Anne Angelo was born in 1911 in Invergordon, Ross Shire (now Ross and Cromarty) Highlands, Scotland in what can only best be described as a difficult family set up. As a child she grew up in an environment of hatred, dejection, fear and other social dissent. life was hard back then in a society where children and young adults were to be seen, not heard and certainly not to be believed. Anne’s dream was to be a pharmacist, but a ruthless father blocked that opportunity by refusing her to go to Edinburgh to sit her pharmacy examines, instead opting for marrying her off. Thank goodness times have in many ways changed. As a young woman Anne’s life was fortuitously driven by events beyond her control, the war years of the second world war like for all that lived through those times were extremely tough. In 1944 Anne gave birth to Hugh who I have the privilege of talking to about the books she wrote, he recalls his mother typing the manuscript in London in 1949, just before they left for New Zealand in 1950, followed by upping sticks again to Australia in 1959 following Hugh’s father’s death. Over the years Anne worked on and off the manuscripts with the aid of a ghost writer, tragically Anne passed away in 1999, so the scripts lay untouched until lockdown in 2020, when Hugh rediscovered the files and decided to get them published in memory of his late mother Anne.

The Book

This is the first part of the story of Anne Angelo, Hugh Hyland’s late mother. It’s a soul-stirring narrative told over twenty-one chapters, sublimely written depicting a life that faced innumerable, exacting and formidable circumstances that would have tested any person’s resolve. The issues and scenarios are delicately portrayed with a real touch of realism that makes you stop and think how people in difficult and testing situations make their mark. The book touches upon cultural and social background stigmas, educational, hereditary and race differentials all against a backdrop of hatred, heartache, fear, disenchantment and dejection, much of which Anne Angelo had to endure as a child and young adult. Anne had several blissful years living in France and touring in Europe and North Africa those years though where abruptly ended by the onset of WW2. The war years and the ensuing years had a profound impact on Hugh’s late mother as she rebuilt a new life for herself, a life so very different to that of her childhood, a life on the other side of the world. What of that life! Well, I’m not going to tell you, find out by seeing what she has to say.

The Forbidden Zone 1940

This is the second book in the series, but not the subject matter of this podcast interview, maybe that opportunity will arise soon, but to give you an insight as to what you can expect from the storyline, I’ll briefly fill you in. The book is available to read.

The book describes Anne’s return to Lille in France- the ‘Phony war’ when she almost got killed driving ambulances and a romance with a dashing British Army Officer to whom she gave a sprig of white heather as a good luck memento. The romance was brief as the Germans invaded and closed the area as they prepared their invasion of England. Anne joined the French Resistance until she was betrayed to the Gestapo, she escaped home to Britain, where the dashing young Army Officer tracked her down with the sprig of white heather firmly in his grasp. This book has been given five awards; Brew Book Excellence Award, Indies Today Award, Bookfest Book Award, Pencraft Book Awards and Readers Choice Book Awards.

Anne married the dashing British Army Officer who is Hugh’s father.

The Author

Daryl Deliman is from the Golden State of California in the United States. When he and his brother Torrance were growing up in eastern ’flatland’ they often dreamt of. Spoke of, planned for someday getting wealthy enough to move up, literally and figuratively, to the hills of Palos Verdes or bordering Rolling Hills Estate. As two of five children of an LA city schoolteacher, no major improvement was forthcoming or financially possible. They would ride their bikes through Palos Verdes, enjoy the ocean views and fantasize about one day owning a house there.

At high school, this financial or class structure was reinforced when he was dating a girl from Rolling Hills High School. She justified dating him, a ‘flatlander,’ to her friends and family as his status had improved having been accepted at Annapolis. Daryl was intrigued nonetheless as to how she presented him to her circle of friends.

Daryl worked as a western regional manager for major companies in the field of scientific lab equipment, he became a multimillionaire by investing in Southern California real estate. Daryl benefited by using tax advantages for sheltering income, which gave him more seed money to acquire additional properties. In this book, Daryl offers pragmatic steps for choosing ideal properties, how to finance those properties and how to weed out good tenants, plus how to upgrade properties by including accessory dwelling units (ADUs), as well as expanding a real estate portfolio while maintaining positive cashflow.

