  • NAUGHTY NONSENSE, LASCIVIOUS LIMERICKS and much more! by David Ellis

    THE AUTHOR

David Ellis was born in the Scilly Isles off the Cornish coast of the UK. Growing up on the main island of St Mary’s the largest of the isles, summers were idyllic, carefree, especially as WWII which had destroyed large areas of Europe had recently come to an end. Frolicking on the beaches and splashing in the water was a child’s haven, but all good things come to an end. Time to grow up.

David’s satirical wit which is prevalent throughout his book stems back to the quirky British sense of humour especially the Carry-on Films that dominated British comedy in the Sixties and Seventies.

David worked as an English teacher in England where he sought to encourage creative writing and an appreciation of literature, including poetry.

In his early thirties in pursuit of romance he emigrated to Australia. Alas that romance fizzled out, but he stayed in Australia. He presently lives in Perth with his partner and has a grown-up son and daughter.

David has a love for Chess, he’s well known on both the British and Australian Chess circuit, he has been West of England, Cornish, Kent and three times West Australian champion. He has competed in several Australian Open and Closed Championships with the best result equal third. David also coached up and coming young talent including a to-be British Champion.

For twenty-eight-years David has been a Chess columnist for the West Australian newspaper, and in 2001 received the Australian Chess Federation Medal for outstanding work as a chess correspondent, the year after he received the Queen’s Australian Sports Medal.

As an accomplished Pianist David has worked in collaboration with several junior choirs and has recorded two CDs with the soprano Willemina Foeken.

    THE BOOK

This book is a selection of comic verses from fifty years. Fifty years of life’s observations brilliantly captured by David in these satirical ditties, odes, some rhyming, some free verse but nonetheless hilarious.

When you open the book, David gives you a warning:

Be prepared to be amused by the odd ways of the characters here portrayed in the first section of the book devoted to Limericks.

Be prepared to feel sympathy for their mishaps and trials.

But especially be prepared to be shocked by their going-on and shenanigans- the forger, the glutton, the cheat, the drunkard, the proud, the greedy, the slothful, the unfaithful, the exhibitionist, the sex-mad, the dominatrix, the cougar, the transexual, the transvestite, the masochist, the homosexual and many, many more.

However, be prepared to enjoy the gentler humour of the later lengthier works set both in the UK and Australia which include homages to the Australian love of sport and the beach as well as a sad childhood tale.

I must confess I laughed myself silly reading some of the varied comic verses. Rosie Di Wu’s illustrations are wonderful.

    The Book

Dee’s book took just over a year to write but it’s based on twenty years of life’s scribblings as she recalls most if not all the divine message, she has received over that period in to this one amazing book. The book is mainly aimed at women and young girls empowering them to believe and understand themselves though spiritual means and ways, but for me men can also gain some spiritual insights here.

The divine messages are grouped under fifteen headings. Dee portrays this book as an attested undiluted communication between the reader and the Divine Mother’s energy. The words within are heart-warming, spiritually uplifting offering guidance to those seeking answers to questions about themselves and what is going on around them. For me this book offers a kind of alternative way of thinking of how women can face everyday issues supported by spiritual means and for men to get in touch with their feminine side and see things from a different perspective.

Molly Arbuthnott is a teacher, editor, and academic from Perthshire in Scotland. She is passionate about the promotion of children’s literature. With a solid understanding of literature and the ability to read, she believes you can take on the world.

She uses her experiences from life as inspiration for her writing. Teaming up with four fantastic illustrators has helped to breathe life into the stories. Each story is loosely based on family or friends who have been important in her life whilst also trying to tell stories in an honest and gentle way, singing praise to things we must celebrate in our world. Teaching children to look out for others, work as a team and not be afraid of doing the right thing that is important. Such lessons might then filter through and be reflected in the way we live in the magical world around us.

Each book teams up with a charity which is associated with the theme of the book in some way. Part of the profits from the book sales are then donated to the designated charities.

Possessing an affinity for the world of books, Molly often finds herself at bookshops, libraries, schools and book festivals throughout the UK, sharing interactive and engaging writing and storytelling workshops. She has also started a “My Favourite Books” podcast where she chats with young and old about individual and common book interests.

Molly is keen in ensuring young minds through smart innovation see nature in its most natural format and once they have seen that natural beauty the world has to offer, then right from a very young age they will start to understand how important it is to protect earth’s delicate balance, plus respect and appreciate it. Some of her books open this burning emotion of hers to young kids to explore and think about.

