The infamous dark tunnel is that period between going from two or three locations, where systems are easier to manage and funding is easier to secure, to the uncharted waters of eight plus locations. 

During this time frame, it's difficult to grow because banks want to see if the CEO is capable of scaling an actual organization rather than just chair hopping.
