  • How to reunite the US? Tension, division among Americans awaiting result
With the result of the US presidential election still not final, and the threat of legal action looming large from Donald Trump over mail-in voting and unproven allegations of voter fraud, we examine the process and ask if it's time to change how the US elects its leader. We also reflect on the election and ask where the US goes from here. Joe Biden or Donald Trump – whoever wins – will have a major influence on world events, on the economy, the climate and global peace.

  • And the winner is? America braces for post-election battle
Will it be Joe Biden or Donald Trump? The race to the White House is far from over. Although polls closed long ago, we're now entering a new phase. Two days after the US presidential election, ballot-counting is still under way due to record early voting. But it's contentious, and the longer it goes on, the more the lawyers from both sides will get involved. To break it all down, we bring you another special edition of the FRANCE 24 Debate from Washington.

  • France on two fronts: New wave of terror attacks ahead of return to lockdown
Hours before France goes back into lockdown, it's back to maximum terror alert level. This follows the third terror attack in just over a month, this time targeting a church in the Riviera city of Nice. Three were killed in a knifing spree, a wounded suspect is in custody. After Emmanuel Macron's defence of the republishing of Charlie Hebdo cartoons of the prophet and a boycott movement in the Muslim world, what response to the latest attack?

  • France holds its breath: Can this country withstand another lockdown?
The last lockdown was lifted five months ago but it's still fresh in people's memories. Ever since September when people went back to school and back to work after the holidays, the Covid-19 situation has been getting progressively more serious. For two weeks, this country has had a 9pm to 6am curfew. Until just a few days ago, many people thought the next step would be simply to bring that curfew forward by a couple of hours.

  • Broken peace process? Colombia's indigenous people exposed to increased violence
In Colombia, the Minga Indigena movement converged on the capital Bogota last week to remind the government of its responsibilities in the face of drug dealers, cattle ranchers and dissident rebel groups that four years after a historic UN-brokered deal to end civil war still hold sway over vast swathes of the country's remote interior and continue to kill and intimidate with impunity.

  • Right to blaspheme? Muslim nations launch 'Boycott France' movement
From Morocco to Pakistan, leaders have called out Emmanuel Macron for his defence of the right to blaspheme, with Gulf States even launching a boycott of French products. They say the French president unfairly stigmatised Islam after two recent terror attacks. Macron used blunt words at last week's national tribute for Samuel Paty, the French schoolteacher beheaded over a civics lesson on free speech that included cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed. The brutal murder followed a social media campaign calling for Paty's sacking, supported by a Paris-area mosque which has since been shut.

  • Boiling point for Nigeria? Old guard under pressure after #EndSARS bloodbath
How did overwhelmingly peaceful protests against police brutality turn into a bloodbath in Lagos? The anger is still palpable in Africa's largest city after the army reportedly opened fire on unarmed demonstrators in the city centre. Amnesty International says at least 12 were killed. Why the bloodbath at Lekki Toll Plaza? What response from Nigeria's old guard in the face of a youth-driven movement that's unmoved by the announcement of the dissolution of the notorious plain clothes SARS police unit? Who are the demonstrators who are transcending traditional political fault lines?

  • Hero of the Republic: France honours murdered schoolteacher
His name was Samuel Paty. In the courtyard of the Sorbonne University in the heart of Paris's Latin Quarter, French President Emmanuel Macron is leading a national tribute to the teacher who was beheaded near the gates of his middle school last Friday for giving a civics class on free speech that included Charlie Hebdo cartoons of the prophet. The attack of five years ago on the satirical newspaper was an assault on the values of free speech. Now it's the Republic itself that's been targeted.