The world of academia is at the heart and soul of this young Scottish woman’s life, she has taught in Italy, Africa as well as the UK. Molly has several degrees from Prestigious universities like St Andrew’s in Scotland and Cambridge in England, she’s recently completed a M.Ed. in Children’s literature from Glasgow University.

Her award-winning books are published through Candy Jar Books publishing house, Cardiff.UK.

Like most authors that come on the show I ask them for a quirky story, simply to ingest a little light humour into the podcast. This is Molly’s story.

    Soft Play Area

I loved going to soft play areas when I was young (and still do secretly!) When I was eight, I went to a wonderful soft play area called Jungle Kids. I used the death slide there without my socks!! Halfway down my bare feet stuck to the slide. I jack-knifed and slammed face first onto the slide. I chipped my two front teeth and broke my glasses. My nanny was looking after us at the time. The managers were so horrified by the event that they let me have an endless supply of slush puppy for the day, so as we wouldn’t sue or cause any trouble, I think. I was in heaven and mixed and matched the flavours to my heart’s content and gave lots to my brother too. So, it was a sugar high girl with two front teeth stubs and broken glasses who returned home to my parents that night. I was never allowed back to Jungle Kids!

Check out our video chat here!

    List of Molly’s books:

    Stand-alone’s:

Simon The Sloth, Angus the Robin, Conrad the Spider, David the Pizzly Bear, and Athena the Cheetah.

    The Oscar Series:

Oscar the Italian Cat, Oscar the Hebridean Cat, Oscar the London Cat and Oscar the Ferry Cat.

    The Books

    Simon the Sloth:

This enchanting story of Simon the sloth is going to inspire young children across the globe to adore sloths and possibly start to see how man is putting their natural habitat the rainforests of Central and South America at risk. Molly has cleverly combined an emblem of Scottish culture, ‘the bagpipe,’ with an adorable but endangered animal, ‘the Sloth,’ to tell an adventure story that will take young kids to the Sahara Desert, the Amazonian Rainforests, to the Himalaya’s, to India and finally on to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury.  It’s amazing what a bit of amber nectar can do. What a wonderful imaginary story backed by glorious illustrations done by Maude Smith.

    Oscar the Italian Cat:

This is a quaint and endearing story about Oscar’s idea of a mini romantic trip to Venice in Italy with his girlfriend Mercy. His proposal attempts are thwarted at every turn. This whimsical story will take the kids to the majestic city of Venice one of the many jewels in Italy’s historic culture. Young Kids are going to love this simple but affective story beautifully illustrated by Agnes Treherne.

  • Heirs of Vanity Trilogy: The First Three Books of the Heirs of Vanity Series by R J Hanson

    The Author

    Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS

R J Hanson is an American Author from just outside Dallas in Texas in the U.S. where he lives with his wife Michelle on a small ranch that tends to a moderate heard of cattle as well as a menagerie of other domestic animals.

R J began his love with fantasy at the age of five. In 1978 his mother bought him a Rankin and Bass production of The Hobbit. With that initial book and years later R J expanded his readership of Tolkien to R A Salvatore, Terry Brooks, Robert E Howard and even Stephen king.

R J started his writing career at the age of 45. During his life R J has assembled numerous experiences that have given him an unequalled insight to human life giving his writing a true and genuine edge to it. R J is a certified Firearms Instructor and Linguistic Statement Analyst.

As a young boy he worked as a cowboy having been raised on a small ranch in north Texas, he’s studied medieval combat and military tactics as well as arms and armaments of various cultures and times.

The award-winning author Jon Black describes R J’s writing as visceral, breath-taking. He goes on to say that his combat scenes are creative, well thought, and realistic in a way that will please purists while remaining fast-paced enough to satisfy others.

    Quirky Story

I’m perhaps the world’s most unlikely nerd. I ride horses, raise cattle, drive a 4×4 and I’m a pen & paper RPG devotee. My gaming group plays Role master (if you don’t know it, think D&D) every weekend.

Many of the uninitiated find our conversations confusing because, when speaking of our characters, we tend to switch back and forth from 3rd person to 1st person. “So, then Roland hauls up his sword and I (I was playing the character Roland) cut the paladin’s leg off!”

Some of the best stories we tell are of events during gaming that, “really happened.”

I remember one time when a new player was starting, and the group was figuring out what equipment they wanted to buy before an adventure. Another player buys a horse, and the new girl looks at him like he’s the dumbest person she’s ever seen. “That’s crazy! How are you gonna carry a horse?”

Another time the group was approaching an island when the thunder clouds suddenly gathered around the single mountain top on the island:

    Player 1: “It’s an omen.”

Player2: (not noticing the thunder clouds): “What’s an omen?”

