  • E42: Learn to have more energy & be more present in your life by creating simple structures and rituals in your space with professional organizer Elsa Elbert

Today's guest is Elsa Elbert, Professional Organizer and Founder of Composed Living.

Elsa Elbert is the Founder of Composed Living, a Los Angeles-based professional organizing company focused on transforming homes from the chaos of clutter to the simplicity of a beautifully organized space. She believes that putting sustainable, easy-to-maintain solutions in place not only saves you time and money, but also allows you to focus your energy on the things - and people - you love. With over twenty years of experience, along with a Masters degree in Organizational Leadership, Elsa has supported countless families on their journey to discovering the many benefits of living a clutter-free, organized life. Her work has been featured on HGTV, Thrive Global, BuzzFeed, Mindbodygreen, and more.

Else shares how living in an organized space fosters a sense of calm, and allows us to focus our energy on what matters most.

Elsa founded her business, Composed Living based on her desire to help other families live well in their homes, and create peace for people in their surroundings. She sees beauty in all situations, no matter how chaotic they may appear on the outside, and she funnels her passion to transform those spaces into organized beauty. She loves finding ways to repurpose or re-imagine an existing belonging, or discover an unusual and beautiful use for an everyday item.

We loved this conversation with Elsa and it felt like we had all known each other for years. The foundation and values of Composed Living are so much in line with the Art of Living Well and it was fun to talk about how living in an organized space fosters a sense of calm and allows us to focus our energy on what matters most.

We talk about how organization is not just about decluttering your home. It's about implementing functional systems that allow you to compose the life of your dreams.

Elsa's philosophy entails helping you create the happiest version of your life, whether by decluttering, organizing, or beautifying!

We talk about Feng-shui, which is a practice of looking at our living spaces and working environments to strike a balance with the natural world. Elsa shares tips to create positive energy in your home.

Elsa is also very focused on conscience consumerism and she shares her tips on how to be mindful during the decluttering and organizing process. She educates people on why they don't need to be buying as much as they are and she shares tips and stores that are making it easy to recycle old/stained clothes that can't be donated.

Elsa shares her fun and creative Corona-style anniversary, which she pulled off thanks to help from RMBO Collective, a full service creative agency.

We met Elsa through the professional and social organization Heymama, which is a community of career-driven mothers who have each others' backs and actively seek to improve their lives and the lives of those around them.

  • E41: How to carpe diem every day with Jasmine Brett Stringer

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Jasmine Stringer, a speaker, lifestyle expert, influencer and strategist.

In today's conversation we have meaningful discussion with Jasmine about her background and how to become a person of action and of service. She talks about precious moments and her ability to help people live authentic, connected, and mindful lives. She tells us all about her new #sharethemicmn venture and her mission to seize the day.

#SHARETHEMICMN's mission is to amplify the work, lives, and stories of dynamic Brown/Black women residing in Minnesota by expanding the reach of their voices.

Through storytelling, exposure, and relationship development, the #SHARETHEMICMN campaign, founded by Jasmine strives to make Minnesota a more inclusive and equitable state.

Jasmine believes the newly developed relationships will lead to new understanding and insights that will be impactful in tackling and overcoming unconscious biases, racial injustices and racial inequities.

#SHARETHEMICN launched on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Every Wednesday during the month of July we have paired Black/Brown women with allies (men and women) that have agreed to"share their mic," (their Twitter or Instagram account) for the day. Starting in August, they will continue the "mic shares" bi-monthly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month through the end of the year.

You will not want to miss this inspiring conversation!

Jasmine is a keynote speaker, award-winning author of Seize Your Life: How to Carpe Diem Every Day, on-air TV personality and host of the podcast and lifestyle blog Carpe Diem with Jasmine. In the early 2000s, Jasmine was living her life like so many others — on autopilot, without vision or purpose — until she was given an unexpected gift. A lay off! As she said goodbye to her "corporate gig" she realized she hadn't been truly happy or fulfilled in years. So she made a choice not to stay miserable any longer and to do whatever it took to find happiness wherever she could.

Jasmine leveraged a pivotal moment in her life to learn the true meaning of carpe diem. She found endless, little ways to connect with herself and others through "JAZZ'ed UP" DIY projects, style, entertaining and travel on a budget. Today, Jasmine is on a mission to help people live empowered and authentic lives. Through her Seize Your Life keynotes, workshops, and customized coaching sessions, Jasmine guides clients and audiences through a simple process to identify their goals and achieve their personal definition of success.

