After the wonderful Meet & Greet with women in craft beverage in DC, we wanted to keep the party going with two women leading the DC Beer scene today. 

Brandy talks with Carly Klima of Port City and Bri DeOrsey of Right Proper Brookland to tell us about their journeys in the industry and the efforts to make beer more inclusive and welcoming. Carly and Bri share their unique experiences in the back-end brewing and front of house. They discuss the importance of support and collaboration among women in the industry, their favorite beers to brew and drink, and what the future holds for women in DC’s beer scene.

Every beer scene needs people willing to teach others and walk them through the beer business. Julie Verratti is this person in the DC Beer community.

Richard, Jordan, and Brandy ventured out to Denizens Brewing the other night to talk with Julie, Chief Beer Officer at Denizens. Julie is incredibly generous with her time and helps people learn how to navigate the beer industry. We shower her with compliments and discuss how the beer community can better support women. Julie also reflects on her time with the Biden administration Small Business Administration and shares how small businesses are faring post-pandemic.

Stroop, There It Is! While it’s our current favorite catchphrase, it’s also the title of one the best beers of the season, a collaboration masterpiece from Black Viking Brewing and Red Bear. We’ve been noticing that Black Viking is crushing it in the DC Beer scene, so Brandy got the scoop with owner Shaun Taylor. To Shaun, the beer business is what someone might call a “cool” business–everyone is having a great time all the time, right? But at the end of the day, it is a business and brand with many moving parts. Shaun shares the story of the Black Viking origin, where the name “Black Viking” comes from, and how Shaun plans on becoming the country's first black-owned, nationally distributed beer brand.

Liquid Intrusion Brewing Company, also known as LIBCo, is indeed intruding – in the best way possible. As the first black-owned brewery in Prince George’s County, founders Andrew and Jasmine Dill are looking to disrupt the brewing market in Southern Maryland. 

Andrew Dill lost his job at a beer bar when the COVID-19 lockdown began, and he was left with a lot of time on his hands. What came next was a nudge from his wife Jasmine Dill, a desire to homebrew, and a widow donating her late husband’s homebrewing equipment. Soon came Liquid Intrusion. Drew and Jasmine Dill join the show to tell us about their current beers, where we can find them, the brains behind the brewing of the African Queen and Her Seven Seas IPA, and their plans to open a brick-and-mortar brewery.

We’re wrapping up a year of beer, so we recount the beer happenings we loved most in 2022, the ones we loved least, and the ones we can’t wait for in 2023. 

Then, Mike celebrates anniversaries with Thor Cheston of Right Proper Brewing Company. Right Proper Shaw is turning nine, while their Brookland location turns seven. Huzzah! Thor shares the accomplishments of Right Proper he’s most proud of and discusses their efforts to reenergize the Right Proper neighborhood after a negative downturn. Then, Mike and Thor talk about the future of the sour program at Shaw, the growth of non-alcoholic beers and if they will be a part of Right Proper’s future, and Thor’s goals for the brewery for 2023.

Well, there’s good beer news, and there’s bad beer news. We’ll start with the bad news. And that is, beloved Rocket Frog Brewing is closing their doors this weekend. 

Richard Hartogs joins the show to tell us about the last few years for Rocket Frog, the highs, the lows, and the difficult economics of brown ales. Richard and Jake discuss: if brown ales are hard to sell off the shelves, what can you do if you make a killer brown ale? And, does barleywine bring life or death for a brewery? But above all, we discuss how we can send Rocket Frog out in style at their farewell party this upcoming weekend. One thing is clear, Richard does not want to be a funeral but a celebration of all their accomplishments. 

In good beer news, Mike Stein played Rudolph the Red-Nosed Beer Deer and dropped off beers for the DC Beer Crew, and they recommend the best batches to listeners. Lastly, the gang details the many holiday markets and events happening at our favorite breweries. Go support your local breweries!

We love when Maryland gains a new brewery, especially in Prince George's County. We’re so excited to welcome Black Beauty Brewery, PG County’s second Black-owned brewing company.

Jordan sits down with Sheldon Goins, founder of Black Beauty Brewery, to hear how a setback during the pandemic led to starting a brewing company. Sheldon graduated with a criminal justice degree and found himself working in IT. But when he comes home, brewing calls his name. We talk about navigating the challenge of licensing, cold weather beers coming down the pike, and which beer styles Black Beauty will feature most.