Players 1,3 and 4 (in spontaneous unison): “It’s a sign of things to come.”

My Kids (now 28 and 26) started gaming with us around the ages of 7 and 5 respectively. One of their favourite stories is of a time when they were attacked by orcs. My daughter tripped one of the orcs and he fell into the campfire, setting his right arm ablaze. The orc made an intellect roll and fumbled it. Thus, his reaction to being set afire was to run up and down the bank of a nearby river screaming that he was on fire, never thinking to just put his hand in the water.

    The Books

    Heirs of Vanity Trilogy.

This is the compendium of the first three books in The Heirs of Vanity Series. This series is in the realms of Epic Fantasy.

The first book in the series is Roland’s Path. (Part 1)

A creative tale about two servants of evil escaping during young Roland’s watch, Roland driven by humiliation and self-conceit takes it upon himself to track down these escapees. The escapees are a wizard of undetermined powers of sorcery and a woman of exceptional beauty with dark unimagined adeptness. The path Roland and his friend Eldryn must travel in order to track down an untested wizard and a woman of beauty and intrigue is fraught with imperilment and convolutedness. But this herculean journey must be undertaken, for in Roland’s world of Stratvs, vanity, narcissism comes at a high price, a price paid in blood both innocent as well as the guilty. Too many pietistic altars are strewn with rusting armoury.

The second book of the series is Roland’s Vows. (Part 2)

A noted warlock (sorcerer) of the Marshes bears a curse from the past for detestable exploits. Will Roland hear the wizard’s calls. Will trust or desire of the enchanter’s daughter prevail in Roland’s mind and conscience. An exotic city in a distant land is Roland and Eldryn’s next destination. Once again, the journey is steeped in peril as the lands, they travel through are ravaged with feuding armies and people deprived of hope. In the land of Lawrec will Roland’s physical and mental abilities be taken to the very edge of their sustainability. Evil worlds gloom everywhere can Roland survive fallen champions and pirates to maintain his father’s approval.

The Third book of the series is Roland’s Triumph. (Part 3)

An unrevealed badness glooms on the horizon, Daeriv’s forces have retreated but their presence still lingers in the air. Roland’s choices in how next to proceed are complex, whose advice will he heed, his fathers. What cost would he face if he disregarded his father’s wise counsel. Will the love of a good woman be enough to see him through this anxious and challenging time or will he fall at the evil hand of his adversaries. His inner nemesis is tested, but will he triumph. Or is it a case he must triumph not matter the cost to himself.

In the compendium the books are identified as parts 1-3 with their appropriate titles heading that section.

Fires that Forge: The first book of the Epic Fantasy Series Lords of Order & Chaos

Fires that Forge is the first book in the gripping Lords of Order & Chaos Epic Fantast Series, one of four series in the Bloodlines Reforged Saga. If you love thrilling mysteries, hidden enemies and fast paced action, then you’ll love R J Hanson’s sword and sorcery tales.

Murder, Betrayal, Magic. One Knight takes up his hammer to hunt a killer concealed. When dark arts and faith collide, who can he trust while hunting a predatory killer.

The story is set in the Kingdom of Lethanor, 1648. Inquisitor Dunewell stands strong in a city pocked by duplicity. A literal combatant for egalitarianism the recently appointed investigator sets to work to reveal and expose the liquidator behind the killing of a close physician soul mate. Pledging to reveal the slayer Dunewell crosses the threshold and is up against the executioner’s axe.

Instructed by the hierarchy Dunewell is under pressure to resolve the matter in hand. As he delves deeper into the circumstances the waters are muddied as the clues reveal demons and forbidden powers are at the heart of the case.  Vampire attacks are prevalent as aristocrats continue to fall, slain to their deaths. Dunewell must pursue those responsible before the city becomes beholden to destructive hysteria.

  • THIRTY-THREE YEARS: The Unfiltered Memoir of a Cop by Rob G Rothwell

    The Author

Rob Rothwell is a Canadian author living in Vancouver, where he was born and raised. He was the second youngest of five siblings. A household full of kids meant the house was always noisy and bustling with life. This was a working family, money was tight, but his parents’ always ensured food was on the table and that the five of them were brought up in a safe loving environment, but an environment of boundaries and rules that distinguished what was right and acceptable and what was not. These core principles instilled into him by his parents has resonated with Rob throughout his whole life both professionally and privately. Nonetheless, there was always room for a little adolescent mischief and teenage rowdiness growing up in the rougher side of Vancouver.

As a child Rob saw himself as a shy introvert boy lacking something of the brazen bravado his elder brothers possessed, he knew this diffident characteristic of his would have to change when he joined the Police, and it did.

