areas/industries, so I ask a lot of questions. During that process I ask why they did this and that and about how they’re feeling. Once we reach there and I have a full picture I explore what it is they want to achieve and what changes they’d like to see happen? We then select the best option and the most important step in any coaching conversation is to make a plan of action.
    • There are a lot of examples of companies where, when the leadership is in difficulty, and the leaders are completely transparent about it, the staff will actually gather around the leaders and will work harder to keep the ship afloat. They may lack motivation and this is where leadership is really important, something needs to be done by the leader of the company to address the issues. They need to know that there is a captain and someone know what’s going to happen, even if that is: “I don’t know if everyone is going to keep their job, but I can guarantee that in the next three months I will do whatever it takes to ensure the maximum number of people keep their job, are you with me or not?”
    • Over my years running companies I really enjoyed the interaction that I had with staff, especially training, coaching and mentoring them. When I see the sparkle in their eyes when they understand something or they have a breakthrough, that’s a big reward for me. When I reached the age of 40 I figured if I don’t do something for myself I will never do it, so I thought about what I really like to do, what makes me me, and I became a coach for entrepreneurs because I speak their language.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Being an entrepreneur starts in your head. It’s all about mindset. When, in your head, it’s not going well you become the bottleneck.’
‘Unlike a lot of coaches who just ask questions, I ask questions but also provide guidance. I have a little bit of experience running businesses that I can use, as well as interviewing successful entrepreneurs every week on my podcast.’
‘A big problem for entrepreneurs is keeping a balance between work and private life, that’s another way they become the bottleneck; they work too much and they burn out and they can’t make decisions any more.’
‘If you don’t take care of yourself first, there is no way that you can take care of others or your business.’

  • Filling The Void

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about his move to Spain, leaving behind his friends, family and everything he knew back in the UK and how he manages to fill the void of missing those people in his life.

You can donate to Gavin’s JustGiving page for The Ocean Cleanup by clicking here: https://bit.ly/3DRZefO

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to The Ocean Cleanup, so it's the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • My good friend Dave and his five-year-old son Max came to Spain to ski. The resort is an hour away from where I live, so they came to stay with me. Now they’ve left I’m left with a little bit of an empty feeling. It’s not a bad feeling, but it is a feeling, and we really have to use our feelings as a compass. In this case, they’ve left a void and I miss them, but I love the lifestyle that I lead, that’s what the move was all about in the first place.
    • We’re really lucky with technology, you can reach out to those friends and family that aren’t near and you can still spend time with them. But of course it’s not the same as spending time with them in person.
    • If there’s a void you need to fill, don’t just acknowledge it, take action. How do you fill that void? In this case, it’s incumbent on me to find a local community or group of people that I enjoy spending time with, and I have done that. But, it would be healthy for me to find people I really resonate with and have conversations about anything: deep conversations, conversations about sweet nothings. There’s an app called MeetUp that’s global and I suggest downloading it, there’s all sorts of things on there – sport, language exchanges, mindset stuff.
    • I’m looking for deep connections. I find shallow connections unfulfilling. I wouldn’t say they’re a waste of my time, it’s a way to fill the void, but how do you create better relationships? Trying to grow the relationships you already have but perhaps aren’t as progressed as the ones where you just meet people for a night out. I think the pandemic has suffocated us in that way and the greatest effect of all of this will be on our mental health. Perhaps you feel more awkward now in social situations. You can deal with that by simply moving from a conversation you’re not enjoying to another one.

    BEST MOMENTS
‘When you have great friends that you’ve known for 20-30 years it makes it tough to live abroad.’
‘I watched the Man United game with my Dad over facetime. While he was watching the game my whole family had dinner and I felt like I was there with them, and it was a really joyous feeling.’
‘Just put yourself more out there in whatever capacity that may be.’
‘How can we create better conversations in our lives? We have to be courageous and vulnerable and willing to put ourselves out there. Just take it one little step at a time: Smile and say hello to people and slowly increase your interactions with them.’

  • Master Talk With Brenden Kumarasamy

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by founder of Master Talk, Brenden Kumarasamy, who coaches ambitious entrepreneurs to become top 1% communicators in their industry. He also has a popular YouTube channel called Master Talk with the goal of providing free access to communication tools for everyone in the world.

