  • E32: Older, stronger, faster harder. Over 50 triathlete Laura Swartz inspires and motivates you to try something new

Today's guest is Laura Swartz, a triathlete who has competed nationally and internationally at amateur world championships.

You will be in awe and inspired listening to Laura's story and how her persistency, hard work and positive mental outlook have resulted in athletic achievements into her 50's. Laura's motto is that "age is a number but it doesn't define your athletic ability or opportunity. You are not too old to try new tricks."

Growing up if someone told Laura that she couldn't achieve one of her goals she just worked harder to prove them wrong. She is highly motivated and driven to pursue her goals and continues to push herself into her 50's.

Hard work, training and mental toughness has led her to a 2nd place finish in her age group at Nationals and she had her fastest ever bike split (avg mph) at the Minneapolis Tri last summer.

Laura doesn't let her age determine her abilities and this episode will motivate and inspire you to think the same. Regardless of whether you've competed in a race before, have it on your bucket list or simply have a goal to move everyday, you will be inspired to tackle a new physical endeavor after hearing our conversation with Laura Swartz.

  • E31: Michelle Horovitz from Appetite for Change is leading a food justice organization that has built a community around health, wealth and social change through food.

Today's inspiring guest is Michele Horovitz. Michelle is one of the co-founders and Executive Director of Appetite For Change (AFC), a nonprofit social enterprise organization dedicated to using food as a tool to build health, wealth and social change. AFC works with residents to build strong families and healthy, equitable communities around food. They also own and operate Kindred Kitchen, a shared commercial kitchen incubator and Breaking Bread Café and Catering, a youth social enterprise serving North Minneapolis.

Michelle graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Bioethics and Spanish and earned a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. She worked as an Assistant Public Defender in Miami-Dade County before working for James Beard Award winning Chef Michelle Bernstein as a prep cook, line cook and assistant to the pastry chef. After returning to Minneapolis she co-founded Appetite For Change. She is a dedicated leader, passionate about social and racial justice, and serves on the Board of Directors for Jewish Community Action. Michelle enjoys yoga, biking and spending time with her family and friends. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband, two children, two dogs and 1 hamster.

In this inspiring episode Michelle discusses how eating healthy is tough for everyone, regardless of age, family status, how much time or money you have. She then explains how living in a community without farmers markets, healthy retail options, limited grocery store availability and reliable transportation make it so much harder.

We talk about how people often think that low-income communities just don't know what healthy is, or care about eating well, but it's often the policies systems, and the environment around us that influences our eating habits. Often times communities lack resources to solve their own health issues, but they don't need to be told what the solutions are, or "saved" by people who live outside their communities. It's more about the resources, social networks and assets in a community that prevent people from achieving their wellness goals.

We also discuss how health and wellness means different things for different people, but it's often stereotypes and fears of the unknown that keep us from trying new things. For example: black people aren't vegan, eating "healthy" is a white person thing, you have to have a lot of money to eat fresh and local foods, growing your own food is hard and you can't do it if you don't own your own property, etc.

We also hear all all about the foundation, the cafe, catering company, community garden and all the other amazing things her organization is working on - including a super cool rap video "Grow Food."

Michelle ends by sharing a powerful story about a woman, her journey and how Appetite for Change impacted her life.

  • E30: A Holistic Approach to Declutter Your Physical Space & Your Mind With Professional Organizer Michelle Vig

Today's guest is Michele Vig, who is a Professional Organizer

Michele Vig, an accomplished executive in corporate America for two decades, founded Neat Little Nest to follow her personal passion to help unlock people from their clutter and to create the beautifully organized spaces they've always dreamed about.

Michele and her business have been featured in a variety of new media including Domino Magazine, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine, KARE 11 TV, WCCO-TV, FOX 9 TV, as WCCO, and MY TALK radio.

In order to holistically declutter your life, you need to dig into each of these areas, which she will dive into today. Organizing is much of an art that is unique to everyone.

Michelle opens up and shares her own personal journey and what led her to embark on her professional organization business. Of course we talk about many hot topics when it comes to decluttering, such as, photos, paper and objects that carry emotional attachment. Michelle shares her unique and personalized approach to working with clients, whereby she asks thoughtful questions to get to the root of what's causing the clutter or disorganized space. She helps her clients get "unstuck" and work through the history and stories embedded in the physical objects that are often difficult to remove from their homes.

