  • Macron in China: Much more than a state visit?
France's president is in China for three days, in what might seem like the snapshot of a world order in flux. For starters, there was a press conference - which wasn't the case when Donald Trump recently visited. With the US washing its hands of multilateral deals on trade and climate change, Emmanuel Macron poses as more than French leader. And with Germany bogged down in coalition talks and the UK heading for Brexit, we ask our panel if Macron makes a convincing interim king of Europe. Produced by Daniel BARNEY, Alessandro XENOS, Van MEGUERDITCHIAN.

  • New day for women? Oprah leads Hollywood call for change
They wore black to the ceremony. At the Golden Globes, the biggest female leads in Hollywood answered the dress code call of the new Time's Up collective and delivered rousing appeals to fight sexism and abuse in the wake of the Weinstein scandal. Stealing the show on a night of stars was Oprah Winfrey. The winner of a lifetime achievement award, who herself suffered abuse as a child, she made her own a message to all the little girls watching at home in a moving speech. Produced by Yi SONG, Alessandro XENOS, Van MEGUERDITCHIAN.

  • Macron's world: The French president's ambitious agenda for 2018
What diplomatic battles will the French leader pick in 2018? In his New Year's address to the diplomatic corps, Emmanuel Macron once again positioned himself as anti-Trump by suggesting that dialogue is the only way forward in Syria and Iran. As head of a NATO member with a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, the French president also touted an April conference on the fight against the financing of terrorism. Produced by Charles WENTE, Alessandro XENOS, Van MEGUERDITCHIAN.

  • Olympic Truce? Koreas reopen dialogue as Kim, Trump trade taunts
As Donald Trump trades taunts with Kim Jong-un over the size and ability of their respective nuclear buttons, the North Korean leader has adopted a more conciliatory tone when it comes to Pyongyang’s southern neighbour. The telephone hotline between the two Koreas has been reopened, and there’s even talk of North Korea sending a delegation to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. As South Korean president Moon Jae-In heads towards dialogue, does it mean acceptance of North Korea as a nuclear power?

  • Iran Protests: More than an economic revolt?
In Iran, as deadly anti-government protests entered their sixth day on Monday, at least nine more people were killed in clashes between protesters and security forces. The total number of people killed in the unrest has now climbed to more than 20. There's growing anger over the rising costs of living and inflation. Iran’s supreme leader, meanwhile, blames foreign foes for meddling in the country’s politics. Produced by Charles WENTE, François WIBAUX and Laura BURLOUX.

  • Catalonia regional election: Voters head to polls in bid to solve independence crisis
Today we focus on Catalonia’s regional election, ordered by Madrid after the banned Oct. 1 independence referendum and the jailing of separatist leaders. This was also the first-ever triggering of direct rule provisions built into the Spanish constitution. As Catalonia's political crisis plays out, the rest of Europe is watching. The FRANCE 24 Debate takes a closer look at the situation ahead of the results. Produced by Daniel BARNEY, Alessandro XENOS, Van MEGUERDITCHIAN.

  • After Weinstein and #MeToo: What comes next?
How do mindsets change? Tales of the Hollywood "casting couch" are nothing new, and Harvey Weinstein isn’t the first movie mogul to be accused of exploiting vulnerable actors in exchange for work. In this special year-end edition, François Picard hosts a panel to discuss the #MeToo movement as a watershed moment and how to deal with men who abuse their power. In France, where everyday sexism and harassment can often be passed off as gallantry or a bit of "fun", the problem is particularly acute. Programme produced by Charles Wente and Tatiana Reiter.

  • What has become of the May '68 student movement that changed France?
In 2018, France marks the 50th anniversary of a defining moment in its collective history: The 1968 student protests. But what were they really about? What did they change? And what do they mean for French society today? François Picard hosts a panel to discuss the ’68 protests that involved students and trade unions alike. Programme produced by Charles WENTE and Tatiana REITER.

  • Say cheese: France's dairy dilemmas
The French don't just eat a lot of cheese, they also argue about it: How to taste it, wrap it, cut it and eat it. In this year-end edition of the FRANCE 24 Debate, François Picard hosts a panel to discuss these all-important French cheese do's and don'ts. Programme produced by Charles Wente and Tatiana Reiter.

  • Defining moment? The impact of Trump's big tax shake-up
The House of Representatives has put the final touches on a tax reform bill that's been characterized in some quarters as a whopping big Christmas present to the rich. Despite public opinion opposing the plan by a two-to-one margin, Republicans are rallying behind legislation that should most notably slash the corporate tax rate from 35 to 21 percent. It's about the only issue where Trump and a majority of Republicans agree: the role of government. Produced by Daniel BARNEY, Alessandro XENOS, Van MEGUERDITCHIAN.