You can donate to Gavin’s JustGiving page for The Ocean Cleanup by clicking here: https://bit.ly/3DRZefO

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • When I was in university I used to do case competitions – professional sports for nerds – while other guys were out playing sports I was doing presentations competitively instead. That’s where I learned how to speak. I started helping some of the younger students with their presentations because there were no communications professors there and a few years later I had the idea for the YouTube channel because none of this stuff was available on the internet and that turned into the coaching practice I have today.
    • Momentum is so important because communication as a skill is very vague, unlike something like losing weight. What does being a great communicator even mean? Do you use less filler words? Do you smile more? Because that definition is very vague, we need something very small and specific that we can master over time so that we can see progress. So, I devised the random word exercise where you take a random word and create presentations out of thin air, it only takes one minutes to do and if you do it five times a day for a year you’ll have done it hundreds if not thousands of times and that is an easy trick to get started in communication, it puts you out of your comfort zone and will build your resilience as a speaker up in the shortest possible time.
    • There are three types of people listening to this podcast. The first is listening passively and they don’t remember any of the exercises. The second is a really good note taker but after the podcast is over they don’t implement the things they’ve written down. The third is a very small percentage of people who are not just writing things down but are thinking about what their action step will be, how they will implement this.
    • I don’t think it’s possible to remove the fear from presenting. There’s always a level where all of us are scared, including me. Trying to get rid of the fear of communication is a bad expectation to have because you’ll be haunted by it for the rest of your life. Communication is like a boxing match; on one side of the ring is your fear, on the other side of the ring is the message. The goal is not to remove the fear, it's that when your message and your fear meet in the middle of the ring your message wins the match. It should be so important to you that the fear is lost in the end.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s not about writing things down, the best way to speak is to speak. If you want to get better, challenge yourself. If you take that action step you’ll be much better than most people at communication.’
‘Practise your presentation like a puzzle. Start with the edges – the introduction, nothing else, 40-60 times. Do the same thing with the conclusion, make sure it’s perfect and then tackle the middle. If you practise this way, you’ll build momentum in your speech and you’ll be able to hook in an audience a lot more efficiently and effectively.’
‘After a few hours of being bombarded by 500 questions about your subject you’ll become bulletproof. Only a small percentage of questions you won’t have an answer for.’
Unlike sports, which you can practise and none of the parameters change, presentations are always different. Find one topic you can deliver a presentation on over and over again, including your movements, and master it.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

As an experienced speaker and facilitator, Brenden Kumarasamy understands that audience members need to walk away captivated, and above all, inspired to master the art of communication. It should be seen as something to look forward to rather than a burden that must be overcome.

Brenden speaks about many topics relating to communication such as presentation skills, storytelling and speech breakdowns explaining what separates the best speakers in the world from everyone else.

Brenden’s workshops focus on interactive activities between participants to practise communication in a tangible and entertaining way. By securing quick wins for his audience, he is able to quickly convince them that communication can be mastered at any level.

Brenden’s private coaching program is personalised to each individual that he coaches.  He only takes 10 clients at any given time and each client goes through a vetting process to ensure good fit and results delivered.

  • What It Means To Stay Outstanding

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • In order to manifest something you need to come from the feeling, the vibrancy, the vibration, or the frequency of the end result. For instance, if you wanted to be a millionaire, rather than have your head stuck in your hands and pulling your hair, to act, to talk, to walk as if you already are a millionaire.
    • To me, Stay Outstanding means staying at a frequency of 70% or more. If you could achieve that you could stay outstanding. As time has gone on I’ve managed to reach that and stay above 70%, I’ve then wanted to take the 70 to 100% to always play life at the highest level, to always be growing, to always get to the next level. The next levels are endless, there’s always a new level. Consciousness doesn’t just stop, it grows.
    • To create awareness you could journal or use affirmations because as you say your affirmations you will feel it resonating inside you. The first time you say a new affirmation you might feel some resistance come up and your inner dialogue says it’s a fraud. But the more and more you say it the more and more you believe it and the more and more it becomes, and so you resist less and eventually the resistance will go away.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Staying Outstanding means that whatever you’re going through you can still feel happy, still feel joy, to be content.’
‘To me, the ups and downs in life are represented by the echocardiogram.’
‘Everything starts with awareness. We need to have an awareness of where we are so we can get to the next level.’

  • The Path To Freedom With Vi Vi Thai

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Vi Vi Thai, a writer, truth seeker, healer, and fiercely determined to live a free lifestyle regardless of others opinions.

