Why is it that diet and exercise leads to precious little reduction in body fat? Weight loss has very little to do with the thermodynamics of exercise and diet, and everything to do with internal metabolic and hormonal regulation.
In this podcast Dr. Petteruti explains the association between free radical inflammation, and the way that it stimulates the growth of fat cells. The role of antioxidants, and the role of NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) in particular in regard to their impact on obesity will be discussed. It is true that excess adiposity stimulates inflammation and a free radical overload. But it has now been recognized that inflammation and free radicals themselves can cause overgrowth of fat cells. Unless the cycle is interrupted, weight reduction can be difficult to achieve.
