    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Losing my hearing at the age of four affects the way I think about the hearing community, I was angry at them because I was bullied at a young age, and I thought that the older I got the more I would be bullied. On top of that, I developed anxiety. It was very hard to communicate with teachers, even, who had never taught a deaf child before. I really had to pull up my socks and rely on my family’s support to boost my confidence.
    • I’m a lip-reader, I have to read your lips to figure out what you’re saying. Covid made me more anxious to be around people because they were so nervous to take off their masks to talk. My boss introduced me to clear masks, which I didn’t know existed until then, so that made things a little easier for me.
    • The amount I can hear changes day-to-day depending on the weather or how tired I am. Signing and lipreading is tiring, so if you’re tired and you don’t have the energy it can be really hard. The hearing community should be mindful of that, we are really trying to hear you, so don’t make it harder than it should be.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘As I got older I found the right people to talk to, and found clips of YouTube to help me. Support is so important, without support we don’t get anywhere.’
‘I want to start my own coaching business to help people who have disabilities to overcome anxiety and self-esteem issues.’
‘Be consistent when you’re being inclusive, you don’t know who’s going to walk in the door and need your service, or who might be watching your social media platforms.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Kelina Powel was born healthy but at the age of 4 she got sick and after seeking treatment from her doctor and putting on antibiotics just a few days later she went deaf. Suddenly she became part of a community she knew nothing about.

Kellina is also a young entrepreneur who loves to help people with their personal growth and educate others about the deaf community. She recently graduated with a psychology degree and is now starting her own online coaching business while launching her book.

Like most of us I have had many ups and downs. I want to share the lessons learnt and promote a better environment for all, internally and externally!

  • Transition

In this episode of the podcast Gavin follows on from an episode about his bankruptcy to talk about living in his 40s in not quite the same way he expected to be.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • There are many different levels of transition. My first transition was my spiritual awakening – the realisation that I was meant for more and that although I’d done well in life I hadn’t been paying attention to why I was here.
    • A lot of us who have had an awakening have become more conscious, have found our purpose, and are always seeking to grow. At times you don’t grow as quick as you might like, but you’re always growing.
    • How is your love for yourself? How is your love for your loved ones? How is your loved ones’ love for you? We all need that human connection, when you’re in transition, you may feel like that’s not in your control, you might feel like you don’t love yourself the way that you should.
    • Significance: Are you part of a community? Do you give back to society? Are you recognised in your workplace? These are all steps on the road to certainty.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘When you’re in transition, there are positive and negative ways that you meet certainty. What’s your contribution to society? Is it positive or negative? What’s your growth?’
‘You are a beautiful human being, you are a wonderful spirit.’
‘Uncertainty is created by variety. In transition you’re still trying things, still looking to perfect your skills, to hone your art, to make everything a smooth process for you to flow through.’
‘Each time we have a moment of self-awareness, we increase our consciousness.’

  • Finding The Strength To Rise With Kelsey Walker

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Kelsey Walker, the author of ‘Face Everything And Rise’ and the founder of From The Green Desk, to talk about her book and her journey through the trauma of losing her daughter through a genetic disorder.

You can donate to Gavin’s JustGiving page for The Ocean Cleanup by clicking here: https://bit.ly/3DRZefO

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to The Ocean Cleanup, so it's the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I spent a lot of time in the darkness, I developed PTSD from the difficulties with the procedure, caused by the laws in place at the time. Finding the strength to rise came through a bunch of therapy, EMDR therapy, and a key moment last October when I went to the women’s march in Kansas City. I was holding a sign for my daughter, Hope, that talked about her suffering and how it was affecting my life too and that abortion saved my life. Women came up to me asking about my story, embraced me, prayed with me. That sense of community and belonging brought me healing and gave me the strength to rise and finish the book.
    • In child loss and abortion there’s something called ‘the silent scream’ where women choose not to talk about these losses. As a society and world we’ve decided that we just don’t talk about that and it causes a lot of suffering for women and families that go through this. Ideal healing is about guiding people to tell their story and to say these things out loud as well as helping family members to accept the stories as opposed to fear and shy away from it.
    • One of the laws that was in place while I was going through the abortion included asking me 6 different times if I wanted to go through the abortion process during the procedure – which lasts all day. That caused some trauma because I obviously didn’t want to be there going through it, but I knew I was the right choice to make for me and my child, there was no other option but to save my life and end her suffering.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘At the time of Hope’s death, we were struggling financially and couldn’t afford therapy for me. I make sure these services are free of cost to folks who really need them.’
‘At the heart of this work, helping other people heal and find community, is keeping Hope’s memory alive.’
‘If we spent a little less time debating if things are ethical or moral and spend a little bit more time developing the procedure, there’d be less people who got harmed from these laws that they wrap around the clinics.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Kelsey Walker is the author of the book, ‘Face Everything And Rise’, in which she describes her experience with abortion in an engaging yet heart wrenching manner.

