  • Fear of contagion: Coronavirus toll rises ahead of Chinese New Year travel
As China, the world's most populous nation, embarks on its biggest travel week of the year, the first coronavirus case has reached the United States and the World Health Organization is scrambling. Chinese authorities are screening travellers and issuing updates, but critics on social media wonder if Beijing was fast enough off the mark? We ask our panel if China has got this under control as the outbreak, thought to have originated in a fish and livestock market in the central city of Wuhan, brings back bad memories.

  • Luanda Leaks: What happened to Angola's missing millions?
Just in time for Davos: a tale of greed and globalisation. The fortunes of Isabel dos Santos have just taken a further turn south with the Luanda Leaks revelations. Funds were funnelled from Angola's state oil company and other public enterprises, with big name Western consultancies happy to provide their services in the name of wealth optimisation.

  • Kremlin reshuffle: Will Putin reforms guarantee grip on power?
It's a classic Putin move. The master of the Kremlin has caught all comers off guard with the sacking of his cabinet, the kicking upstairs of longtime shadow Dmitry Medvedev, and plans for a constitutional reform that the opposition suspects is all about keeping the reins of power beyond the end of his term-limited mandate in 2024.

  • Trump on trial: Will voters be swayed as impeachment moves to Senate?
In the end, Nancy Pelosi opted to trigger the president's impeachment trial sooner rather than later. The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives has cut short a drawn-out battle with Republicans over the rules of the Senate trial. She's still, though, keeping up the pressure with the release of new evidence of Donald Trump's active bid to pressure Ukraine into digging up political dirt on his top rival for re-election, Joe Biden.

  • Under pressure: How far will Tehran and Washington go?
How quickly the mood can shift in Tehran. This Monday saw a third day of protests over last week's accidental downing of a Ukrainian airliner hours after the Revolutionary Guards fired missiles on coalition bases in Iraq in retaliation for the US killing of Qassem Soleimani. A week ago, we were wondering if Donald Trump had just handed his adversaries a free pass by getting a nation torn apart by the recent deadly crackdown on fuel hike protests to rally around the flag. Now, the gripes of ordinary Iranians over mismanagement and lack of accountability are back with a vengeance.

  • Enough to save face? Iran, US de-escalate but region remains on edge
The United States is dialling back threats of further military retaliation against Tehran after missiles fired at coalition air bases in Iraq failed to inflict casualties. They even appear to have even been forewarned. Donald Trump can brag that he took out Qassem Soleimani, the face of Iranian external operations, with limited consequences so far.

  • Ghosn speaks: Former Renault-Nissan boss hits back after Japan escape
Thirteen months after Carlos Ghosn's shock arrest at Tokyo airport and nine days after his daring escape from house arrest in Japan, the once all-powerful boss of the Renault-Nissan alliance held a press conference in Beirut. Ghosn made good on his promise to name names, accusing Nissan executives of throwing him under the bus in the name of stopping an eventual merger with Renault.

  • US-Iran escalation: Will Soleimani's killing lead to a wider conflict?
The world has entered 2020 with the threat level between the US and Iran at its highest for many years. Mourning scenes in Tehran are at the heart of the matter. Qassam Soleimani, one of Iran's most influential figures, was killed in a US drone strike on January 3. Soleimani led the crack military Quds force of Iran's Revolutionary Guard. He was regarded as the second most powerful man in Iran, and key to Iran's regional reach and influence. His killing is raising important questions worldwide.