Jasmine's common-sense approach to creating a life of one's own has inspired thousands of people across the world to carpe diem! Jasmine has shared her positive message to corporate and nonprofit organizations such as Land O' Lakes, Federal Reserve Bank, Airbnb, Cargill, Goodwill, Mondelēz International, Bayer and the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. Jasmine inspires revelation and change by leveraging her experiences working with some of the world's biggest brands including Kraft Foods, General Mills, Toyota, Box Tops for Education, Fox Searchlight, Publicis Groupe and the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN TV). Additionally, Jasmine speaks on how to effectively network and how to build synergy and develop interpersonal skills- core tools for living a vision-driven life.

Jasmine is a graduate of American University's Kogod School of Business in Washington, D.C. She was named a Twin Cities Fearless Woman in 2017 and a Woman of Promise by the Girl Scouts in 2012. Additionally, she was awarded Distinguished Alumna of American University. Ebony Magazine featured her as one of its "30 Future Leaders Under the Age of 30 in America."

Jasmine is based in Minneapolis, but can often be found two hours south of the city working with her husband Roger on their family farm.

  • E40: Discover Nourishing and delicious meals created by Emily Maxson to inspire you to use food as medicine

We are so excited for our conversation today with Emily Maxson of Emily's Fresh Kitchen.

Emily is a recipe developer, trained chef and certified health coach who loves to eat, cook, and think about food. She creates simple healthy recipes that are adaptable to follow different dietary theories, if necessary. She believes that one of the greatest things we can do for our overall health is to cook our own meals, which many of us are doing more of right now, and we couldn't agree more. This can be intimidating for some, but Emily creates flavorful recipes with healthy ingredients that are simple to follow and that encourage people to cook at home.

Emily is a trained chef and health coach. In 1998 she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and she had surgery to remove part of her intestines. Over the next 10 years, she really struggled with digestive issues, abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, and general malaise. She took pills, had intravenous therapy, gave herself shots, and spent time in hospitals.

In today's conversation Emily shares her personal health journey with Crohn's disease and how her curiosity, love of food, culinary background and her faith helped her heal herself through the power of food. Her story is so inspiring for everyone and especially those who have been frustrated by not being able to get to the root cause of their disease.

Emily talks about how she discovered the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which has helped thousands of people eliminate or control the debilitating symptoms of diseases like Crohn's, colitis, celiac, diverticulitis, diabetes and food related allergies. After reading the book "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" she decided to try this strict grain-free, sugar-free, lactose-free, nothing-processed diet for 18 months.

Emily shares her tips for people who are looking to adapt a specific diet to address underlying health concerns and her success and approach will motivate you to discover the power of food as medicine.

She no longer takes medications or spends time in hospitals and she is able to eat a normal diet again. While she can tolerate most foods, she is still very conscious of what she eats, focusing on whole foods that promote healing and limiting harmful foods.

Emily appreciates that what works for one person may not necessarily work for the next and creates recipes that are adaptable to various diets.

We highly recommend that you follow Emily on IG for the most delicious, simple and healthy recipes. We've recently made her delicious and easy peach Burrata salad and chicken bruschetta, which are perfect for summer BBQs.

She is working on a cookbook right now and a few other projects so you'll definitely want to follow her to receive her exciting updates.

  • E39: The power to heal through food with nutritionist and biochemist Karen Hurd

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, nutritionist and biochemist Karen Hurd.

In today's conversation we dive into Karen's powerful personal story about how she saved her daughter's life from organophosphate (household pesticide) poisoning by researching, studying and implementing her own program to save her little girl's life.

Choosing to employ the alternative method of nutrition, she began to administer a plan for healing using the knowledge she had gained through her research. Much to the amazement of the doctors, her daughter began to improve. Within six weeks, her daughter had made such improvement that there were no more measurable signs of distress. The only question remained if any permanent neural damage would be manifest as she grew older. Her daughter is now 31 years old, with no signs of permanent neural damage or any other damage.

We also discuss beans (and how they help remove toxins from the body), fiber, the "s" word SUGAR, hormones, and so much more. You will not want to miss this very moving and powerful episode.

