Back in 2016, you & I could be sitting down over coffee and you could say “Coop – we should be health & wellness coaches!” Then we could give each other a high five, walk out the door and start calling ourselves health & wellness coaches. Or – on the employee wellness side of the equation, a wellness company could hire nice people, place them in a call center with a fine-tuned script and then tell potential partners they offered health & wellness coaching. There were no standards of practice. No code of ethics. No national oversight board or certification process. Anyone could call themselves a coach – and there was essentially no way to tell who was credible or not. That all changed in 2017.
Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted resource for the best in engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights. Today’s guest is Leigh-Ann Webster, the Executive Director of the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching, or NBHWC, which was created in 2017 and has since changed the world of health & wellness coaching from the “wild wild west” to an established, credible and growing profession. Our longtime listeners know we rarely bring a guest back more than once, but Leigh-Ann is the exception, as we try to get on her schedule about every 15 months to provide you with a ”state of the profession” and the latest updates and upcoming developments in the world of health & wellness.

What if you discovered a 60 second assessment you could do each morning with no special equipment that would essentially let you see how your body is responding to various stressors and changes to daily habits like sleep, alcohol intake, exercise and more? Now there is – and the insights anyone can garner from this info can be a game-changer in our lives, regardless of our focused pursuit.
Welcome to the Catalyst 360 Podcast – your trusted source for engaging, evidence-based health, wellness & performance insights. Today’s guest is Dr. Marco Altini, one of the world’s foremost experts in something called HRV or Heart Rate Variability. Dr. Altini holds a PhD in Data Science & a pair of Masters degrees in Computer Science Engineering & Human Movement Science. He is also the creator of a powerful app called HRV4Training that has been fully validated for its accuracy. If you’ve been a listener here for long, you’ve heard several guests note the intrigue around HRV. Two guests specifically – with no sponsorship connection – identified Dr. Altini’s tool as the tool of choice and he was very kind to accept our invitation to dig into the details as our guest. A brief note about today’s format: The first portion of our discussion will focus in on HRV & the value it brings to overall health, wellness & performance. We’ll then spend the back half of the discussion focusing on its use to enhance athletic performance along with a few specific questions about deeper layers of the app. So, whether you’re curious about the application to everyday life or want to dig into fitness details, we’ll cover it.

How’s that “to-do” list looking? What if I were to tell you the single biggest change you could make to the list in terms of your future success would be to subtract? That’s right – while our minds naturally think adding a new exercise or routine is the solution, one of the best ways to make things better actually comes down to one word: subtract.
Welcome to the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Dr. Leidy Klotz, who studies the science of design, and the way in which our own daily choices can be positively impacted – NOT by adding something new - but instead through the use of subtraction. His research has appeared in both Nature and Science and his debut popular science book, Subtract, is among the most influential published in 2021. He is a frequent guest on programs including Hidden Brain, Freakonomics, and NPR. You’ve likely seen his articles in the Washington Post, Fast Company, Harvard Business Review, Scientific American and elsewhere.
For more information about Dr. Leidy Klotz, access his website here: https://www.leidyklotz.com/ or his book can be found here.

Being a working parent isn’t easy and it seems to be getting more and more difficult with each passing day. It also is now the norm. In 2020, 95 percent of married couples with children had at least one working parent, and 60 percent of married-couple families with children were both employed, while 72 percent of parents who lived without a partner were likely to be employed. What if there were evidence-based tools and resources we could access that would ditch the guilt, manage the feeling of overload, and enhance the quality of our lives?
Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s discussion brings Dr. Yael Schonbrun, author of the new book Work, Parent, Thrive to your ears. For our long-time listeners, the name might possibly ring a bell as she joined us almost 2 ½ years ago and you were a big fan. So with her new book coming out, we were excited to have a great reason to bring her back! You can access her book at Amazon or Bookshop. Or tap into additional resources on her website and her podcast website.

Journaling is one of those things - perhaps similar to flossing our teeth - most of us know is valuable... we "should" do it. Yet - we rarely do. What if, instead of guilting ourselves into the process, we were able to tap into the magnetic draw of journaling? What if we were to discover the way in which journaling allows us to draw out the best versions of ourselves, to write and rewrite our story the way it was meant to be written? That - and the practical elements of putting journaling into practice, is exactly what we'll be discussing in this special episode on why journaling might just be the world's greatest mining tool.
There will be no ”should” or guilt included in this discussion – only opportunity and practical ideas that just like those early miners, you can take to the bank. Over the next few minutes, I’m going to share with you how to activate the magnet of journaling… tap into why our story is so important – and the opportunity journaling provides to re-write that story…discuss various strategies for making the process fit YOU… and provide some tips for getting started. We’re releasing this episode the week of Thanksgiving, as the weeks between now and the new year are often the catalyst for considering more deeply the way in which we’re living our lives. It’s my hope this special episode provides you with a valuable tool for doing so as you move forward. If you have a journal or notebook handy while you’re listening, I’ll be providing you with a few things to consider with pen in hand along the way.