The mission of From The Green Desk is to comfort and validate women who are suffering as a result of abortion, child, infant or pregnancy loss. Through peer-to-peer services we will eliminate the ‘silent scream’ stigma associated with these losses.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A lot of my friends’ parents are now at that stage in life where they now need care or support, or more of it than before. In other words, the tables are turning. When you look at the circle of life, as you go through the stages, the support, love, and care that was given and provided for you by your family, friends, and loved ones, you start having to give back.
    • Me staying an extra week in London was accepting that he needs a bit more care and support and can’t do the things he used to do. When I have the opportunity to help and make my Dad’s life a little bit easier I take it and take joy in it.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s difficult for my Dad not to be as sporty as he was before, and it’s difficult to watch him not be so sporty. It’s just something that we have to accept.’
‘Small offers make a big difference.’

  • A Blueprint For Stress Relief With Sharon Valenti

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Sharon Valenti, the founder of Sharon’s Dot Club, who takes Gavin through her processes to give you a live demonstration of her work before embarking on a more regular podcast conversation.

The signature course on Sharon.club is called Blueprint For Stress Release and this is part of lesson 1. Gavin has written a letter to a person who hurt him a lot in his life and has identified some of the underlying, limiting beliefs and they’re going to take one of those beliefs and one situation around mistrust and Sharon’s going to invite him to close his eyes and respond to her questions.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We hear “be in the present moment” all the time, and that’s kind of like being told to mind your own business. There are three kinds of business: Yours, mine and the divine’s. The only time we’re ever in trouble, even if it’s just in our minds, is when we’re in someone else’s business. We get busy thinking we know better than them, but how can we possibly know better than them what’s best for them?
    • The only place our life is taking place is in our mind with the stories that we’ve got going all day that we’re oblivious that we’re actually doing. Then, when somebody doesn’t live up to our expectations, we want to crucify them! It’s impossible for them to live up to our expectations. We’re setting ourselves up for disappointment time and time again.
    • Like so many people I have very violent, alcoholic parents, sexual abuse, a child that died. As I got older and I decided my life had to radically change, as I read and went through training I heard different things that clicked with me and it created an immediate shift in me. Growing up with alcoholic parents I had to learn how to be a people pleaser and keep my mother calm because she was quite violent, that’s a form of manipulation. As an adult looking back on them in my mind’s eye, I was able to see the pain and suffering in my mother’s eye in those drunken moments and, instead of hatred, I felt such compassion and I understood that she and my father were doing the best they could in that moment. We don’t have to like it or condone it, but accepting takes the stress and resistance out.
    • My goal is to help people at whatever stage they are in their life so that they enjoy a peaceful life and whatever that means to them. What they really want are peaceful thoughts. When you have peaceful thinking you’re not worried about whether you have enough money for this or that, all those fears are gone. We’ve always had enough, we just always want more, we’re addicted to more.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘If something’s bothering you about another person, you have choices: You can either ask them to change it, be OK with it, or move on. But don’t try to make them feel miserable just because you’re feeling miserable about it.’
‘The only thing we can change is ourselves.’
"We allow fear to paralyse us – when we’re in fear we’re already living the worst thing that could happen in our mind, we haven’t been through it but we’ve lived it in our mind.’
‘As you get more familiar with the process, you get to a point over time where it’s always working for you. As you let go of those old beliefs you’ll also notice some old friends fade away, in a nice way, and are replaced with more like-minded people.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Sharon Valenti: Helping people find the right course to living their best version of life is what I am committed to doing. I'm here to help you find your way out of feeling like you’re floundering, losing hope, down-in-the-dumps and any other unwanted feeling you’ve got going on.

