In this show, I share more thoughts on my new, recent longevity mantra: perform, recover, perform, recover.

These thoughts were inspired by an interaction I had with my friend Michael Kummer—host of The Primal Shift podcast—who recently wrote a newsletter article about the longevity practices of the increasingly prominent biohacker Bryan Johnson.

While I appreciate a lot of things that Bryan does in service to the health community by trying all these cutting-edge strategies and then reporting back on his results, I do have some thoughts on the tendency many people have these days to drift a little too far towards high-tech anti-aging methods—particularly when it comes to taking a flawed approach to a biohacking strategy.

Just look at Bryan Johnon’s decision to eat fewer calories based on the assumption that calorie restriction does indeed help with healthy aging….When it comes to biohacking, are some extreme methods too extreme? And could we be making some huge mistakes in the process? Find out in this episode!

I'm pleased to welcome Henry Abbott, the author of a new book called Ballistic: The New Science of Injury Free Athletic Performance!

What an interesting conversation we had, and we went on a wide ranging journey through several topics of interest in modern big time sports. Henry has a longtime sports background–he is an award-winning journalist who led ESPN’s 60 person NBA digital and print team. So he is a longtime NBA guy behind the scenes, and in this episode, he tells us what it's like out there, touching on concerns like this crazy long 82 game season where we expect these powerful, explosive athletes to perform night after night—this kind of turns the sport into a severe long endurance grind where you can pretty much predict the athletes are going to get injured. So Henry went on a three year long quest to determine what cutting edge scientific advancements we have to measure and program athletes to train properly to prevent injury.

The title Ballistic is interesting because he focuses on the importance of ballistic high impact training, which we typically shy away from, thinking that it's too traumatizing. I really appreciated this because you've probably heard me on the show talk often about my nagging minor injuries that are always a battle and a challenge as I strive to compete in masters track and field. So you're going to get some good tidbits and also learn what the top of the line athletes are doing—he references his connection to this training facility in Santa Barbara, California called P3, it's operated by an old triathlon friend of mine named Dr. Marcus Elliott, and he is doing some really interesting data collection and analysis.

You will learn why Henry says that almost everyone has some sort of hip dysfunction, whether it's hip flexor weakness or a lack of mobility, and ways that you can progress to become more functional, especially in the three most important joints that control impact forces—the ankle, knee, and the hip. Shawn is one of the world’s leading health experts as the bestselling author of Sleep Smarter and host of the #1 rated Model Health Show.

The first part of the discussion is about foot functionality. Enjoy this second show with Alex, where we left the mic on after our interview emphasizing his book, The Explorer’s Gene, and started talking about Mark Sisson and my new book, Born To Walk.

We planned to have a “friendly debate” about the book’s premise that running is a bad idea for most people. Alex, as a longtime runner, had a much different basic notion—that running is a rich and meaningful form of enjoying recreation, physical fitness and health.

Well, there were no fireworks during our talk, but rather a nuanced discussion of the benefits of running when you do it correctly. The best takeaway from Alex is: If you are able to run and recover from running workouts, it’s great. But of course you must avoid overtraining.

I welcome Michael Brandt, co-founder and CEO of Ketone IQ, to the show for a conversation about supplemental ketones!

I have a great discussion to share with you from Philip Pape, the host of the Wits and Weights podcast.

I had the pleasure of joining him on his show, and he was a really sharp guy with some nice, focused, and quantified insights about how to lose excess body fat the right way. In this episode, you will hear us discuss the fitness industry, what he's doing, and the always popular topic of trying to drop excess body fat. Phillip stated what I believe to be a life changing insight about weight loss by saying: it all starts with strength training. You have to work on building muscle in order to succeed, even with dietary transition, because if you don't, you're going to fall into old habits—you're going to get hungry, you're going to want to chomp on something. As you will learn in this show, when you start working hard on strength and resistance training, you are going to have muscles actively taking glucose in from the bloodstream and replenishing the larger muscle, the more muscle mass that you build, as well as recovering from the workouts where you are burning glucose in the workout, burning glycogen, and then replenishing stored glycogen. What an interesting and very simple takeaway—that it's not just about locking in on your diet, watching your portion sizes, and all the things that we've been programmed for so long to think is the main starting point to getting the physique that you dream of. It starts with hard work and pumping the iron.

We also have a fascinating conversation in the middle where we talk about this theme that I've talked about on the podcast often—the fully fueled approach to fitness and longevity, where you're eating more food, moving more frequently, recovering faster, and living longer. This topic came up as Phillip was describing a gaining phase that he goes through in his training where he's doing some strenuous workouts, the hypertrophy style workout, and deliberately and systematically consuming more calories over a sustained period of time, whether it's a month or six weeks. And during that time period, what a surprise!—he has more energy, he's more active, he’s tapping his foot more at his desk and feeling great and recovering and building muscle. So I think it's a nice reflection on the importance of fueling yourself with natural, nutrient dense food exclusively, and then getting to work and working those muscles. That is the path to not only getting off that stubborn, excess body fat that might have been sitting there even when you're doing hard work on your diet, but to opening a new portal and exposing yourself to new possibilities. You will also learn what 7 things destroy attraction and hear wonderful insights from Mia Moore, who highlights the adverse effects of becoming socialized to believe that relationships are mainly about hard work. Mia discusses how life experience, including both positive and negative aspects of past relationships, can frame one’s perspective and personal growth for future relationships.
