  • 72: Pandemic Relationships: Dorothy Greco on Marriage

My review of Dorothy’s book, Marriage in the Middle, for Christianity Today

    ONE SMALL STEP

If you’re married, one great question might be to ask your spouse where he or she sees that you’ve lost imagination. Dorothy also recommends a practice of Examen, or even just confession, as the glue that holds her marriage together. Spend some time in prayer asking for your own heart and behavior to be illuminated. Then confess your sin to each other knowing we have a good God who loves you and wants the best for your marriage.

  • 71: Pandemic Relationships: Todd Wilson on The Enneagram Goes to Church

This is a great conversation on how social media and the pandemic has changed relationships in the church. Listen in to Todd Wilson help listeners learn about the Enneagram, the wisdom of dark emotions, and being self-aware for the sake of others.

IVP's Enneagram devotionals are a great gift for you or a friend

    ONE SMALL STEP

Todd reminds us that the best way we have to love others sacrificially is often by leaning into the part of ourselves that we tend to repress: thinking, feeling or doing. Consider which is hardest for you to access or which question seems the fuzziest: What do I think about this? What do I feel in this situation? or What it mine to do?

Then, as you reenter community and relationships post-pandemic, begin to ask yourself that question. If your doing center is repressed instead of thinking too much or feeling, what can you do? If the thinking center is repressed, consider how you might begin to think through a particular challenge. If your feeling center is repressed, ask what you feel in a given situation and how might you consider others’ feelings?

  • 70: Jen Pollock Michel on Habits of Faith

This is a great conversation on how faith might grow, not because we have it mentally sorted or we’re traveling from emotional high to emotional high, but because we practice particular habits. Jen Pollock Michel joins me to talk about habit, corporate practices of faith, and how we might explore the bible with others (for those who believe and those who don’t — including ourselves at times).

You can listen to Jen’s episodes on Finding Holy about finding home in a big city (Episode 3), and an Advent series we did together beginning on Episode 28.

    ONE SMALL STEP

Think of one of the small habits you already have — like doing a load of laundry or going on a daily walk — and consider what sort of habit of faith you might add to it. Maybe you talk to a friend on your walk about spiritual matters, or listen to scripture being read as you fold laundry. Find ways to attach a faith habit to the habits you already have.

Consider taking a social media fast — try a week, or turn off your phone off on Sunday. We are formed by what we ingest and social media without some limits can malform us easily. When you take a social media fast, we can come to terms with missing something and realize this is not the end. It might bring up some hard emotions, but will help us remember that we don’t have to be formed by the hashtags.