The advice she shares through her own personal experience as well as working with numerous clients, will inspire you to listen to your heart, slow down and hit pause when needed, in order to find peace in your day to day life. This episode is perfectly placed during this current environment and we encourage each of you to find one piece of advice to implement into your life today to bring you joy. • E29: A deep dive into Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine with healer Monica Helland

Today's episode with Monica Helland was so much fun! We took a field trip to Fusion Life Spa in Deephaven, MN. It is such a beautiful and relaxing space with the cutest gift shop. You just want to hang out there all day. And the massages and facials are pretty awesome as well - in addition to Monica's services of course!

This episode was recorded shortly before the Coronavirus Pandemic exploded and stay at home orders were put in place. Please keep this in mind as you listen to the epsiode.

Monica is a second generation acupuncturist and herbalist with a warm and innovative approach to whole body health. Monica is Minneapolis' active expert in digestive health, fertility, and cosmetic acupuncture. Her approach to healing stems from revered and ancient remedies. Along with her clinical experience, she brings to her practice a deeply intuitive and gentle approach to acupuncture and Eastern medicine.

Licensed in acupuncture by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, and nationally board-certified from the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM), Monica graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Masters Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Minnesota College of Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences University in 2011. As of January 2019 Monica has begun working toward her Doctoral degree with the Pacific College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Her journey into Traditional Chinese Medicine began at a young age when Monica's aunt, Diana Gross, L.Ac., a well-respected acupuncturist in Minneapolis, introduced her to the medicine. Over the years, Monica personally received great benefit from Diana's treatments and a wealth of knowledge from her teachings. Monica says, "Today I continue the legacy my aunt Diana Gross, L.Ac. began many years ago, and now I, too, am an ambassador of this great medicine."

Monica lives with her husband Charles, son Otis, and Siberian forest cats Sofia and Viggo in Plymouth, MN.

In today's conversation, we dive into Traditional Chinese Medicine and specifically acupuncture. We learn how Monica's services can treat and heal many conditions including: pain, digestive health, women's fertility/women's health, insomnia, allergies, Menopause, ADHD and much more. She even works in cosmetic acupuncture which we really want to learn more about and we are planning to have Monica back for an entire episode on this topic!

Monica also explains how she helps patients determine what the underlying root problem is of the patients "dis-ease" in the body. She does this through a variety of methods. Monica shares a few stories of her patient's experiences with acupuncture and how it has helped them.

We also discuss illness prevention and building immunity whether it pertains to the common flu or a Coronavirus and she leaves us with some tips and tricks on how to be on top of seasonal allergies. We also discuss "Liver Season" and a few tips on how to get your liver up and going for the day.

We wrap-up talking about ear seeds. Ear seeds are small seeds used to stimulate pressure points in your ear. They're a type of auriculotherapy, which refers to acupressure or acupuncture focused on the ear. They're based on the same general principles as acupuncture.

  • E28: E28: Learn about our journey to discover clean-crafted wine & becoming Scout & Cellar consultants
In today's episode we talk about clean-crafted wines and why you should care about what's in your favorite glass of vino. While we both love wine, we've started to notice negative side effects of drinking wine and began diving deeper into the ingredients and farming practices that often result in headaches and honestly, feeling like crap the next day. We have both been on a mission in recent years to find clean wine that tastes good and we have tried a variety of organic, clean and sustainable wines.

    So what is clean-crafted wine?

-Grown naturally with no synthetic pesticides -Bottled consciously—no added sugars, chemical preservatives, or anything else -Nothing added that isn't found in nature -Clean-Crafted makes us unique—no one else can claim Clean-Crafted™ We love that every bottle of clean-crafted wine is independently tested twice to make sure it is free of sugars, chemical preservatives, or anything else that isn't found in nature.

We're not suggesting you should start drinking daily but for those who do choose to enjoy wine we are excited to share a cleaner option that can be delivered right to your door. What we also love about Scout & Cellar is that you can choose which varieties you want to buy and you can order at your leisure. We also love that there are a variety of price points and types of wine that vary based on the season (check out their great rosé collection).

Here is a link to our shop along with a few of our favorite wines.

