Dr. Mukwege has dedicated his life to caring for the survivors of rape and sexual violence in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Dr. Mukwege has operated on more than 60,000 women who have suffered unthinkable atrocities to their bodies. He has also survived several assassination attempts. Dr. Mukwege says he has a responsibility to saving these women both physically and emotionally, as well as educating men and making sure the world knows that sexual violence is still happening to women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and around the world.