Vancouver is a cosmopolitan city that is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty and when you look at the wildlife that lives around that part of Canada you must stop and think, wow what a wonderful place to live. Rob has long embraced the natural beauty around him and is often out in the wilds, cycling, skiing or sailing.

I laughed with Rob the other day as we chatted about how to put this podcast together when rob recalled as a young man, he would go to the gym to carry out arduous exercises to stay Police fit, now a days those rigorous routines have been replaced with stretching classes which he and his wife to whom he has been married to for thirty-eight attend most weeks. Oh, how time can be so cruel for most of us, yet like most of us Rob is still young at heart and that’s all that matters.

A thirty-three-year career in Vancouver Police Department which started when he was twenty exposed Rob to a mixed bag of life, he worked uniform patrol, bicycle patrol, and plain clothes crime task force. He’s been a school liaison officer, a Drug Squad detective, and a member of the Vancouver Integrated Intelligence Unit, to that we add Inspector in charge of the Internal Investigation, Criminal Intelligence and Patrol Support Section of the Vancouver Police. Towards the end of his career, he became the Superintendent overseeing the Criminal Investigation Division for Homicide, Robbery, Arson, Financial Crime and Special Investigations.

I asked Rob for a quirky story, and he sure came up trumps:

    Quirky Story

Many years ago, a friend and I were out one evening and decided to grab a bite at a café, which was featuring a new line of herbal teas. I’ve been a diehard coffee drinker, so I thought it was time to expand my ‘sipping’ horizons. I asked the server which herbal tea she would recommend to a novice, she suggested Chamomile due to its ‘delicate’ flavour profile.

She bought over a pipping hot tea pot and instructed us to let it brew for four minutes, before we began sipping. Hmm… delicate for sure, but the flavour was there. Not forward, but softly delightful.

After a while the server returned to refill our pot. She asked how we liked the tea. I delivered an insightful review of its appealing aroma and delectable intricacies, following which the server pulled the lid from the tea pot and exclaimed, ‘oh my God, I forgot to put in the tea bags!’

I think ‘no comment,’ would be a fair assessment here.

Check out our video chat about it here!

    The Book

This is an earth-shaking book that takes you behind the scenes of Rob G Rothwell’s life as a cop on the streets of Vancouver. Thirty-three years of policing told through 54 stories each with their own dedicated chapter. Some of the stories are harrowing, some are wholeheartedly profound, whereas others are simply life and death situations. Several of the individual anecdotes are written with great sensitivity, others have an unabashed rawness to them, and some have a satirical edge that will bring a smirk to your, face. All the events and stories are based on true happenings that Rob saw, witnessed and experienced, from high-speed car chases, court room dramas and shenanigans, to deadly undercover operations put in place in order to crackdown and smash the underground drug scene that was so prevalent back then on Vancouver’s downtown streets, run by a ruthless criminal gangs waging a deadly war for control of the illicit market.

Vancouver is a city that Rob has loved all his life and all the painstaking evidence-gathering to put away unsavoury villainous characters was for him at the heart of his thirty-three-year career with the Vancouver Police Department from a young, naïve lad on a bike through to Superintendent commanding the Criminal Investigation Division that oversaw homicide to special investigations. For Rob this was his personal contribution to keeping the streets of Vancouver and all those that walked on them safe, with a touch of tough guy raw humour, compassion and understanding to boot.

So, if you want to know what life as a cop on the streets of Vancouver was like – well read the book, I can’t say fairer than that.

Thank you, Rob, for giving me the opportunity to interview you about your cleverly composed book with all its rawness and humaneness.

  • The Golden Book of Life & The Plasma Soul Codes by Simone Renee Quinton

    The Author

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

    Apple PodcastsAndroidRSS

Simone Quinton is a fun-loving, down to earth Australian author who has dedicated most of her life to helping herself as well as others with their spiritual, emotional, mental and physical well-being.

Simone and her family live in Broulee near the beach on the South Coast of NSW in Australia. Her modest home is surrounded by plants. In her spare time, she enjoys camping by the beach, surfing, snowboarding, creating new adventures particularly around nature and the local wildlife.

A sunny disposition personality with a can-do attitude in life has seen Simone achieve many things including national titles in dance and fitness events. Besides writing this book that took her the best part of five years to accomplish Simone sees herself as a successful business entrepreneur presiding over several thriving businesses including a micro-brewery- Broulee Brewhouse- which was set up by her husband Rodney to whom she has been married to for twenty-five years, along with another couple. It took nine months of hard graft to get the business up and running. They have been blessed with two children Keshi-18, and Reef -16 who I had the great privilege to talk to via Zoom when Simone and myself were discussing how to formulate this podcast.

