​As building contracts become more complex, resolving disputes between subcontractors and owner builders becomes increasingly challenging. Misunderstandings around payment terms, timelines or delivery can cause misaligned expectations and painful back-and-forths. Today I’m chatting with Cian Brennan, CEO of Quantum Contract Solutions, to talk about improving understanding when it comes to the business side of construction.

 

An award-winning entrepreneur, Cian has been working on the client side of construction for almost two decades. With unique insight into what’s really going on in the construction industry, he has a deep understanding about the risks people face when entering building contracts, and how they can best protect themselves. We talk about how being good at your job alone is now simply the price of entry - developing a solid set of skills on the business side is crucial in really seeing a business grow. 

 

The longer you’re in the building business, the more likely you’ll encounter a dispute. Cian emphasises the importance of clear communication and a solid contract, as well as the ability to understand the terms and conditions included. 

 

While there’s always an element of risk involved in a build, having a clear dispute resolution process in place will minimise the chance of things really going south. So whatever your role is, it’s time to level up and get familiar with the nitty gritty, knowing this will set you up to see the best possible outcomes for your projects.