    • A truth seeker is someone who finds freedom from within, to be who they are authentically, to be their true self. There’s many different teachings, religions, philosophies, and theories about life and the universe, but what’s the real truth? For me it’s about walking my own path and following my own path in order to figure out that truth.
    • I’ve had to overcome my fear of shame, of failure and of uncertainty to embark on the van lifestyle. It felt like I had to deconstruct and reconstruct myself, it was really difficult. I also had to overcome the fear of loneliness because I often stay in remote places a lot of the time by myself in nature. This helped me become independent which was very rewarding because I can now be in relationship to other people authentically. The third challenge was figuring out all the little things in order to make my van lifestyle work and make it comfortable and feel at home with myself living in such a tiny space.
    • I left a corporate life with a background in engineering and decided not to go back to that lifestyle and do something I’m really passionate about, which was travelling. It’s not a career path, but it led me there by doing something I love and am passionate about. It doesn’t feel like work.
    • I think you feel lonely because you are dependent on other people, you want to constantly be surrounded by people because you’re uncomfortable being with yourself. You don’t know yourself, you don’t know who you are. When you learn to be comfortable with yourself and your own best friend you don’t have to be dependent on other people, you can entertain yourself. Now I love to be alone so much, it’s more of my comfort zone now than spending time with other people because when you spend time with other people you often have to compromise. You have to strike a balance.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘You can learn from other people but you don’t have to follow their footprints or their exact path to find your truth because your truth is unique to you.’
‘My lifestyle has taught me a lot about myself, not just the freedom it’s given me but all the challenges that I had gone through and the lessons I had to learn that helped me to know who I am. It’s like building muscles but for your courage by pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.’
‘Home is really within yourself, it’s not anywhere outside of you.’
‘Your heart is the compass which guides you home to yourself.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Vi Vi Thai is a writer, truth seeker, healer and fearlessly determined to live a free lifestyle regardless of others’ opinions.

She uncovered her true life’s purpose after going through a dramatic and stressful time at the end of her stay in the US. During that time, she achieved a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at Texas A & M University and a Masters of Biomedical Engineering from Cornell University. At the end of 2017, she started a new life in Canada as a new immigrant, where she embarked on a one-of-a-kind van life adventure.

Living her life purpose, Vi helps others to find their path of freedom to live their authentic selves because only then can we all be living a fulfilled life of happiness. She believes that, as we find our own inner freedom, that is when the world can be free and liberate itself to evolve to a better place in the cosmos.

  • Affirmation

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about affirmations, what they are and how they can help you remove a limited belief and take hold of a new one.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • An affirmation, more often than not, begins with “I am…”: “I am wealthy”, “I am healthy”, “I am intelligent”, “I am a good friend/partner”, “I am brave/courageous”, “I am happy to be here”, “I am alive”, “I am always learning”, “I am responsible”, “I am not in a race, there is plenty of time”.
    • Affirmations help keep you motivated, they affirm who you are and how you want to feel, they keep your mind focussed on the goal ahead and they certainly influence your subconscious mind. They change the way you think and behave, they make you feel positive, energetic and active and therefore put you in a better frame of mind.
    • There are so many different kinds of affirmations. It’s really important to tailor any affirmation to you, to the situation you’re going through. It doesn’t have to be about money solely. People that tend to yo-yo diet have some issues, if you have health you don’t have those issues.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘An affirmation could be: “I am worthy” or “I am proud of everything I have created, am creating, will create”.’
‘We are changing the neural pathways, we are downloading and removing the old programming and uploading the new programming.’

  • Above And Beyond With Anthony Frisina

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Anthony Frisina, an author, speaker, and founder of TV show Above And Beyond, to talk about his journey beginning with being born with Spina Bifida and overcoming this with a strong mindset.

