  • Has the race to distribute Covid-19 vaccines turned political?
The race to vaccinate the public against Covid-19 has entered its next phase and geopolitics are complicating the matter. There are several vaccines in circulation right now, but only two cleared for use in the EU. A shortage of vaccines across the bloc has been accompanied by high-level anger. A three-way row is on between the UK, the EU and supplier AstraZeneca, which says it cannot fulfil a 400-million-dose order for Brussels. Meanwhile, other countries are turning to Russia, China or India for their vaccines. What's being done to improve access for those in the developing world?

  • Hard times for students: Depression, poverty, isolation under Covid-19 lockdown
The Covid-19 pandemic equals hard times for students. We discuss the impact of lockdown measures on their education and health. There has been a large demonstration in Paris this Tuesday, with students calling for access to their campuses and a more normal type of educational experience. Many have been kept away from lectures since March. We examine the impact this is having on them and look at the wider issues across the field of education.

  • Egypt's revolution, 10 years on: What happened to 'bread, freedom & social justice'?
Ten years on, we are examining the revolution that changed Egypt. The Arab Spring swept through North Africa and the Middle East and with it, several hardline leaders were swept aside. Today is the annual day of the police in Egypt and President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi presided over commemorations of the role of Egyptian law enforcement. A role that many activists say was at best heavy-handed back in 2011 and has continued the same way.

  • Navalny defies Putin: Russian opposition leader arrested on return to Moscow
Alexei Navalny is tonight in custody in Moscow. The Russian opposition leader was arrested immediately on his return from Germany, which has demanded his release. It was in Berlin that Navalny was treated after he was poisoned with Novichok nerve agent in August. Russia denies attempting to kill the man who has become a thorn in the side of President Vladimir Putin. But Navalny's influence is gaining ground beyond Russia's borders since the attempt on his life in Siberia last summer. We take a closer look with our guests in The FRANCE 24 Debate.

  • Trump's second impeachment: US president to face Senate trial for inciting insurrection
Donald Trump makes history as the only US president to be impeached twice. The vote in the House of Representatives saw 10 Republicans flip over to vote against their president. Such is the depth of feeling over the violence at the Capitol last week when a mob of Trump supporters, egged on by the president, marched on Congress, occupying and vandalising the premises. In the violence, five people were killed. We're asking: is this the end of the story or just another beginning?

  • Impeached again: Trump doubles down ahead of Inauguration Day
Is it the final nail in the coffin of American exceptionalism? With the impeachment of Donald Trump comes fresh revelations about those who plotted both outside and in the US Capitol to overturn the result of the presidential election. US democracy may well weather the current storm in Washington, but the certainty that its 240-year old system of government will always prevail while here in France we have had three monarchies, three dictatorships and five republics, that certainty seems well and truly over.

  • Which way for Uganda? Bobi Wine takes on longtime incumbent Museveni
It has been billed as a generational battle. Africa's gaze is turning to Uganda and the tense homestretch to Thursday's presidential election. 38-year-old pop star-cum-opposition leader Bobi Wine is among nine candidates taking on 76-year-old Yoweri Museveni, the former military leader whose National Resistance Movement took the capital way back in 1986.

  • Law unto themselves? Social media block Trump amid calls to regulate Big Tech
Two elections too late? Twitter is permanently banning Donald Trump's account, Facebook has suspended it through Inauguration Day, and other social media are jumping on the bandwagon of curbing false claims of a stolen election. For four years, the US president has been spreading disinformation from the Oval Office. His followers had loudly broadcast on various platforms that they were going to march on the Capitol and they did.
