  • #212 - Robbie Bosco - Star QB Of 1984 National Championship BYU Football Team Shares His Experience In & Out Of Football
    Guest Bio:
Robbie Bosco was the BYU starting quarterback from 1984-1985 and led BYU to its first and only National Football Championship in 1984.

Bosco, who led the championship campaign became the first member of that 1984 team inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame.

In his two years as a starter for the Cougars, "The Rocket from Roseville" (California) compiled a 24-3 record, breaking nine NCAA records and tying another. Among the most impressive of Bosco's accomplishments as he rewrote the NCAA record book were his 8,148 passing yards over two seasons and the 338 passes he completed in 1985.

The crowning performance of Bosco's career came in 1984 at Holiday Bowl VII; the game featured a gimp-legged Bosco, a fuming Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler, and two BYU fourth-quarter touchdown drives that staked the Cougars' claim to the national championship. After the first non-New Year's Day bowl game ever to determine the nation's number one team, the Cougars were 13-0. And the 1984 season ended much as it began, with an aching Bosco lying flat on the airplane floor, just as he had on the flight home from Pittsburgh after BYU upset the then third-ranked Pitt Panthers, 20-14.

No other season has been more chronicled than 1984, with Bosco trying to live up to the just-completed legends of All-Americans Steve Young and Gordon Hudson. In 1984 and 1985 Bosco emerged from the shadows and took his place among BYU gridiron greats; he was selected All-America by Associated Press, United Press International, The Football News, and The Sporting News during his junior and senior years. The 1984 WAC Player of the Year, Bosco finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting in both 1984 and 1985.

At least two of Bosco's 66 career touchdown passes are indelibly etched in the memory of every loyal Cougar fan - the 50-yarder to Adam Haysbert that beat Pitt and the 13-yarder to Kelly Smith with 1:23 remaining against Michigan - but there were numerous others to David Mills, Glen Kozlowski, Mark Bellini, and Lakei Heimuli.
Bosco opened his senior season by guiding BYU to a 28-14 victory over Boston College in the annual Kickoff Classic. The Cougars went on to an unprecedented tenth consecutive WAC Championship and an 11-3 record; the three losses during Robbie Bosco's starting career (UCLA, UTEP, and Ohio State) were by a total of 13 points.

Green Bay's third-round draft pick, Bosco played two years for the Packers before his NFL career was shortened by a shoulder injury. He served as the BYU quarterback coach from 1990-2003 and served as the varsity club director and the interim head coach for the women’s golf team.

Among BYU's great quarterbacks, Robbie Bosco will always be remembered as the one who brought the national championship home to Provo.

  • #211 - Ivan Castro - Purple Heart Award Winner, Green Beret Was Blinded When Blown Up In Iraq Yet Stayed In Special Forces
    Guest Bio:
Fighting was a practiced routine for Lieutenant Ivan Castro. But when a mortar round struck the rooftop of his sniper’s post in Iraq, he found himself in a battle more difficult than even he could have imagined. The direct hit killed two other soldiers and nearly claimed Castro’s life as well. Mangled by shrapnel and badly burned, Castro was medevac’d to Germany more dead than alive. His lungs were collapsed. He couldn’t hear. One eye had been blown out, the nerve to the other severed.

In the weeks and months that followed, Castro would find that physical darkness was nothing compared to the emotional darkness of loss and despair. Desperate for a reason to live, he eventually fought his way back to health through exercise and a single-minded goal: running a marathon. Once he set his course, there was no stopping him. Stubborn to a point that at times bordered on insanity, he managed not only to recover but to return to active duty. Since 2007, he has run over two dozen marathons, including the Boston Marathon in 2013, where he was one of the runners diverted when the bombs exploded.

Today, Castro helps prepare soldiers for combat, working exactly as if he were “sighted.” Fighting Blind, this frankly told account of his struggle through adversity, the highs and lows and the always bumpy road in between, is a story of hope and perseverance against the odds: an Unbroken for the present generation.

