  • E63: Inspiration to redefine travel and make it part of your everyday lifestyle and budget with Lindsey Ranzau

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Lindsey Ranzau, aka "Look about Lindsey" on social media.

Lindsey Ranzau is a Minnesota-based travel writer who spends her free time exploring the hidden gems of Minnesota and beyond with her husband, Cole. Her mission is to change the definition of travel from long, expensive, far-away trips to more attainable getaways that can be part of your everyday lifestyle and budget.

She shares her journey and how she started exploring travel and blogging and sharing it with the world. We talk about travel and adventure and how it allows you to get exposed to different ways of life, yet at the end of the day we realize that people are way more similar than different. She shares her favorite spots in MN/Midwest and around the world. Lindsey talk about her tips to finding those local hidden gems in any town she visits including restaurants, hikes, activities, bed and breakfasts and more.

The insights and motivation that she shares go beyond travel and can be applied to everyday life. She offers a lot of profound advice including how we shouldn't apologize for putting ourselves first, no different than how we're told on airlines to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping others.

For those of you who live in colder climates, Lindsey will inspire you to get outside in the cold and snow and enjoy all that nature has to offer. Check out her blog post about activities to do in MN this winter.

  • E62: Explore how food and cooking have the power to transform individual, community and environmental health with professional chef Jenny Breen

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Jenny Breen.

Jenny has been a professional chef and advocate for local and sustainably raised foods, working directly with farmers and producers in the Twin Cities area, since the mid 1980's.

She was co-owner of Good Life Cafe and Catering, a sustainable and whole foods business from 1996-2013. She is a 2009 Archibald Bush Foundation Leadership Fellow and completed her MPH in Nutrition at the University of Minnesota in 2011 while working to build networks within health and food systems to create greater access to food, support for sustainable farming, and to utilize cooking as a health strategy.

Her first cookbook "Cooking up the Good Life" was released in April of 2011 from the University of Minnesota Press. She currently teaches three courses at the University of Minnesota through the Bakken center for Spirituality and Healing, and the college of Food and Agriculture. She contracts as a food and nutrition public health educator and delivers culinary nutrition training to local health departments, school districts, non profit food and farming organizations and regular community folks.

We had a fantastic conversation with Jenny about how food is medicine and how it is directly connected to personal health, community health and environmental health. We discussed how we need to be informed consumers of food and that our choices should be intentional. We also talk about how cooking is a delicious and potentially joyful way to engage with the food system at many levels. Jenny peppers the conversation with lots of wonderful tips including: coming up with three basic sauces and batch cooking (grain, sauce and legume each week), cooking smarter and not harder, building your freezer and your pantry with stocked items, and engaging your kids in the process.

Additionally, we discussed how to empower people to understand how to take care of themselves through food and to trust their own intuition/knowledge/experience. You will not want to miss this powerful and important conversation.

  • Bonus Episode: A mind, body and spirit approach to navigating mental health and anxiety in teens with psychotherapist and mother daughter duo Kirsten & Sophie Rewey.

We are thrilled to have Psychotherapist Kirsten Rewey back on our show today. Kirsten is passionate about working with adults who struggle with relationship concerns, anxiety or depression, and she also enjoys assisting teens and families in crisis. In today's episode, she's joined by her 19 year old daughter Sophie, to talk about the very important topic of mental health for teens and young adults that many of our listeners have been asking for during this pandemic.

Kirsten Rewey is a Psychotherapist who works with a diverse clientele. She has provided mental health services within family programs through Hennepin County, as well as in K-12 educational settings. She is experienced in play and art therapy for children and uses a range of narrative, cognitive behavioral and mindfulness approaches. She offers a collaborative, welcoming therapeutic environment in which clients feel safe to tell their story. Kirsten graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Social Work, and has more than 15 years of professional experience. A mother of three, she understands the multitude of challenges facing working moms and is passionate about helping her clients get to the next level.