If you’re looking to make a quick buck Daryl very clearly states, then this book isn’t for you. His strategy is about Low-risk, patience and persistence. Seed money and/ or excess income, good credit, and endorsing support staff are required.

Daryl has been in the business of real estate investing in Southern California for more than thirty years, which includes acquiring many varied properties, upgrades of every sort, two recessions, one depression, an IRS audit, a BK Chapter 11 reorganisation, various partners, evictions, and most possible real estate issues. Prudence responses are offered to the inevitable real estate downturn doesn’t sink your plan.

Many working professionals, especially those subjected to heavy burden-tax-states like California, are alarmed at the increasing tax bite on hard earned incomes and are looking for some legal relief. Daryl also believes everybody should plan for their retirement, and rental income could be a safe hedge against inflation. He believes both important goals can be achieved here.

Overall, this short concise book is a comprehensive guide drawn up by Daryl Deliman with some supporting interviews which will enable you to create a sustainable profitable real estate portfolio for now and in the future. It’s well worth a read, but as I said Rome wasn’t built in a day. Real estate investing is a long-term strategy.

The Author

Walter Stephen Geeding was born in Washington D.C.the son of an FBI agent, he would best describe himself as a renegade, runaway, adventurer, nomadic traveller, poet, Christian, prosecuting and defence attorney, and a novelist fifty years in the making. His motto in life is ‘No guts no glory,’ and when you look at his life it would be fair to say he has lived up to that motto.

In his younger days Walter led a nomadic life, crisscrossing America in all directions, what he saw, witnessed and experienced back then has had a profound impact on his life, to the extent many of those real-life experiences have infiltrated there way into his books and formed a significant footing for the main narratives within. For a man who in his youth was barely able to spell and with three failed marriages, with God’s guidance has managed to turn his life around to becoming a successful dedicated attorney both for defence and prosecution cases.  Not only did he skilfully turn around his professional life, but it can also be said he equally attuned his personal life now, married to Linda for neigh on thirty years, father to six children and grandfather to fourteen grandchildren. Life for Walter now is more blended, he has stepped away from the legal profession and now focuses on what he deems to be more fruitful and less stressful aspects of his life, family and writing. 

Walter presently lives in a cabin on Elk River in southwest Missouri a place he calls Solitaire, a place where he and Linda are at peace with their menagerie of dogs and cats, a place that keeps him sane and allows him to do what he now loves best, to write.

The Endless Times Series

The Path of Kokopelli (Book One)

The story of The Path of Kokopelli the first book in this series is creatively told across twenty expressive and fertile chapters. It was put out on Amazon in September 2021. The narrative evolves around the time travel exploits of Jack and Jim two lifetime drinking soulmates that live a carefree life just scraping by. A mis-placed cabin draws their attention, the cabin’s persona reveals its expectations beyond their wildest fantasies of simple treasure hunting for easy money to pay their bar bills. The holy grail of adventures is about to come their way, these crazy characters are about to enter a different a world, a trading world of 1822 in New Mexico, the era of Kokopelli a fertility deity, usually depicted as a humpbacked flute player venerated by some native Americans in the Southwestern United States. In Pueblo mythology Kokopelli is depicted as carrying seeds, babies and blankets in his hump and offered them to the maidens of the villages. Kokopelli keeps Jim and Jack alive when they’re in the nineteenth century time travel period, William Becknell the first American trader allowed in New Mexico then, thinks there crazy, the Hidalgos those of Spanish and Portuguese nobility love their trade goods and the local Native Americans love the crazy two. Violent Spanish culture, savage Apache’s and the untamed 1822 era of New Mexico brings untold wealth to them. What a book! Packed with adventure.