As well as having a positive outlook in life Simone admits to having a so-called sixth sense which enables her to converse easily with nature and the spirit world. Her numerous encounters with the latter have helped her to help others to reach out to their loved ones who are now on the other side. Simone’s expertise in every thing life seems to be endless, her emotional experiences and qualifications has placed her in a unique position to talk about all sorts of matters in this amazing book of hers. To give you an idea of the topics she’s approached in the book have a look at the following list, I’m only going to give you a tantalizing short version of the lengthy list: Reiki, Aboriginal and Tibetan massages, chakra balancing, galactic energy healing, past life regression and shiatsu.

Simone has always known that one day she would write a book about what matters to her most in life, at thirteen she started to meditate, and at seventeen she fell foul to the debilitating condition Myalgic Encephalomyelitis more commonly known as chronic fatigue syndrome. This condition had a profound impact on her so much so she had to reconsider her choice of following a career in physiotherapy, but as we all know sometimes in life a door closes and while that’s disappointing other doors open and for Simone new doors certainly opened, those doors were eclectic studies and healing modalities. From the age of twenty-one Simone has kept notes about herself and clients’ experiences and from these 2000 pages of notes she has been able to create this first phenomenal book of hers.

A unique and quirky story Simone told me about was when she and Rodney before kids arrived on the scene would spend months travelling in Australia’s outback and get up to all sorts of naturistic adventures surviving on what the land provided and only working at odd jobs just to pay for basics like fuel and bits of food. Kimberley was the location a remote part of Australia, the farmhouse (station) they stayed at had access to roadless tracks that took them to places that had no contact with the outside world. Rodney and herself opted to go down some of these unchartered tracks with their un-serviced battered and beat up old 4WD with tinny (boat) on the roof to pursue a fishing expedition into the croc-invested and blood sucking flies’ territory where death from the oppressive heat and wildlife is very real if you don’t follow the survival rules. Barramundi fishing comes with challenges and the first golden rule is to seek fresh drinking water. In their attempt to track down fresh water they found themselves wading waist-deep in mud to reach the clean water, however they misjudged the tidal movements and with a surge of tidal water full of deadly crocs heading their way, they just about reached the tinny, exhausted having to fight their way through sucking mud they managed and only just to scramble into the tinny with the old crocs snapping at their heels. They got their fish that day but nearly minus a few vital body appendages. Lesson learnt, judge the tides before you get in to hot water. They laugh about that experience now but didn’t at the time.

    The Book

This first book that Simone Quinton has written isn’t a cuddly bedtime read, it was never intended to be that. This is a book for those that love and engage in soul navigation systems, people who are in touch with their inner selves and are looking for a fresh approach to tap into hidden energies that can bring about renewed and vigorous vitality for a balanced, happy and remarkable life both in physical and mental formats. A book that will allow guidance to evoke the sixth sense we all often claim to possess. For me this a book that you can reach out to each week to read, digest, follow and practise each of the thirty-three plasma soul codes to help activate and enlighten your human self.

There are forty-three chapters in this book, the first eight chapters explain the basics to Simone’s theories around cosmic lingo, spiritually, meditation all driven through your inner soul which she believes works like a personal stargate where all is connected and possible. Within the soul are codes or directions to assist you to be genuine to yourself to bring about a balanced and resourceful life.

Chapters 9 – 41 inclusive covers off the 33 plasma soul codes, these self-guidance teachings are written in such a fashion that their thought-provoking contents are to me intriguing, fascinating and certainly reveal eye-opening suppositions. Each chapter revolves around one soul code. The chapters are standardised in their structure with sayings, poetic verse, purpose, message, guidance, advanced action, one on one, message in a bottle and reference sections. Despite the uniform set out within each chapter there are cleverly worked out variations to keep the reader thoroughly engaged. For me I think the best way to approach this book is to take a plasma soul code each week and follow through with the guidance and teachings in that self-counselling episode.

The last two chapters in the book, are simply an oversight for you to recapture and bring together this informative, thought-provoking process.

This is a spectacular, and imposing book which has been exquisitely written with at times a light sense of humour added to it. Well done, Simone.

Paul has lived in the Peruvian Andes and the Indian Himalayas; he has visited many countries in Central and South America, and it is fair to say that from those places the spiritual essences of some of his poems/messages originate; having seen and experienced the local cultures of those regions.

Opportunities, for Paul are to be pursued, he studied Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin, was awarded a National Defence Foreign Language Fellowship to study Tibetan, he also studied Korean at the Defence Language Institute at Monterey in California, and Russian in college.