Sophie is a Sophomore at UW-Madison majoring in Biology, with minors in studio art and french. She researches in the neurology department as a lab assistant and will work as an EMT this summer. On campus, she is involved with greek life and the Wisconsin Alumni Student Board.

We first had Kirsten on our show right after the pandemic hit as a bonus episode in late March of 2020 where we talked about mental health and specifically anxiety, which is on the rise across the globe given our current world health crisis. Kirsten shared her insight, her "101 Therapy Tools" and helpful advice that all of us can use to bring more calm into our life; not just in today's current environment but for a lifetime. So if you haven't already listened to our first conversation with Kirsten that aired in late March as a bonus episode, we highly encourage you to do so

In today's conversation with this mother daughter duo, we go into the mind of a college student, the anxiety, struggles and challenges she faces, and her insight and tips that work for her and her peers, especially during this pandemic when we are all more isolated from people. Sophie shares what she and her friends do to help each other out and boost each others' moods. Kirsten shares some of the challenges that she's seeing in her practice with her teenage/young adult clients and her simple (but not always easy) tips that can boost your mood and improve your mental clarity, like walking with a friend and getting outside every day.

Sophie and Kirsten both talk about their relationship and how their open communication has been paramount for them to develop and maintain a strong bond throughout her teenage years.

Some of Kirsten's parenting tips include: spending quality time with our kids, admitting when you need to do a "do over" and leaving your ego at the door, as well as becoming vulnerable and sharing your generational story as parents.

This is one conversation that is a must for all parents and teens, which touches on finding balance with our mind, body and spirit. Regardless of the age of your kids right now, the wisdom and insight that is shared in this episode is extremely useful for parents of younger kids as well as teens and young adults.

  • E60: The Anticancer Lifestyle Program with breast cancer survivor and co-Founder Meg Hirshberg

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Meg Cadoux Hirshberg, breast cancer survivor and the co-founder of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program, an online lifestyle transformation course for cancer survivors and those interested in disease prevention. For most of her career, Meg was a freelance writer for magazines, and for six years wrote a column for Inc. magazine about the intersection of family and business. Her award-winning book, For Better or For Work: A Survival Guide for Entrepreneurs and Their Families, was cited by Entrepreneur magazine as one of the year's best business books of 2012.

After three cancer diagnoses and two recoveries within 19 years, Megan Cadoux Hirshberg is all too familiar with hearing people equate cancer with war. As founder of the Anticancer Lifestyle Program, Meg teaches others to stop thinking of chronic illness as a winning or losing battle, but rather another component in the body's complex ecosystem.

The Anticancer Lifestyle Program is a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum that promotes transformation to improve the body's natural defenses against disease. Through the online course, Meg and experts from top medical facilities touch on simple changes that promote a healthier lifestyle, including reframing how we speak about chronic illness.

We had such an inspirational conversation with Meg and we were in awe of her ability to take her cancer diagnosis and turn it into such an amazing platform to help so many others. If you know anyone dealing with a cancer diagnosis, send them over to The Anticancer Lifestyle Program. We also loved hearing about the way Meg teaches others to reframe chronic illness as a component of the body's complex eco-system and think about more peaceful ways to talk about cancer. You will not want to miss this motivating conversation!

  • E59: Exploring the amazing health & wellness benefits of whole leaf tea with cancer survivor, author and founder/CEO of the Tea Spot, Maria Uspenski

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Maria Uspenski, the founder and CEO of The Tea Spot, where her mission is to advance healthier living through the everyday enjoyment of whole leaf tea. The Tea Spot's vision to modernize the loose leaf tea experience has held steadfast since the for-profit philanthropic company was founded in 2004. Maria, a cancer survivor was drawn to the health benefits of leaf tea during her recovery. Her message is simple and powerful: Tea in its freshest form renders premium flavor, unmatched health benefits, and is eco-friendly.