Murphy’s Diggings (Book Two)

Jack and Jim, the main protagonists from The Path of Kokopelli are back with more spills and twists wonderfully foretold over twenty chapters of breath-taking imaginary plots. The book was initially put out in September 2022 and is equally inspiring to read as the first in the series. As you would expect the storyline and the characters have moved on, but still the two despite their wealth face a new set of issues, from thieving heirs, saving the Wyoming Ranch, killings, California Gold Rush in 1848, a millionaire philanthropist, the Murphy boys, a rich Mormon, two helpless Miwok native American boys and voices from the grave, plus more, all blended in a tale of high stakes, lawlessness and potential greed. Another gripping read by Walter Stephen Geeding. 

Making Tracks (Book Three)
Shortly to be Released

Jack and company travel the time road once again. A third trip takes them back to the making of the Transcontinental Railroad. Making Tracks moves from Washington.D.C with it extravagant bribes, to ‘Hell on Wheels’ town North Platte, Nebraska until the pounding of the Golden Spike at Promontory, Utah, 1863-1869 in two months. Throw in 700 years of Migration as seen through the eyes of Dena (the people), hardy ancestors of the Apache and Pueblo, travelling from the Yukon, until vanishing in New Mexico, complete with living in Promontory Cave, Utah. Anything goes in the quest of the ‘Grand Dream,’ the biggest, most expensive, and fraudulent scheme in the history of the United States of the time. Observers, Indian scouts, migrating pilgrims, the two are right in the middle of it.

West Coast Turnabout (Book Four)

They’re at it once more, trip number four, West Coast Turnaround, finds the two in big timber country, Oregon, then on to California, three years before the gold rush of 1848-49. San Francisco is still Yerba Buena, a sleepy trade town of 130, mostly Mexican, British and Scottish traders. John Sutter is still a land baron and Sutter’s Fort thrives; gold has yet to be seen in his mill. Sutter’s Indian soldiers enslave the other tribes to work his vast holdings. The Miwok Indians are a peaceful tribe, but not for long; slavers arrive, big change also comes by sea and overland. Both try to keep their Miwok friends alive while becoming enmeshed in Miwok mystical lore and customs. They employ the Miwok as miners to find enough gold for Jack’s friend, Eddie Gindler, to keep his land. The Syndicate has made a fatal move to take the now valuable property. Partially in both Arkansas and Missouri of the future, the property has been in his family for generations; Eddie will fight for it, and his life hangs in the balance. It’s a conundrum on a grand scale, where a man can lose his principles, or life, in the blink of an eye!

The End (Book One)

Twenty chapters of stimulating narrative evolving the character Steve, a beekeeper, lawyer, survivalist, prisoner and ally of the strange underground guardians that are trying to save what’s left of earth’s shambolic humanitarian affairs following a nuclear war whose scars have left earth’s surface in a frozen state. Walter Geeding is asking you to follow the main protagonists Steve’s escapades in this first book of the series from the courtrooms of a tiny county in mid -America to the limitless reaches of inner earth. The dangers that are encountered along the way by the guardians are graphically told, so are the exploits of their opponents who are equally determined in their own pursuits to end the journey of mankind come what may.

Narrations of Nui (Book Two)

In the first book bees disappeared, starvation and deprivation take hold on earth, in this book hidden in a cave Steve on the brink of starvation discovers an ancient guardian species known as the ‘Z,’ sent by the creator to preserve all of earth’s treasures, including man. Steve’s connection to the ‘Z’ is intriguing, what role the bees he raised, and an ancient unknown ancestor play is absorbing. Into the melting pot comes Zur a traitor sister to the ‘Z’ long thought dead, but cracks in earth’s crust brought about by relentless nuclear explosions gives Zur the escape method from her imprisonment which has lasted for hundreds of thousands of years. With her escape Zur can rekindle her determination to destroy man, all that stands in her way is three hundred humans in various ‘Z’ colonies. What monstrosities Zur despite some limitations can create concerns the queen of the ‘Z’ colony, so much so she sends Steve on a mission to go back in time to meet Nui his long dead grandfather who has faced Zur before. After journeying thousands of miles underground, Steve walks into another dimension of time meeting Nui Ashel. The story starts with Nui taking Steve across vast seas to a different place and time. The planet though is starting to thaw.

