Overview:

Antimicrobial Stewardship is well established in many inpatient settings; however, outpatient programs are not as common despite high volume of inappropriate prescribing. Literature is lacking to help guide the best interventional strategies. Additionally, patient volumes are high and time to decision making is fast in the ambulatory and ED settings. Thus, strategies that are successful inpatient may not be feasible, successful, or sustainable in the outpatient setting. Finally, hospitals fund stewardship programs through pharmacy department resources or perhaps infection prevention or quality, but what about in the outpatient setting what are sources of funding?
