What if you could sit down with a physician and best-selling author who specialized in all of the health and wellness aspects of running and ask any question you'd like? Well, we don't literally take audience questions for this one, but Dr. Juliet McGrattan was willing to take on every single question we threw her way. You'll love her insights and appreciate the value she brings to both runners and non-runners when it comes to health, wellness & performance. From whether ibuprofen is a good choice to whether sex the night before a race helps or hinders performance, she addresses them all!

What if your orthopedic surgeon suggested you skip the MRI? Or if she suggested that knee scope probably isn’t worth pursuing? Or pointed out your arthritis is not due to your activity? Would you look back at the sign on the door to make sure you were actually in a surgeon’s office?
Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching podcast – one of our classic Hidden Gem episodes! I’m your host, Dr. Bradford Cooper and thanks to the magic of twitter, I discovered Dr. Howard Lucks, a respected orthopedic surgeon who didn’t sound like most orthopedic surgeons I’d met during my 30 years as a physical therapist and endurance athlete. The more I read, the more intrigued I became, and the more obvious you’d want to hear from him too.
Dr. Lucks is a Board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine for almost 25 years. He is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at New York Medical College and is the Chief of Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy at WMC Health, a branch of Westchester Medical Center. He’s also a trail runner, amateur cyclists and father to 3 children. He also – like most of you here – believes in the pursuit of better.

What if you could peek into a crystal ball and see the future of health care? Would you do it? Well, we can’t offer you a crystal ball but our guest is the next best thing when it comes to health and health care design.

What if everything we thought we knew about goals was wrong? What if the traditional "SMART" goals work in some situations but are exactly the opposite approach that works for the majority of us (and our coaching clients, employees, students and kids)? In episode #183 of the Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast, Dr. Trish Jackman discusses the evidence behind something called "Open Goals," how to use them and why they work so well. She also discusses flow, performance under pressure and so much more!

Breathing. It’s so simple that unless we’re struggling to do so due to something like an asthma attack or drowning, it never even crosses our minds. But what if we’re doing it wrong? Seriously – what if developing some simple changes to the way in which we breath could improve our health, our energy levels and our outcomes in life?
Today’s guest is James Nestor, popular journalist and best-selling author of the white-hot book BREATH: The New Science of a Lost Art. We’ll discuss his intriguing journey to examine the history of how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly and why we’re suffering from a laundry list of maladies—snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, autoimmune disease, allergies—because of it. And of course, we’ll talk about what this means for each of us and our lives based on the evidence, not simply headlines.

Intermittent fasting is a term that has become popularized in recent years, but the evidence often gets lost in the headline-chasing videos, blogs and posts. If you're a health coach, wellness coach or performance coach, you're likely getting a lot of questions about this topic but it's of interest to seemingly everyone. To cut through all the baloney, we sought out one of the world's most respected neuroscientists on the subject, Dr. Mark Mattson.
Dr. Mattson is a professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins and the Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging. His work has looked into how the brain and body respond and adapt to fasting and exercise. If there is an expert on the subject of Intermittent Fasting, Dr. Mattson is that expert. In fact, he is among the most highly cited neuroscientists in the world. To say we felt fortunate he agreed to join us for this episode would be a clear understatement.
Dr. Mattson's email address he mentions in the interview is [email protected]