    • Above And Beyond is about bringing awareness to accessibility and inclusion within my community. It garnered so much success and notoriety that I got the opportunity to publish a book under the same name and things have catapulted from there.
    • Accessibility and inclusion is so often overlooked and overshadowed, it’s often considered secondary or an afterthought in most worlds. I really wanted to bring that formidably to the forefront of the conversation because disability is the largest minority group worldwide and the only demographic with a fluctuation rate where it could happen to anyone situationally, temporarily, permanently, at birth, or what have you.
    • The challenges we face, especially in my world, are educational and attitudinal barriers to access and inclusion. I’m often reminded of the quote “If you build it they will come”, but if you don’t build it with accessibility you are eliminating approximately 15% of the population worldwide. So, when we think of accessibility and inclusion, we need to think of that at the forefront of the conversation and build with accessibility and tangibly.
    • Our biggest allies are youths because a lot of kids tend to be more curious and want to learn about disability and inclusion. They'll see my wheelchair and ask questions and I’m totally open to that. I want to be able to answer the questions because that leads to conversation, to understanding and to less ignorance. I know it’s not an overnight solution, or one for 5-10 years from now, but the fact that we need to build and maintain momentum on access and inclusion is important to the greater good of collective prosperity for everyone.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Transitioning from walking to using a wheelchair wasn’t a negative, it was an opportunity to be outspoken about gratitude and the importance of setting a path of access and inclusion.’
"We're often pushed back by a lot of ableism/discrimination on account of people not necessarily having the desire to change or amplify a community – and I say that with respect, but the results show it.’
‘We’re not there yet where inclusion is second nature, and I don’t think we’re ever going to be there to be truly honest. It’s about the progression not the perfection of it.’
‘When we include people in the world with kindness it really helps amplify what the collective can do together.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Anthony Frisina has a passion for accessibility and inclusion. He is driven by a community in Hamilton, Ontario, where he was born and still calls home today.

Born with Spina Bifida he was privileged to adopt a “person first” mentality in his early years, a mindset he currently embodies in his everyday life. “Adversity not only builds character it reveals it '' and “It’s not about the amount of times you get knocked down, but by the amount of times you get back up” are two of his favourite quotes and they inspire the man he is today.

He is a Mohawk College graduate in Enterprise Business; Office Administration Executive and when not working at Mohawk College as a Student Services Representative at The Square, he can often be seen with his wheels turning at Mohawk College. In 2014, he was inducted into an elite group as a Mohawk College Alumni of Distinction.

When not at Mohawk he can be found in his community representing the Rick Hansen Foundation or the Catholic Youth Organization in an ambassadorial role and enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

Anthony Frisina is truly a testament of character, overcoming many obstacles along the way, breaking down and breaking through barriers, so that he, along with the next generation, can enjoy an inclusive community, a community based on ability.

  • Purpose

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about a recent discussion he had with a client who had gone from corporate to consultancy. They’re still in transition, so there’s no certainty, and when you don’t have certainty the ship can tend to wobble. Purpose steadies the wobble.

    • The wobbling that’s occurring for my client is because there’s no purpose any more. Yes, they’ve achieved their dream of getting out of the corporate, they’re earning income, they’re living outside the city and closer to nature, and they get to spend more time with their kids. But, they still feel unfulfilled.
    • We all need a reason to live, to live fully, to live with intent, to live passionately. If you have no purpose it’s like a ship without a captain. How does the ship get guided to its destination? It doesn’t. Purpose gives us definition, meaning, intention. I truly believe every one of us has a purpose on this planet.
    • How do you find your purpose? Ask what gets you excited, find out what your passions are and marry it with some kind of skills you already have.
    • It’s really important to get a clear sense and definition of why you are here. It’s not a mistake that you’re here. You’re here for a reason. Those that are sleeping do not have purpose or add to the collective field – the level of consciousness created by mankind here on Earth through which we can create a great vibration throughout the planet and the universe.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘We all want to leave a legacy and our children are our best example of leaving a legacy.’
‘Purpose is a direction. It gives you a sense of meaning.’
‘You are not your body, it’s a thing that you have, it’s not your soul definition, you are more than what you have. We are mind, body and spirit.’
‘I like to think that my purpose brings me into contact with other people that need my unique skill set or offer.’
    ABOUT THE HOST

Gavin Scott is a born entrepreneur with a passion for start up and scale up. He has over 20 years real estate experience in investment and development.

Gavin says: Over the years I have discovered that mindset is everything. Now, that might sound obvious, but it is! You see the number of awoken minds are very few in reality. Whilst acknowledging mindset is key it is absolutely different from utilising, influencing, impacting and effecting great change, for yourself, your loved ones, friends, colleagues and the wider public.

    Why?

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

    How?