A great second story to the colony series.

The Beginning (Book Three)

The story in this book is just as riveting as the other two earlier books in the series. It tells the story of continuing struggles between the remaining ‘Z’ colonies and Queen Zur’s total intent to gain supremacy over a thawing earth now that she can create colonies of powerful giants. The attack scenes are thrilling and totalling absorbing. Steve has spent ten years with Nui his distant grandfather and he has returned to the surface. Will the final conflict result in a reborn earth for the ‘Z’ colonies or will Zur bring about an era of darkness with giants and evil filtrating a new aeon.

Sharon Lynn was raised in Arizona but developed a heartfelt connection to the English countryside as a teenager while living in England. This affection for the English countryside has grown and matured with each visit she makes to the UK. The Cotswold area in particular won over her heart and that’s why the books are set there and hence the title of the series. Sharon splits her time between Flagstaff, Arizona, and her boat in San Diego where she says the changing ocean tides and foggy mornings inspire her creative juices, as the keys on the keyboard almost type the storylines themselves. If only I say.

For me one of the most fascinating facts that I’ve learnt From Sharon about Flagstaff, is that it’s a designated International Dark City, due to its streetlights being kept to a bare minimum, thus allowing the Lowell Observatory to scan the night skies above following the stars as they shimmer into life. The nights are what Sharon refers to as ‘werewolf dark’ providing her with the perfect backdrop that sets up her creative mind as she hatches the next mystery and shadowy secret to the plots that adorn her books, with only her border collie mix by her feet for company. Her supportive husband must think to himself at times, where’s Sharon taking her readers now.

The Books

Death Takes a Bath (Book One)

This is the first book in Sharon Lynn’s debut series A Cotswold Crimes Mysteries, forty glorious chapters of spine-tingling twists and turns with culprits and their motives splashed throughout the book set in the seemingly quaint old Roman Spa town (now designated a city) of Bath in the ceremonial county of Somerset in England. Maddie McGuire lands an archaeology internship at the Roman Baths there. A severed human ear placed on her doorstep kick starts the story, Maddie must get to the bottom of the significance of this ear, before she becomes the next victim or worse gets deported. Her relationship with the young constable Edward Bailey is interesting to say the least which is in stark contrast with her relationship with her aristocratic co-worker Simon Pacock whose sole purpose in the book is to subversively destroy her investigative findings. As the story unfolds Maddie encounters more danger as she discovers a body, with both ears intact. Who’s behind these macabre events and what’s their sinister intentions.  Hmm…

Death Takes a Fall (Book Two)

This follow on book is just as absorbing as the first, Maddie McGuire finds herself in a precarious position tumbling over a cliff edge while hiking The Cotswold Way. What she discovers in the ancient woodlands terrify hers, but what awaits her back at the Roman Baths is equally disturbing, a new character has appeared on the scene in the guise of aristocratic Gwendolyn De Valence who has rather taken centre stage at the Roman Baths site. Maddie’s now boy friend Constable Edward Bailey turns out to have his own ill-omened secrets from the past. All the events that are revealed in this cleverly constructed storyline cumulate in a dangerous path for Maddie, a path she might not emerge from.

I found both books engaging, gripping and masterly constructed, and for me those of you who love to follow the author Elly Griffiths and her books, well you might want to take a look at this author and make comparative opinions for yourself. Is Sharon Lynn a new author following in the footsteps of Elly Griffiths. Judge for yourselves is all I say.

A K Cooper-Elliott was born in Germany, but now resides in Yorkshire a beautiful and breath-taking county in the UK. Those that live there would arguably say that it’s the best county in the UK, but those that are not domiciled there may possibly disagree, but without a doubt the Yorkshire Dales are renowned for their natural surroundings. 

A K is married with two grown up children that have fled the nest. Due to the early onset of Multiple Sclerosis, A K had to retire at a relatively early age from her high-flying executive career in procurement and accountancy, the demands of the job and her functionality issues were becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. With the decision reluctantly taken to step away from the world of high finance, A K turned to writing, giving her a new focus in life, a focus that can be fitted around her physical abilities, for a person living with M.S. some days can be more challenging than others, on a bad day not much gets done.

