What type of job should you actually look for when you graduate from dental school? Private practice, DSO, Medicaid, public health... there are SO many directions to go, and everyone seems to have an opinion about which one is “best.”

Dr. Haley breaks down the pros and cons of each of these environments and what new dentists should actually prioritize in their first few years of practice. She talks about patient volume, getting enough reps, mentorship, clinical variety, autonomy, compensation, exposure to the business side of dentistry, and how a first job can shape the dentist someone becomes.

Dr. Haley is joined by Dr. Sophia Saad for Part 1 of a two-part conversation all about navigating pregnancy, maternity leave, and new motherhood as a dentist.

Just over one year out of dental school and eight weeks postpartum, Dr. Sophia shares what it was really like going through her first pregnancy while also navigating her first year in practice. She opens up about working through first-trimester nausea, staying active throughout pregnancy, preparing financially for an unpaid maternity leave, communicating with her owner doctor, and deciding how much time she wanted to take away from dentistry after having her son.

They also talk about preparing to return to work as a breastfeeding mom, finding a schedule that allows space for both career goals and motherhood, and the baby products and routines that have made those early postpartum weeks a little easier.