Are you rich? While our default answer likely focuses on the way in which we currently evaluate our financial situation, is money what makes us rich? Is it possible to effectively address realistic short and long-term financial goals without sacrificing our health, relationships, ethics or other elements that are important to living a full life? Or are we stuck having to choose between our money and our life?
Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Dr. Shannon Hayes, author of the thought-provoking book Redefining Rich, which I expected to be filled with the typical blah blah blah generic advice we’ve all heard a hundred times. Instead, I was left considering a new way for Suzanna and I approach that choice between our money and our lives.
Dr. Hayes and her husband walked away from their career paths and chose to forge a life on her family’s frost-plagued mountain farm, starting up a small café in town. They built a business – and a life – from which we can all glean valuable guidance, regardless of our current setting, career path, or business start-up status. And, along the way, you might just discover a secret or two that brings true living back to this thing we call life. Here's the link to access the Quality of Life Statement workbook she mentions in the interview.

"I'd do anything to be healthy, except eat right and exercise." We laugh when the comedian shares this insight from the stage, but then cringe when we realize the truth of that in our own lives and the lives of those around us. What is going on? Intriguingly, our brains are finely tuned based on a world that for most – no longer exists. Extremely palatable foods combining sugar, salt, fat and the like didn’t exist until recently in human history. As such, instincts designed to prevent starvation have carried us into a lifetime of obesity, diabetes and more. So what can we do?
Welcome to the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is neuroscientist and best-selling author of The Hungry Brain, Dr. Stephan Guyenet. He has a bachelors degree in biochemistry, a PhD in neuroscience and completed a post-doctoral fellowship on the neuroscience of obesity and eating behavior. His research publications in scientific journals have been cited more than 2,100 times. He doesn’t simply identify the science behind why we do what we do. Instead, he provides key insights on how we – or our friends, coaching clients and others - can effectively change course and thus change our lives for the better.

Don’t you just hate it when you don’t get a decent sleep? It seemingly throws off everything and ruins the day before it even gets started. And yes, the data appears to back that up. Sleep loss has been shown to increase inflammatory markers throughout the body. But wait a minute. What if there’s another layer to the discussion (and the data analysis)? What if a positive approach to life, something called trait positive affect (or PA) in the literature changes the equation? What if the way we look at that loss of sleep (and other things in life). Could our mental state buffer the proinflammatory effects of various forms of stress?
Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Dr. Carly Hunt. Dr. Hunt is a licensed psychologist, has a PhD in Counseling Psychology and a Masters in Kinesiology and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biobehavior pain research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. She is the founder of Present Mind Consulting and we discovered her when our son Joshua, who’s currently in med school with a special interest in sleep medicine, came across her research on the influence of affect on sleep loss. Us vs. Them. The “other side” just doesn’t get it. Whether politics, work or even family, the confusion arises because we aren’t seeing how the conflict itself has taken over. High conflict is the invisible hand of our time, creating a good vs. evil type of feud. And it results in our brains behaving differently, crystalizing certainty in our own superiority and a head-shaking about those on the other side.
Welcome to the latest episode of the Health, Wellness & Performance Catalyst. Today’s guest is Amanda Ripley, a New York Times bestselling author, an investigative journalist and co-founder of Good Conflict, a company that creates workshops and original content to help people get smarter about how they fight. Amanda’s most recent book is High Conflict: Why We Get Trapped and How We Get Out. For tools everyone can use right now, check out Amanda's free resources at www.TheGoodConflict.com. Her latest book is High Conflict. And if anyone wants help digging into a specific challenge, reach out to her at her weekly Slate podcast How To!

Legends about the Fountain of Youth have existed for millennia. In spite of rumors about discovery in Florida, the real fountain of youth comes from tapping into the growing research on longevity – the practical steps any of us can take to improve the quality – and potentially quantity – of the years we have remaining in this thing called life.
Welcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Today’s guest is Orthopedic surgeon and author Dr. Howard Luks. I first discovered Dr. Luks on Twitter. I’ve known hundreds of orthopedic surgeons over my 30+ years as a physical therapist, and this guy didn’t sound like any ortho I’d ever met. He encouraged skipping the MRI, holding off on surgery and more. His credentials were impeccable, and when he agreed to join us waaaaay back in Episode #70 to discuss orthopedic mythbusting, you made it one of our most popular episodes of all time. We’ve continued to communicate regularly over the years since, and with the release of his new book, Longevity, Simplified, we just had to get him back on the show. You’re going to love this one and likely send it to your cynical friends who still think running is bad for your knees, MRIs tell us everything and longevity is just based on luck.
You can find his book Longevity Simplified at Howardluksmd.com/book or follow him on Twitter @hjluks