As far as A K can remember she has always loved books, reading a variety of genres. From reading to writing A k’s life has evolved, she writes both children and adults books, but for the purpose of this podcast we’re going to concentrate on her children’s books; The Lilly Everlea series.’

The Author

Frank Talaber was born in Beaverlodge, Alberta, where the claim to fame is a fox with flashing eyes in the only pub. When he was a young child he moved with his family to Edmonton, Alberta. He got tired of the endless winter months there and now a young independent man he moved to Chilliwack in British Columbia Canada the place he and his wife Jenny now call home. When you look at Chilliwack on Google Earth you can see the breath-taking beauty of the area with the Canadian Rockies in the background. Yes, they get snow in Chilliwack during the winter months and on the odd occasion Frank is forced to search out the snow shovel. A trip to nearby Vancouver is always on the cards for a bit of cosmopolitan life.

Frank is a licenced automotive technician by trade and has spent most of his life tinkering around under the bonnets of cars or managing automotive shops, many  a time he’s had to tell the local customers bringing in their old rust bucket bangers hoping for some miracle cure that will sustain their motor for the next few months that they’re not worth fixing, push’em down to the scrap yard, if your lucky you might get a few dollars for metal and parts. We’ve all been there at some stage of our lives.

What drives his wife Jenny to utter despair is when he gets up in the middle of the night to hammer out some sort of prosaic induced brilliance, which in the cool light of day turns out to be some mind-blowing pile of gibberish. However, people who have read Frank Talaber’s books describe him as a natural storyteller who writes like his soul is on fire and his pencil is his voice screaming. Literature written beyond the realms of genres, whose compelling thoughts are freed from the depths of the heart and subconscious before being poured onto the page. They, go further to say that they find his books, grabbing, hilarious at times and screaming everyday life. Those nightly moments of scribbling in a notepad haven’t always been fruitless, evidenced by these amazing books he’s published.

To date he has over fifty articles/short stories, sixty blog posts, over ten interviews under his belt as well as fifteen novels written or published. 

Frank was once asked, ‘where does all this creativity come from?’ he answered, ‘It’s the Gypsy blood from my mother’s Hungarian ancestry.’

The Author

Thomas Trese grew up in Michigan, but now lives in Fort Worth in the U.S. state of Texas. His interest in to how the mind and brain functioned began in teenage years at high school. This desire to understand the inner thought process in this area intensified as he went through the various academia stages, they being attending the University of Michigan and Medical school which cumulated in a neurology residency. Shortly after that residency he up sticks with his family and headed for a sunnier setting in Texas, becoming the first neurologist of a new medical school there.

Over the years Thomas’ professional career path further developed as he entered private practice, serving as chief of staff at a main hospital and being on the national board of examiners of neurologists and psychiatrists.

It’s probably fair enough to say, that while Thomas’ professional life was flourishing his personal life for various reasons started to fray at the edges, Thomas would best describe it as a midlife crisis. But out of this testing time in his life surrounding marital issues a more modified Thomas Trese emerged as spirituality began to have a more profound affect not only on his day-to-day life, but on his whole approach to how he conducts life now as opposed to the past. Was this a Saul to Paul moment on the road to Damascus in his life?

Today Thomas is married to Dianne his third wife, who he describes as his wonderful wife, he goes on to say family life now is blended with six grandchildren and a young niece. Thomas retired some five years ago, but still has a medical license which allows him to do telemedicine monitoring of neurosurgical cases albeit remotely. And, in addition to writing fiction he has learnt to play steel guitar and become an exceptional cook in the kitchen. I’m led to believe his meatloaf causes quite a stir around the dining room table. I wonder if on his worldly travels he advocates to others around him his newfound culinary expertise. Maybe he’ll write a cookbook!