  • Attachment

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about understanding that we have so many attachments and that, if we could release those attachments, we could open up and create a whole new set of opportunities for ourselves.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • A scholar named Ainsworth defines three main types of attachment, but later researchers found four: Secure attachment; Anxious insecure; Avoidant insecure; Disorganised insecure.
    • Secure attachment is about being available, sensitive, responsive, accepting. Anxious insecure attachment is when someone becomes more demanding or clingy, hoping that their exaggerated distress will force the partner to react. A lack of predictability eventually means the person becomes needy, angry and distrustful. Avoidant insecure attachment is when someone has trouble accepting and responding sensitively to their partner’s needs. Instead of comforting the partner they minimise their feelings, reject their demands and don’t help with difficult tasks which leads to avoidant and insecure attachment.
    • Take something that’s really important to you, that you’re really invested in, let’s say a stock. What happens now if you liquidated that stock and you weren’t attached to it? You could do anything with that liquidity now created. What about your car? We know electric cars are coming, sooner or later it’ll be electric only, are you attached to your car? Do you give it a name? Have you had a lot of experiences in it? If you were offered another car at the same price point that had some angle of benefit (a bigger windscreen, five doors instead of three) would you change to the new car, or are you attached to your old car? The possibility to take the new car only becomes available when you decide you are not attached to your car. We can pretty much apply this to anything in our lives.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘So often, partners that display avoidant insecure attachment behaviours have a past that includes unresolved trauma.’
‘The calmer you are, the easier it is to release the ego. But, the ego is so well trained that it’s difficult to release it completely.’

  • Team Building With Nicole Grinnell

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Nicole Grinnell to talk about her company, Bosun Solutions, which provides remote teams for business owners who want to build a team but don’t have the budget to employ a full team.

    • I came from a small business, I worked in my parents’ business from about 10 years old, went to corporate life and was an executive assistant, I stayed at home with my kids – I worked all the elements that make up Bosun. When I left my corporate life I noticed a gap where a business owner needs help and there’s an untapped workforce of mums, empty-nesters, women that want an alternative career path, there must be a way to blend that. That’s how Bosun was founded and we’ve been doing that for about 5 years.
    • What is a personal and professional goal for you? What would you like to see in delegating ‘x’ amount of hours of work? We build that picture for our clients to let them have the time to work out, see their wife, whatever they need. We continually check in on them to make sure it’s still going well to make sure work is being taken care of but, personally, they’re getting to where they need to be.
    • Being an entrepreneur/business owner is lonely, you’re kind of on an island making decisions in a silo. We try to schedule times that they have a space to truly stop, think about things, talk with someone about it, almost serving as a business and personal coach.
    • The most shocking reveal of delegation is that you might actually get someone who’s better than you. You might get better results with someone else doing the job.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Sometimes it’s just a matter of pausing and creating a space to think.’
‘I was shocked when I started this business to find out how many business owners didn’t know how to run a business.’
‘Bookkeepers are the number one thing people should hire, if you don’t know your numbers you have no idea where your business stands.’
‘My team is the one with boots on the ground, they’re coming to me with ideas they’re hearing from clients or contractors, I need to listen. Take your team’s feedback and allow them a space to communicate with you.’

    ABOUT THE GUEST

Nicole Grinnell comes from a long line of entrepreneurs and small business owners, she often describes her family Christmas’ as an episode of Shark Tank. For most of her career she served as an Executive Assistant in the corporate world. She excelled with her small business background and work ethic.

Taking her passion for organisation and efficiency she founded Bosun, which could provide the same level of support to business owners as a scalable and affordable solution.

  • Restriction Isn’t Deprevation

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about the perception that we have that if we restrict ourselves we are depriving ourselves and how that is simply untrue.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • I’ve stopped drinking, and the reason for that is that the reason I’ve stopped is much bigger than the reason for me to continue, so it’s been easy. When your mission is bigger than the outcomes you’re currently getting, and your mission becomes a priority, then it’s not a hard thing to do.
    • To feel better, what you’re actually looking for is the restriction of things you do not want in your life, that could be food, alcohol, the wrong kind of partner, bad energy towards money, lack of confidence in your relationships. You’re going to have to create a habit, which takes about a month.
    • You can have it all. It’s about what is in line with your goals, dreams, ambitions. That’s what you’ve really got to look at and achieve, not what’s at the heart of society’s or your family’s, but what is at the heart of your goals, dreams and ambitions. They will determine what is good for you to restrict. It could be you don’t have to restrict anything, bus suffice to say; restricting is not negative.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘Consistency is mastery.’
‘It’s really healthy to have restrictions – diets, intermittent fasting, ice baths – these have natural benefits.’
‘We've been taught that restriction is negative. Let’s not view it that way, let’s see restriction as consistency which is mastery.’

