  • Modi by a landslide: Hindu nationalist BJP sweeps elections
Ballots have been counted after six weeks of voting in India. Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP has strengthened its majority after a general election that saw voters punish the once-mighty Congress Party of Rahul Gandhi. Five years ago, Modi promised toilets over temples, development before religion. We discuss identity issues and the policies that lie ahead for a fast-changing nation of 1.2 billion people, but also how India now plays its cards on the world stage.

  • Final blow? Theresa May under pressure ahead of European elections
When British subjects go to the polls on May 23 in European elections in which they never thought they would have to vote, they are likely to turn both on the Conservatives and the opposition Labour party. PM May's attempt at a last hurrah fourth time around with an amended divorce deal before parliament has triggered yet another backbench revolt. One certainty: Nigel Farage will be returning to Brussels. Brexit's biggest cheerleader has a new party that is slated to top Thursday's poll.

  • In theatres everywhere? Cannes and China, the battle for world movie markets
Festival goers at Cannes, pay attention: Donald Trump's move against Huawei could be the first salvo in a new kind of Cold War where one of the main battlegrounds could be the entertainment industry. The saga is unfolding in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival, which for a fortnight every year serves as a launchpad to the global cinema box office. The digital age is already rocking the seventh art, with Cannes holding out against letting films by Netflix compete for the Golden Palm prize.

  • US-Iran brinkmanship: Could war of words spiral out of control?
A tweet can be taken as a meaningless aside, except when it's written by the President of the United States. Donald Trump's social media lack of diplomacy has sent shockwaves across the already troubled terrain of US-Iran relations. We've had the pull-out from the Iran nuclear deal, an Iranian ultimatum to Europe, more sanctions imposed by Trump on Iran, and a US aircraft carrier sent to the Persian Gulf. Could the war of words spiral out of control?

  • Gulf tensions intensify, Trump's ban on Huawei, Europe far-right rally, Eurovision in Israel
Our panel of journalists discuss the biggest topics of the week, starting with the Gulf claim of sabotaged ships and the withdrawal of non-essential US embassy personnel from Iraq. Meanwhile, trade tensions mount between Washington and Beijing with Donald Trump signing an executive order to ban Huawei. In Europe, Marine Le Pen is joining Matteo Salvini in Milan for a rally that brings together the far right. And the Eurovision song contest heads to Israel, a location that seems controversial.

  • The battle over abortion: Alabama ban opens new chapter in bitter fight
It's a tale of two Americas: The same nation that's spearheading the #MeToo movement has a growing number of states that are either banning or severely restricting abortion rights. Alabama's governor has now signed into law an outright ban, except in cases where the woman's life is in danger. Next stop, the courts. Authors of the bill say their aim is to overturn the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v Wade decision legalising abortion. They have already scored major successes in curbing abortion access.

  • Christchurch call: How to curb hate and extreme violence on social media?
Should any internet user be allowed to livestream their deeds? Two months to the day after a white supremacist turned on his bodycam and opened fire in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand's prime minister is among world leaders meeting in Paris for a summit to address online extremism. Jacinda Ardern describes how Facebook took down the video but by then, others had shared it all over the web, on platforms such as YouTube.

  • Ticking time bomb? Cancer lawsuits mount for Monsanto over glyphosate
A California jury has awarded two billion dollars to a cancer-stricken couple that used Roundup extensively. It's the third major ruling in a row against Roundup's maker Monsanto. With dozens of other lawsuits slated, what next for its new parent company, German agro-chemical giant Bayer? Europe's just given glyphosate a five-year extension. Its regulators contradict the World Health Organization's findings and have so far refused to certify the link between Roundup and cancer.

  • Shifting danger zones: French hostage rescue raises Sahel security questions
How to make the Sahel safe? Two French hostages kidnapped on safari in northern Benin are free along with a South Korean and an American. But it came at a price: two elite French navy special forces were killed along with the French couple's driver before them. Six years after French-led forces chased jihadists out of northern Mali, Westerners are only one target in a region where poverty, weak states and land conflicts make it possible for small but determined radical groups to strike.