The Book

The Heroes

When you look at this book, you’ll quickly establish there are three sections, Nashville, Midland/Odessa, and Chicago. Why the name to these three sections well that’s simply Thomas Trese telling you where the plot and the actions are primarily located. Within in each section there are numerous small chapters portraying a whole host of mini events, not only foretelling the accounts what’s going on in that point of the book but revealing some very interesting characters who bring their own characteristics to the overall theme of the book.

The story in brief is awork of religious fiction, offering the real faith journeys of ordinary people like a janitor, waitress, Uber driver, pizza delivery person and a social worker. It shares a message of faith moulded on adversity, teambuilding, plus reveals how God gifts the chosen as opposed to choosing those who are already prepared. 

So, what does a restauranteur from Seattle, an oil field foreman from west Texas and a burnt-out Chicago cop have in common, not much to start with but these three characters and seven other everyday Americans all connect in Nashville. Why Nashville? Well, all these individuals have answered an inner call to action that is to route out evil in their hometowns. There actions have caught the attention of a Christian TV network that brings them to Nashville for the Faith Hero Awards. Stephanie, Cody and Danny come in to contact with a spurious TV faith healer in Nashville, human and drug traffickers in Texas, and racial hate groups in Chicago while dealing with their own personal dilemmas around anger and control issues and substance abuse. Well, get your teeth into this lot is all I say.

The book with all its two hundred pages is exceptionally well composed, the characters and the narrative blend well to tell a story that for me is an easy read. This is a book that you can grapple with before turning the night light out.

The Author

Joann Slead has a remarkable life. As a child she grew up on a farm in Kansas with a menagerie of farm animals. Riding the farm pigs thinking they were bucking broncos often got her and her brother into some rather sticky muddy situations, much to their mother’s disapproval.

After high school Joann attended Kansas State University (KSU) and following on from there she up sticks to the Golden State of California, where she obtained a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California (USC) in Los Angeles. During her time at USC, she undertook the role of Undergraduate Political Advisor and was Adjunct Faculty in both Political Science and Public Administration. It was at this time in her life that she turned to Christianity as a way of life.

Progressing on from USC, Joann took a job as a relief worker at World Vision International, a large non-profit relief and development organisation. During her time with them she criss-crossed the world undertaking various projects to enrich lives of the underprivileged and disadvantaged, what she saw and witnessed on those missions had a profound impact on the rest of her life.

In 1966 Joann set up a sole proprietorship business providing services to non-profit organisations. Her portfolio includes countless technical documents for her clients, including major contributions to several books, designs and teaching of master’s degree classes on essential aspects of relief and development programs. Over the years she has served as speaker at several other non-profit organisations and churches.

Now Joann has elected to spend more time pursuing the things she enjoys most, such as writing Children’s books, telling stories and painting, particularly water colour sketches to which she best describes herself as still ‘A Novice.’

The Book

The Secret Life of Bears

By depicting Jesus in this book as the most lovey-dovey Papa Bear ever, Jesus’ love is shown in such a way that very young children relate easily to understanding that he is there for them no matter what their circumstances are. Jesus does not differentiate between social classes, creed, gender or background. A child is a child with a soul and that’s more important to Jesus above and beyond anything else.

What Joann Slead wants to do in this book is tickle your child’s heart as they learn all the things Papa Bear does for Baby Bear. It’s a sweet, enchanting book for 2–5-year-olds to enjoy reading or looking at as a bedtime read with a parent, grandparent or caring adult. The Illustrations are bright and vivid but relatable, creatively portrayed by Mohammed Daamouche giving colourful imagery in support of Joann’s simple but effective message, that being Jesus loves you, for who you are not what you are.

Brad A. LaMar when he’s not fighting evil Withes and wizards is an educator who resides in the Indianapolis Metropolitan area in the US. Besides writing and teaching, David has created a deck building card game based around characters from his books. If you go to his website www.mamminabooks.com and click on card games, there you’ll see what I’m talking about. You can build your frontline defences with chosen warriors and sorcerers from the books and equally bring about the defeat of your opponent’s forces thus obliterating the evil powers they are capable of inflicting on others. Having chatted to David over the last two years I get the sense from the way he speaks he clearly supports Indie artists both in the writing and creative fraternity to develop and flourish. Another of his attributes is supporting those in society who come from a disadvantaged background, encouraging them to be who they are and not what those around them, what then to be. Accept people for who they are.