Through sharing my own experiences and hosting some fabulous individuals including some big household names to discuss key topics around mindset and the success formulas I hope the listener will become inspired to create space for change for betterment in their lives. I aim to inspire change by encouragement, not by force. I intend to inspire by education, not by regulation.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We are not just bodies and our medical challenges don’t just have medical solutions, we are brains in bodies doing behaviours within the context of relationships and environments. We have all of these other things that are more directly within our influence – not easy, mind you – changing mindsets, relationships and environment are not easy, but they are more possible sometimes than changing a medical condition.
    • If we really want to change ourselves and the world, we’ve got to have the honesty and the humility to acknowledge the way we actually are. That’s where real change begins, not where we want to be or how we would like to believe we are, but how we actually are. That idea is really attractive to me and how I got into social psychology.
    • It’s such a remarkable thing that humans have created a world that allows some of us to get really deep and geeky into the things that we’re really interested in and the areas that we want to contribute to. The division of labour is such a remarkable invention, and I felt really privileged to have had that opportunity. The privilege incurs a kind of responsibility to do something meaningful out of it. For me, it was this wonderful idea that we can know one another better and that there’s this great conversation that has been going for thousands of years where we are each trying to make serious contributions to it and through our conversation help improve the quality of life we experience
    • Mindset is crucial, but it’s only the gateway. People get caught up in the idea that “you can if you think you can, you’ve got to be positive”. No. Sometimes you think you can and you still get smacked down. What is important is: If you think you can’t you likely won’t. You’ve got to craft a mindset that is open enough to try, to be resilient, to be creative, you’ve got to keep trying, accept failure and learn from it and then you’ve got to try the new thing.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Right now in the U.S., over half of Americans now live with a chronic illness. In Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the rest of the world, you guys aren’t far behind.’
‘I became interested in the question: How can we live a good life when we are faced with something that is intrinsically bad that we can never get away from? In my case multiple sclerosis.’
‘The thing I fear most is in my body with me.’
‘You will never have arrived, you’re always on the journey.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Dr Kevin J Payne is a social psychologist and entrepreneur, author, podcast host, speaker, teacher, and frequent guest interview or panellist. He shares the results of his extensive research concerning how to live a quality life with chronic distress, pain, and illness. He also shares his personal exploits as a collector of experiences — even while battling Multiple Sclerosis for decades. Life is too remarkable to sit on the side-lines, even when we’ve got to get more creative about how we get in the game!

He was born and raised in the Kansas City Metro area. He can’t have too many books, is a lifelong tech geek, loves collecting new experiences, is devoted to his animals, pretty fond of his kids, and sometimes appears as a pirate.

He also never misses a chance to jump from a perfectly good aeroplane.

  • Bankruptcy

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about his dealings with bankruptcy in 2017 when his successful real estate company, which he’d grown from nothing to a £65 million turnover company, failed and how he changed his life from that moment.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I decided to work my 30s and live my 40s, work so hard that I’d have financial freedom in my 40s, so I could support a family and give them everything that we hope to give our loved ones.
    • In 2017, George Osbourne – the then British Chancellor, made a tax change to the Stamp Duty Land Tax which specifically hit the homes that were looking to sell because they were worth between £2-5 million. Before you may have paid £20,000 tax on buying that house, you were now being asked to pay £200,000. It was a rash decision that people like me paid for. A week later, we finished construction, and we were ready to sell.
    • My investors decided to call in their loans. We were overdue on project time. When a loan is called in you have to repay it. The investors took away my hard-earned share to line their pockets. The whole business collapsed, I was made personally bankrupt, I’m still on the universal black credit list, and they pocketed my money and still made their interest on the loan, still made their profit share plus profits from other projects and interest from the loan.
    • Essentially, what went wrong wasn’t really anything to do with the investors. I was so committed to the business, I was working six and a half days a week, 16 hour days. What really needed to happen was for me to bring in other investors so that this investor didn’t have the sole authority/sway, and work on the business. I was going to do this once this project was over, but as life would have it, it wasn’t meant to be. And so started my journey of self-worth.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Know who you’re getting into bed with.’
‘Thanks to the change to SDLT people decided to stay where they were instead of buying a bigger home and building extensions or using the money to put into their kids university fund – quite rightly so.’
‘I committed everything for the best part of 8-9 years into the company. It was my baby, and it was taken away from me. What was worse was the clothes from my back were also taken from me and I was left with absolutely nothing.’
‘During Covid I had this mini epiphany that if I couldn’t affect the outside world, let’s go deep inside. It was only then that I was able to begin my journey to healing from my bankruptcy.’