  • Shift Your Results With Justin Cunningham

In this episode of the podcast Gavin is joined by Justin Cunningham to talk hip hop and going on transformational journeys as well as his philosophy of shifting your results.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to The Ocean Cleanup, so it's the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Quite often you don’t get your flowers, and of course you don’t do things so you get flowers, but when you’ve been contributing for a long time it’s nice to be seen, witnessed, and through the keynote I delivered to the hip hop community in New Zealand, tell them about the ups and downs and the feeling that it’s not working, you don’t fit, you’re an outsider but how thought belief and self-actualisation, a lot of unreasonable things can happen.
    • So many people are trying to learn how to succeed, but they don’t check into what their belief systems are, they don’t check into their own intuition, they don’t check into their emotional frequencies and vibe with what they’re doing, they’re really processing everything through their conscious mind and trying to be right. What I’ve discovered is that the ‘right’ is irrelevant, effective is everything, and you determine what is effective.
    • Interestingly, when you talk to billionaires, they don’t talk about the mechanics of things, they don’t talk about money, they don’t talk about systems and processes, they talk about vision. That’s ultimately what they know that through the right vision impact was made. Mastering mechanics does not change the world, having a certain amount of money does not change the world, and it certainly won’t leave a legacy.
    • I’ve done a lot of radical and unreasonable things, so I know the truth about facing fear and what luck really is. Luck is not when preparation meets opportunity, luck is when passion meets opportunity. You also have to dream and give yourself permission to play because play is easy and ease is excellence and excellence means you’re going to get rewarded well. Most people don’t connect those dots, they think working hard equals success and in my experience that’s just not true.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘One of the core tenets of hip hop is about “show improvement”, it doesn’t matter where you’re from or where you’re at, don’t talk about it, be about it. I think that attitude is a beautiful thing for how most communities and societies should be based. Who cares about who or what you are, what are you contributing to?’
‘Who we think we are is just a story, are you happy with the story you’re telling about who you are, if not, let’s find a new story that has a new identity.’
‘I do drink my own Kool Aid, and the reality is that beliefs form behaviours and behaviours form outcomes.’

  • Win The Day Or Let The Day Win You

In this episode of the podcast Gavin talks about the interesting experience he had that day driving into the city to have a meal with a friend who was leaving the country and another one just arriving back in the country, and the pressure he created by imagining he was late.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • In my mind, I was running late because I had an event to go to in the evening and I had a haircut booked in. All of a sudden, I found myself under a bit of pressure. What’s important to realise is that I’m creating this pressure and when you say it like that it sounds crazy, but you don’t think of it that way. Your mind thinks that the world is unfolding in a way that is working against you, but that’s untrue.
    • I decided to swim rather than go to the gym, and I already had to cut the swim short, then the guy at the pool asked me if I had a swimming cap. I wanted to strike and show my frustration, who is he to tell me I can’t swim, I pay a membership, I’m a good member. Now I can’t swim or go to the gym and I’d been looking forward to this session and I noticed I was starting to blame him. I could have gone down a dark thought path and blame him (why not? He’s right here in front of me and is stopping me), but that’s not the truth, the truth is I’m looking for someone to blame because I don’t want to accept responsibility myself.
    • I was allowed to use the sauna and while I was in there I decided that there was nothing stopping me from doing my gym workout there. I was completely unprepared to go to the gym, even though I thought I was, but the outcome I got was down to my awareness of allowing the day to spiral and go into a bad mood or I could win the day by changing my perception. I came out of the gym feeling invigorated, I got to my haircut on time and I got to my event on time. My day could have been so different.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘It’s sad that we’re willing to let our ego win the day and blame someone for our own misgivings/shortcomings. Take the power back.’
‘I can make this a bad day. Instead, because I have a heightened sense of awareness, I was able to notice this conversation going on in my head and where it was going to lead me.’
‘Awareness is a practice. How much dedication and commitment you are willing to put to that practice will determine your results.’