She holds a certification from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in Health and Wellness Coaching. Betsy is also a Four Desires coach (Dharma or Soul Coach), which is a systematic approach to uncover the clients' deepest purpose, what their limiting beliefs are, and how to create a life of fulfillment and meaning. She leads numerous workshops as well as working one on one with clients in the practices of meditation, mindfulness, stress reduction, and building a life of intuition and intention. Betsy founded Amrita Health and Wellness as the culmination of her years of teaching and mentoring and uses the modalities of yoga, integrative and intuitive nutrition, as well as mindfulness practices, to guide her clients towards their highest purpose and their best life.

  • E27: Restaurateurs Chef Gavin Kaysen and Alison Arth get vulnerable and talk about majestic moments, kindness and how they've pivoted during Corona

Tune in today for one of the most insightful, inspirational and super interesting conversations that will leave you motivated to fill up someone else's bucket and sprinkle more acts of kindness in the world. We are honored to have restaurateurs Chef Gavin Kaysen and Alison Arth with us today where they open up and share how they love creating majestic moments for their guests and how filling up someone else's bucket makes your day as much as the receiver.

Award-winning chef Gavin Kaysen is the founder of Soigné Hospitality Group and helms three nationally recognized restaurants in the Minneapolis metropolitan area: Spoon and Stable, a 2015 James Beard Award Finalist for Best New Restaurant, Bellecour, a French-inspired bistro in and his newest concept Demi, an intimate 20-seat tasting menu experience also located in the North Loop.

Chef Kaysen refined his craft in contemporary American fine dining by dedicating time to some of the world's best restaurants in New York City, Switzerland, and London. He is privileged to call two of the world's most celebrated chefs, Daniel Boulud and Paul Bocuse, his mentors. Today, Chef Kaysen helps the next generation of young culinarians refine their skills in the kitchen as one of the founding mentors of the nonprofit ment'or BKB Foundation, for which he currently serves as President of Team USA. Chef Kaysen is the proud winner of two James Beard Awards – Rising Star Chef of the Year in 2008, and Best Chef: Midwest in 2018.

We are also fortunate to have Alison Arth, the Director of Development for Soigné with us today as well. After trying her hand in the kitchen and realizing quickly that cooking was destined to be a beloved hobby rather than a fruitful career, Alison earned her business degree from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration.

Recruited by Daniel Booloo's Dinex Group immediately after graduating, Alison served in an operations-heavy leadership role that was intensely focused on executing successful restaurant openings and managing large-scale creative projects. This is where her professional relationship and decade-long friendship with Gavin began.

Alison's passion for leading like-minded hospitality businesses to sustainable success inspired her to found her consulting business, Salt & Roe, in 2014. In support of that mission, she authored her first book, "How to Open a Restaurant," in partnership with OpenTable in 2016.

She was a key partner in the opening of Spoon and Stable and Bellecour and now focuses on strategic planning, leadership development, and creating a thoughtful plan for growth for Soigné Hospitality in conjunction with Gavin.

Alison serves on the Board of Directors for La Cocina, a non-profit organization in San Francisco that provides industry-specific technical assistance and access to market opportunities for low-income women looking to launch, formalize, and grow their own food businesses.

And if that isn't enough, Gavin has also partnered with Andrew Zimmern where they combined their knowledge of sports and food to create a unique catering company for professional athletes. At KZ ProVisioning they work alongside professional sports teams to create balanced, healthy and delicious meals throughout the entire season.

Both Gavin and Alison get vulnerable about how they've pivoted their businesses during these challenging times. They talk about how they are focused on the health and happiness of their employees, who provide a sense of home, comfort and belonging in each of their restaurants.

Gavin and Alison both share the ways that they take care of themselves, which is critical not only in this current environment but in general given the demands of their industry.

Gavin talks about KZ Provisioning, his partnership with Andrew Zimmern, which provides healthy, balanced food to fuel professional athletes and how it's positively changing their performance.

Regardless of where you live or if you've had the privilege of experiencing their restaurants first hand, we know you will be inspired by this conversation, which shines a light on the passion, commitment and dedication that Gavin and Alison instill in everything they do.

If you live in the Twin Cities we highly recommend ordering take-out from Spoon and Stable or Bellecour and create a majestic moment in your own home. Check out their newly created Heart of the House Foundation and how they are providing bridge support to team members and their families during these uncertain times.