Maria is also the author of "Cancer Hates Tea", which is a beautiful and very informative and inspirational book that was published in 2016. She was recognized as the "Top Tea Health Advocate" at the 2017 World Tea Expo and is often featured at conferences nationwide, in print media, on television, and on radio and podcast interviews for her success as a social entrepreneur and certified tea and fitness nutrition expert.

The Tea Spot, Inc.TM is a leading producer of handcrafted whole leaf teas and creator of Steepware®—the housewares tools that make your daily tea practice easy and fun. The company's mission to empower healthy living through tea fuels their 10% Pledge to cancer & community wellness. We love that this Boulder, CO company is also a certified B Corp, which provides the assurance that their Wellness pledge aligns with its goals.

The Tea Spot's premium, award-winning loose tea blends are micro-blended in small batches. The company's inspiring hot and cold brew teas rise up to meet the challenges of modern life.

Whether it's a kick to get you going in the morning or just a small escape from the stresses of the day, at The Tea Spot there's a handcrafted tea that's perfect for every moment. With full-leaf teas, botanicals and functional teas, the company has evolved age-old traditions to allow exquisite flavor and good health to collide in every cup.

We had a wonderful conversation with Maria and could have talked with her for hours. Even as avid tea drinks we learned so much about the health benefits of tea, including the different types of tea and why the quality of your tea really makes a difference. We both are huge fans of The Tea Spot, drinking their delicious teas daily and using their trademarked steepware, which really does make drinking looseleaf easy and accessible even when you're on the go. Maria shares the benefits of drinking a variety of different teas and her tips to start a tea habit.

We think drinking high quality and loose leaf tea throughout the day to stay hydrated is a wonderful habit to introduce as we kick off the New Year as we are even more focused on our health and immunity.

  • E57: A personal story of sobriety: Natalie Halt's journey from professional water skier, to sommelier and currently a medicinal mixologist

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Natalie Halt, who shares her very personal journey from being a professional water skier in her 20's to becoming a sommelier, and most recently hitting her "rock bottom" and then finding a new passion in the world of zero proof drinks.

With roots in the culinary meccas of both New Orleans and Charleston, South Carolina, Natalie's love of all things food and beverage began early and has shaped her journey through present day. At 16 she moved to Florida to pursue an education and a career as a professional athlete. Meeting her husband, Frederic, at university meant a move to Geneva, Switzerland by the time she was 25. It was at this point that her deep love of wine began to grow. Sports always kept consumption under wraps, until the off-season, of course. In the heart of some of Europe's most incredible Old World wine regions, Natalie began expanding her palate with Austrian Rieslings, Burgudian Pinots, Bordelais Bordeaux and Austrian Gewurtz.

After the birth of her two sons abroad, Natalie returned to the States to infuse a little American into her Swiss babies. Charleston was where she resettled and for six years Natalie grew a yoga business supporting local yoga teachers. In 2018, Denver, Colorado beckoned and Natalie found herself nestled at the foot of the Rockies delving into natural wine. This led to a two year experience with direct wine sales, and her education to become a certified sommelier.

Natalie created a sellout wine course called Wine Speak in 2020, where she virtually trained novice and experienced wine lovers to more deeply appreciate and "speak" to the wine.

On June 27th, Natalie had her gift of 'rock bottom' and it has been a journey of recovery ever since. With incredible support from her husband and two sons, Natalie survived the mommy wine culture. As of the date this episode airs Natalie will be just 4 days away from her 6 month sobriety milestone. Today, she is expanding her wings into the world of zero-proof everything with sober bars and herbalism school on the horizon.

Natalie is really excited about Awake , Denver's first sober bar, which will provide an alcohol free sanctuary for this local community in the spring of 2021.

Special Offer: Natalie is offering our listeners a free offer to have her curate a non-alcoholic beverage just for you! Simple DM Natalie directly at @MedicinalMixologist or @Natalie_Halt .