Paul has been married now for four years to a woman he met forty years earlier, at that time their paths were on different tangents and for decades they led separate lives, but a chance encounter brought them together a few years back and neither of them have looked back.

A quirky aspect of Paul’s life if you can call it that, is the fact he has no fear of death due to an out of body experience he had when he was four-years-old. For me that’s an interesting concept.

    The Book

This is the second book in what I see as the Gibberrish’s Rhymes series, whether Paul sees them in that way or intends for them to be viewed in that fashion is open for debate. Equally open for discussion is; is this book, a book of poems, or a collection of writings with significant messages attached to them, for me you’d be justified to take either viewpoint, but Paul’s stand here is set out in the first paragraph of the introduction, so I’ll give you his version, but at the end of the day you the reader should make your own mind up about these 117, poems, sayings, or writings. But the most important thing to remember is the underlying message within each significant text.

    Paul’s Viewpoint:

‘Because this book is written in poetic rhyme does not mean the book is about poetry. On the contrary, poetry is the messenger delivering the message in a unique way. The message presented here is an assortment of ideas by which to create a new life for the reader who wishes to do so. One idea seldom considered is the vibrational frequency of particular words and visible impact they have on the body which is the unspoken source of health or illness.’

Paul’s ideology behind this book as far as I can see is to give you the reader a different aspect to life especially when it comes to making changes to our lives for the better. The rhyming couplets in the book show how lives evolve and how we can re- channel our inner energies to better ourselves bringing about a more balanced well-being persona to both ourselves and those around us.

All I say here is, open his book and make your own minds up as to how you view Paul’s writings and idealistic thinking’s.

  • A Dandelion: A Story That Touches on the Sensitive Topic of “Flowerism.” by Andrew David Everstine

    The Author

Andrew Everstine is an American author from Woodbridge, Virginia, whose love of writing has spanned more than three decades. He’s written a variety of stories both for young children and young adults on an assortment of topics some with spiritual undertones to them. Andrew has published nine books in total, the latest being the above book.

To say Andrew has led a mundane life would be a serious understatement, in fact a total miscalculation, he was blue Flame to his father’s White Flame in the Indian Guides, he played snare drum for five years reaching 8th grade, describes himself as ‘Goofy-Foot’ while skateboarding. He played the frenetic game of Lacrosse for close to four years. His tastes in music are as diverse as his life- Reggae, Gospel, Punk, Contemporary Christian, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Classical and New Age. Maybe I should have simply said he loves all types of music with a few exceptions. His first concert was Kiss in 1978. One of the most pivotal points in his life which had a lasting profound effect on him was the day in 1986 when he was struck by a car while out jogging. Andrew often recalls that day and deems himself lucky to have survived.

Andrew has a degree from Frostburg State University and since that date in 1989 has gone on to do a plethora of jobs mainly around the food services industry from Chef to Director of Food Services in elderly healthcare, to General Manager of a local Bakery/ Coffee House as well as branching out into IT service albeit the non-technical side. He was let go from being Director of Food Services in the field of Educational Services, for being as he so delicately puts it, “being too nice.”

So, as you can see my statement of describing Andrew’s life ‘as mundane’ being ‘a serious understatement,’ is on the mark. One asks the question how he ever found time to write.

I asked Andrew for a quirky story, and this is what he wrote:

    “A Fish”

We were at a restaurant in Washington D.C., celebrating my birthday. On our way out…in the parking lot, I spotted a huge fish flopping between two cars. I immediately thought to save the fish. I walked over, picked up the fish with a birthday envelope, and headed for the river.

I was surprised that the fish did not flop around once I picked him up. I made it to the edge of the dock and dropped the fish into the water. I turned around and everything went in slow motion.

I saw a huge guy walking towards me with a fishing rod. On it was a fish not even half the size. I realised what I had done. He had placed the fish between the two cars while he caught more,” dinner.”

“I am so sorry!” I said to him. He glared at me, and I quickly walked away.

Lesson learnt. Now I look back on it and laugh. I’ve even added that tale to one of my stories.

    The Book

A Dandelion was inspired by the Author’s daughter Ashli who was three at the time, she asked her father for a bedtime story, Andrew agreed but the condition was she had to come up with the title. “A Dandelion,” she replied and a ‘new cre8tive universe’ as Andrew states was commenced.