Death or Volentus

This is David Mammina’s latest book, in his opening blurb he states that this book would be a perfect read for fans of gothic horror, steampunk, and dark fantasy. I must confess I’ve never heard of steampunk as a genre, so when I looked it up it’s a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates retro-futuristic technology and aesthetics inspired by, but not limited to, 19th century industrial steam-powered machinery. So, there you go everyone, if steampunk is your thing well this book could be for you. The Narrative is about a fiendish figure who engages in a precarious mission to set free his nemesis from a perverted cult. Volentus is a necromancer (black magic sorcerer) whose formidable powers involve raising corpses to do his bidding and leading vast armies of the undead. Playing by his own rules and partnering up with an exceptionally talented vampire who would give no second thought to slicing off Volentus’ head if he suspected betrayal. You would think two powerful collaborators would easily control their destiny, but as in all of David Mammina’s books you must expect the unexpected.

This isn’t a particularly big book by David Mammina’s standards when it comes to writing epic plots. The ten chapters that tell the story are creatively well done interspersed with the odd symbolic images, out of the ten chapters I asked him to highlight two chapters that would show the book in its best light, he chose Chapter two ‘Three Years Lost One Golden Peril,’ and chapter five ‘All That Matters.’ Now I don’t always agree with David’s choice, but on this occasion I do. Torn Asunder

This book which was put out in February 2022 is a novella of 181 pages. David Mammina has divided the story very cleverly into three acts and those acts contain twelve chapters excluding the epilogue which he heads up ‘Goodbye Is Not The End.’ The story involves around the Knights Templar; now there are many books that have been written about the Knights Templar with varying degrees of credence to them, but what caught my attention with this book and for me distinguishes it from others is the dexterity of the characteristics David has given to the characters to bring about a tale of clashes and conflicts that create a brilliant sense of realism that the reader can easily sense. The story starts in Nicaea 1328 AD and relays the account of how the world has changed for the Knights Templar of the eastern Byzantine Empire. Their defining role is somewhat diminished to escorting pilgrims and merchants through treacherous landscapes harbouring assassins and an encroaching Ottoman army, but on this occasion who is the girl they have been asked to chaperon to safety. If you want to know you’re going to have to read the book for I’m not about to reveal that. I asked David what parts of the book he thought best reflected the story and he hinted at chapter three in act one ‘Honoured Pass,’ and chapter eight in act two ‘The Lion’s Maw.’ For me however, chapter five in act one, ’Rite of Passage,’ and ‘Terminus’ chapter ten in act two. In ‘Rites of Passage I particularly enjoyed the scene where some of the knights were enjoying a supper of chickens, legumes and bread with some Georgian wine telling each other tales of their previous adventures as they sat across from each other around the fire. The Angels of Resistance

This is a substantial book that followers of dark fantasy and epic sci-fi buffs are going to want to read. If you’ve never read one of David Mammina’s books well take a look at this monster of a creation, he has written all six hundred and fifty six pages are stuffed with fast-moving plots, dangerous villains, demons, supernatural escapades and occurrences it’s a Mad Max meets Game of Thrones scenario built around a hero who lost everything to an evil force, a force that has never been confronted before an unknown quantity. I asked David to signal out two chapters that he felt really captured the essence if the book, I know that’s a difficult question for an author to pick out certain chapters particularly when you have written a book of this magnitude and complexity, but he did. For David Part one chapter eleven, ‘The Smoking Embers’ and in part two ‘The Reckoning.’ Why those chapters you might ask, well I’ll ask him in the interview, but for me chapter fourteen in part one ‘The Siege’ and chapter six in part two ‘The Eve of War.’ In ‘The Siege,’ the tense sex scene is sensitively written but packed with emotions and the role of the dagger plays a significant part with significant complications to follow. In ‘The Eve of War,’ what is it that burns within Shina and why is she the key to the demon plague’s conquest? The storyline is gripping.