Karen is a graduate of the American Academy of Nutrition (now called Huntington College of Health Sciences) and completed her coursework in Comprehensive Nutrition. This institution is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency. She received her Master of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Saint Joseph in December 2017 and is currently enrolled at The George Washington University in the Master of Public Health program. Karen holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Languages (Spanish as a major, German as a minor) from Truman State University, graduating in 1980 Summa Cum Laude. She graduated from Kirkwood High School in 1976 ranking in the top 1% of the graduating class of over 600 students. Upon graduation from college, Karen entered the U.S. Army and served four years as an officer in the Military Intelligence Corps. During this time she completed the Officer's Basic Course, the Electronic Warfare Course, and graduated from the Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defense course as the Honor Student. She received the Army Commendation Medal for outstanding service upon completion of her tour of duty. In 1984, she resigned her Regular Army commission to raise her family. She completed her time in service holding the rank of Captain. Karen has been married to her husband, Steven, for 42 years. They have five children, ages 26 through 35 years. They reside in Fall Creek, Wisconsin.

Karen also is the executive producer of Scene and Hurd Productions, a film production company. To view information about Karen's current production, go to www.SceneandHurd.com.

Practicing for 30 years, Karen's philosophy in approaching health is that of Hippocrates (the father of modern medicine) when he said "Let food be thy medicine, and thy medicine be food." Karen applies her knowledge at the biomolecular level to understand the cause of the health problems we face and what dietary and lifestyle changes are needed to correct that cause and unlock our best health.

  • E37: Creating the framework to elevate your home so you have space to do the things that light you up with home functionality coach Kristina Browning

We are thrilled to bring you today's guest, Kristina Browning. Kristina is a licensed Realtor in Oregon state. She is also a Home Functionality Coach and Podcaster helping clients choose the right home and then mold it specific to their own family and needs.

She writes and produces a podcast called "Home Space and Reason" about home styling, automation and functionality. You'll even hear a bit of history and psychology so this isn't your typical HOME podcast! This podcast would be most enjoyed by people who like HGTV, making their home space "elevated" in appearance, organization and possibly exploring how home automation could benefit them.

Kristina is a wife and a mother to a seven year old boy. Her passion is helping people create a home that thrives not just for today, but for the long haul.

In our conversation we dive into the functionality of the home and how you can set it up to function for the framework of your life.

Kristina works with clients by asking them questions about their space, such as how it's being used and if they have the space to do what brings them joy. A few of the things we discuss is lighting, paper, grow lights and clutter and how that can affect your space. We so loved this conversation and we are very inspired to make changes in our own homes!

Lighting info: Here's a breakdown of light bulb color temperature:
    • Soft white (2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin) is warm and yellow, the typical color range you get from incandescent bulbs. This light gives a warm and cozy feeling and is often best for living rooms, dens and bedrooms.
    • Warm white (3,000 to 4,000 Kelvin) is more yellowish-white. These bulbs are best suited for kitchens and bathrooms.
    • Bright white (4,000 to 5,000 Kelvin) is between white and blue tones. With a less cozy and more energetic feel, bulbs with this color range are best for work spaces (like a home office or garage)
    • Daylight (5,000 to 6,500 Kelvin) has a more bluish tone. This light color will maximize contrast for colors, making it ideal for working, reading or applying makeup.

  • E35: Leaning into vulnerability and living a conscious life with healing elements studio owner Samantha Shvetzoff

Today's guest is Samantha Shvetzoff, who is the owner of Healing Elements Studio in St. Paul, MN. Samantha is a mother and wife, a facilitator of community spaces and a meditation and mindfulness guide who loves people and stories.

Since giving birth to her son nearly two years ago, she has been re-informing her own identity and story and is passionate about holding space for humans to integrate the widely vast resources available to live in divine wholeness.

Samantha has truly done the work on herself and her calm and lovely demeanor will inspire and motivate you to begin your own journey of living in the present moment and create opportunities for stillness in your life.

She encourages individuals to lean into vulnerability, and to cozy up into the spaces that need nurturing with inquiry and a desire to live your authentic truth. She believes that humans are deeply disconnected from our inherent connected nature and that wholeness is our birthright. She leans into the practices of meditation, yoga nidra, mantra, somatics and relies on mindfulness as a lifestyle to create foundational and functional change.

She is fascinated with recalibrating the nervous system and challenging our current structures within the body, mind and emotional systems. She encourages folks to show up to their beliefs, patterns of thought and the way they occupy space with inquiry to uncover wholeness, which is often deeply submerged beneath layers that are no longer serving the self or the collective universal energy of love.

Healing Elements is a unique space of healing and source of connectedness. It is Samantha's dharma to maintain this space for her community and for the larger collective of humanity. She believes deeply in her core that the transformational practices of yoga, meditation, movement, massage therapy, energy healing, herbal medicine and so many other ancient healing techniques all carry infinite opportunity to heal humans, create wider circles of connectedness and bring you closer toward love.