The book, which is ideally aimed at, I would say 4-7-year-olds depending on their reading ability is an endearing story about Sally Budfield an enchanting little Dandelion full of hope and determination. A flower party has been organised for all the flowers and a list of all those who would be invited would be posted at the Town Hall. Only those flowers on the list could attend the grand party, but at the bottom of the list was a note, ‘NO DANDELIONS ALLOWED.’ Sally ingeniously comes up with a cunning plan to get herself into the party albeit through the backdoor- with a little coloured powder and a touch of inventiveness- she’s in. But the party doesn’t go to plan and those flowers that saw themselves as far superior to a humble dandelion weed soon rely on Sally and other mere dandelions, to get them out of a predicament. While Sally is in doubtful disguise the flowers accept her, but once her cover is blown, she’s soon frowned upon despite her valiant efforts to save them all. The storyline is simply a story to very young kids teaching them basically to respect all, despite their ethnic backgrounds.

The illustrations are bright, bold and vivacious as you would expect in a children’s book for this age range.

It’s an enchanting book exquisitely compiled, and kids are going to love it. The book is dedicated to Ashli.C. Everstine, M.D. Andrew acknowledge his wife Woyeni for her enduring support and the work his daughter Julia Gonsalves did around editing.” Cheers Dears!”

    The Author

Dr Marnix Wells is a British Author living in Croydon a large town in South London in the UK. His fascination with ancient Chinese History, art, culture and religion goes right back to his childhood days influenced by a book his mother read. He obtained his first degree in Chinese from Oxford University in 1967 and later acquired a PhD in Oriental and African studies from London University in 2001. Dr Marnix is also responsible for writing’ The Pheasant Cap Master and the End of History: Linking religion and philosophy in Early China.

I asked Dr Marnix for a quirky story about himself, and this is what he said.” A boy of pugnacious disposition, his mother by reading aloud, sparked interest in history, and his father, through rabbit-skinning and shooting, in nature. At boarding school, he won prizes for butterfly, wild-moth and wildflower collections from a Suffolk landscape now sadly depleted. In holidays, archaeology inspired him to help the county museum, washing excavated potsherds and joining a week’s dig on a turret of Hadrian’s wall. His mother’s teenage copy of The Importance of Living by Lin Yutang fuelled a growing fascination with Chinese art, leading to a first degree from Oxford University, a career in Far Eastern container shipping and a PhD from London School of Oriental and African Studies.”

This amazing book which is written for lovers of world history and religion has been dedicated to the author’s late Parents Edward Preston ‘Hawkeye Bill’ and Mary Dorothea: daughter Sarah, helper and beloved soul-mate Joyce, honorary proof-readers Angus Macindoe and Lilian Chia, my teachers at Oxford University’s Oriental Institute , 1964-1967: Professor David Hawkes, lecturers Raymond Dawson, Glen Dudbridge, then PhD candidate Wong Siu-Kit, and at London University School of Oriental and African Studies, 1993-2001 my PhD supervisor Paul Thompson.

Dr Marnix also acknowledges a debt of gratitude to all pioneers of Heguanzi studies, in particular professors Angus.C. Graham (1919-1991), Huang Huaixin in China, Carine Defoort in Belgium and Jean Levi in France. Last buy not least, to my IT guru Sikander Qasemi.

    The Book

    Prologue

This is the tale of a nation, Zhao (Shanxi), on the eve of destruction. It reflects the last stand of one of six independent kingdoms against imperial Qin, with a novel vision of an egalitarian world order. Yet we also see here the emergent blueprint of a centralised bureaucracy under the messianic ruler, shortly to be implemented by Qin in the draconian person of its ‘First Augustan Emperor,’ Qin Shihuangdi.

Like Rome’s Emperor Augustus and China’s subsequent emperors, be adopted celestial status as if an astral incarnation. This work, which fuses ideas of Lao Zi’s ‘Way’ with ‘Law’ Dao with Fa, is ascribed to Heguan Zi the’ Pheasant Cap Master,’ the enigmatic figure who features in its dialogues. Its antiquity has been authenticated by parallels with “Yellow Emperor’ scrolls only recently recovered from a 168 BC tomb of the early Han dynasty.

Uniquely the work speaks frankly of contemporary events together with the prophecies of a messiah-like figure, an ‘Augustan’ who will unite the world. A double ninefold schema, with a messianic revelation of nine Augustans and Grand Unity, centered on three core chapters (ix-xi), encapsulates the book’s plan.

The First half, (i-ix) outlines hope for a new order in the face of defeat by Qin with revelation of a divine plan’ followed in (x), by an inter gods dialogue between Grand Unity and Grand Augustan; ending in the second half, (xii-xix), with ideas on armed struggle and tactics to save the day.

