In this captivating installment, our hosts delve into upcoming craft beer events and some crazy news about Valor Brew Pub. On the lighter side, Jordan chats with Elliott Johnson of Soul Mega about the next Summer beer release and their  Second Annual MEGAFEST.

On Saturday, July 15, events include the All-American Beer Festival at the Bullpen, the Old Town Pub Crawl in Alexandria with Port City, and Denizen's 9th-anniversary party in Silver Spring. On July 22, head out to Dock 5 at Union Market for the (D)rafts and (C)rafts festival from the DC Brewers Guild and the DC Makers Guild.

But the main attraction in this episode is MEGAFEST, the Black-owned beer festival meets block party in celebration of Soul Mega’s 4-year anniversary, on August 26, 2023.

Beer can taste delicious, but how good can it be if it doesn’t do fantastic things for its community? Josh Chapman thought long and hard about this question. So he started charting a path with Black Narrows Brewing to take simple ingredients from local sources to make delicious beer in Chincoteague, VA. 

Mike shares a pint with Josh, Co-founder and Head Brewer of Black Narrows Brewing. When Black Narrows opened, Josh and his team wanted to set the bar of what local beer should look like. So they decided to follow this principle: find the best local ingredients in season and don’t alter them by much. Josh shares how by this principle, Black Narrows is crafting beer that focuses on its locality and community while being flavorful and delicious to drink.

Leon Harris was stationed in the military in Holland, came home, started homebrewing, and since then, he’s done just about everything in the beer industry. From brewing to helping build breweries from the ground up, Leon Harris is a beloved figure in our local beer scene.

Jordan sits down with Leon to hear his story of becoming a brewer at Port City and his journey to start Black Cave Brewing, a new Black-owned and Veteran-owned brewery in Prince George’s County. Leon shares which Port City beer he always finishes his day with, aka “the Leon Special,” why he started Black Cave, and the stories behind the Black Cave beers we can expect to see in the future.

We all love a fantastic beer can label. So we decided to talk with the person who is the local mastermind behind many of our beloved DMV beer can designs. 

Philip Pilgrim is an elementary school art teacher by day and a beer label artist by night. Brandy sits down with Philip and chats about his art business, Art & Ale, and his journey in creating the most compelling beer can designs. They discuss his recent work, his biggest inspirations, and his dream brewery to design with.