    ———————————

A simpler version of what this book reveals is a mysterious person eminent by a pheasant feather in a cap emerges on the Chinese scene two millennia ago with expressive imaginations of a futuristic world of peace and fair-mindedness. Like Laozi, Hequanzi (Pheasant Cap) understood the fundamental unity in naturistic things and the influence of Dao to adapt issues.

The threat of a triumph by the state of Qin, he searched for a messiah like personage, the ninth Augustan, to initiate a new age based on the authority of the god Grand Unity.

What this masterpiece book also reveals is early Daoism and its ideology superbly written and ingeniously laid out. The photographic pictures headed up as plates 1-24 are simply breath taking and give a unique photogenic aspect to the work of this book.

Kiki Fuerte is an author based in London, but she was born and raised in Guadeloupe, a place she calls her paradise and of course the TV program ‘Death in Paradise,’ is filmed. Kiki studied English and American literature at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University in Paris where she completed her master’s degree. She also went on to study modern languages at Oxford University where she graduated as a modern language teacher of French and Spanish. Life is certainly busy for Kiki, wife, mother, high school teacher, senior leader and writing are at the core of this hectic lifestyle.

Language comes easy to Kiki something that stems right back to her native French and Creole roots. Like her native tongue Kiki’s passion for everything books go back to her childhood in the Caribbean to the present day. For Kiki writing about romance and love is what she does best, but her romance novels have got to bound up with suspense, adventure and sinister twists.

I asked Kiki dose she have any quirky skits to relate to us, an unforgettable memorial event so to speak, all I can say is don’t mention bulls and mad cows. The story goes back to when she was twelve in Guadeloupe when she was sent by her grandmother to visit her great aunt Martha in the countryside. An afternoon’s venture of scrumping not for apples but quenettes (type of cherry) with her cousin Joseph was in order, however the local black bull and his herd of cows had other ideas about two wayward kids cavorting around the hedges of their fields in search of quenettes and duly dispatched them sending them hither and thither up trees and into bushes. Hasten to add not many quenettes were picked for great aunt Martha’s supposed fruit pie that day. Since that day Kiki like myself is very wary of crossing a field of cows with a horned black bull in.

I wonder what Kiki’s children Severine and Sébastien make of their mother’s scrumping escapade?

    The Books

Book One- Never Saw You Coming

Beatrice struggles with her relationship with Edward. What started like a perfect love story turned out to be a living nightmare, where none of the protagonists anticipated the river of tragedies they were swept into.

Originating from Martinique, in the French Caribbean, Beatrice was this well-balanced teacher with overwhelming optimism and naivety, making her a very likeable young woman. She moved from her Martinique upbringing to study in France, at the Sorbonne in Paris, which led her to train in Cambridge to become a teacher. Beatrice was full of hope and dreams when she started teaching teenagers in Surrey. She loved her new job. Love came knocking at her door in the shape of Edward, another teacher. He charmed her with his vibrant intellect and energy. They fell in love.

Edward courted her slowly but smoothly, answering her deepest romantic dreams. Once living under the same roof, Edward’s true colours showed to be very dark and Beatrice became caught between her love for this man who could be so perfect, and her fear of this man who could be so hideous.

Edward seemingly manipulated Beatrice, making it impossible for her to truly rebel and leave him. She never saw him coming with all his talented and deceiving eloquence. When challenged or questioned, he repeatedly lost his temper and verbally abused her, but also showed the most forgiving nature filled with remorse.

Their life together floated from love and tenderness to hatred and aggression. A life of self-destruction, with hidden bursts of romance, such was Edward and Beatrice’s life. Entangled in a myriad of shocks and never-ending incidents.

From the first touch with evil when Beatrice discovered the affair that Edward had with his 17-year-old student, to the reconciliation attempts, the suicide attempt, the forgiveness and the lost illusions, they fell into a spiral of traumatic events which led them both being arrested and locked into police cells.

Book Two- Now, Live with That

This book is just as tantalising as the first and again Kiki has managed yet again to infuse palpable tension into the storylines right from the police cell to the scene at St Pancras’ station, the twists and the turns are beautifully and skilfully threaded together. The tempestuous positions of Beatrice and Edward spirals out of control. The emotions and fervour are rampant so are the hatred and vitriolic feelings each has for the other as Edward’s twisted version of love strangles the life out of their fragile and explosive relationship continues. Into this cauldron of fire steps Lawrence whose aspirations of love towards Beatrice only muddies the waters of envy within Edward, now a convicted paedophile. Edward’s depraved, unhealthy, illogical thinking leads to dire consequences for all caught up in this web of passion, mental as well as physical violence and outright deceit. But yet a stunning story nevertheless just like the first book.