  • #210 - Larnell & Natasha Bruce - Son Was Killed By A White Supremacist In 2015 & Set Up Foundation In Son's Name To Spread Love Over Hate
    Guest Bio:
The Larnell Bruce Jr. Foundation is 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to promoting love over hate, educating the public about hate crimes, helping hate crime victims deal with the trauma and loss during and beyond the conclusion of a criminal court case, and fighting to change laws to make hate crimes a serious crime with the appropriate punishment.

Larnell Bruce Jr., known lovingly as “Man Man” to family and friends, was born September 1, 1996 and grew up in Vancouver, Washington. He earned his nickname early on due to his energy for life. He was a busy, strong boy, tackling projects around the house, not waiting for his dad, Larnell Bruce Sr., to get on it!

Man Man love for football started at a young age and his talent grew as he got older. At one point, he had opposing coaches asking his coach not to let Man Man run the ball down the field.

Larnell was a beloved son, grandson, brother, nephew, uncle, and friend, who loved his family deeply. He cared for his grandparent’s home, labored in service of others and worked at a community center just before he was killed.

On August 10, 2016, Larnell was deliberately struck in a hit-and-run in Gresham, Oregon. He sustained life-threatening injuries and died on August 13, 2016.

Even in death Man Man served others. He was an organ donor. He donated his kidneys, liver, lungs and heart, saving the lives of five people.

His heart was gifted to a father and grandfather in his sixties—a retired Army Veteran.

His right kidney was gifted to a mother of four, currently enrolled in nursing school.

His left kidney was gifted to a married man in his sixties who works in quality assurance.

His liver was gifted to a man in his forties—a father of two teenagers.

His lungs were gifted to a man in his sixties whose renewed health will allow him more time
with his wife and children.

This tragedy was turned into a blessing for so many, and Larnell's final act has been a source of pride and inspiration for family and friends. Now, his family and this foundation will continue to champion this cause by holding fundraisers and speaking about the amazing gifts that come from organ donations.

  • #209 - Hans Struzyna - Member Of The 2016 USA Olympic Rowing Team, Hans Shares What It Takes To Become An Olympic Athlete
    Guest Bio:
"In my 30 years on this planet, I‘ve learned a few lessons that I apply to everything I do. The first is that all goals must be written down and visible on a daily basis. The second is that there’s no such thing as overnight success and consistent work is the only path to success. Finally, everything is the way it is because someone made it that way. So to understand people is to understand the world.

I‘ve applied these lessons to my 12 year rowing career culminating as a member of the 2016 USA Olympic rowing team. After the Games, I had to descend from the metaphorical mountain I‘d spent years scaling and ended up feeling lost for the first few months. Searching for my next climb, I found real estate. I got my license six months later and have been pursuing all avenues of this business ever since. I‘m a Realtor Partner with a Wall Street Journal Top 100 nationally ranked team, The Gunderman Group. We focus on advocacy, risk management and exceeding our clients personal definitions of success. By staying true to those core values, we’re the top team in the East Bay of the Bay Area and sell over $180M per year (with over $1.5B sold in total) with an average price point of $1.2M. I’m also fascinated by real estate investing and completed my first flip during my first year in the business. My wife and I also invest in out-of-state multi family properties. I’m actively looking for my next few deals.

I wanted to share the value of creating your own path and building a life of freedom, so I recently created a podcast called Another Way To Play. I believe that if you trade hours for dollars, you will never achieve true freedom in your life. I bring inspirational and practical content to listeners at their own personal crossroads by interviewing entrepreneurs, thought leaders and industry experts to learn how they achieved freedom in their lives.

I recently got married to the love of my life, Kristin, who is also an Olympic rower and entrepreneur. She runs her own business and loves real estate investing and we are actively building what we call our “business/real estate empire.”

  • #206 - Greg Hughes - Former Speaker of Utah House of Representatives & Current Candidate For Utah Governor Shares His Story
    Guest Bio:
Greg Hughes grew up in a rough blue-collar neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Raised by a single mother, with the help of aunts and his grandmother, Greg was taught lessons of faith, hard work and strength of will.

After serving a mission for his church, Greg moved to Utah to work on a political campaign and ended up staying, attending Utah Valley State College and BYU.

In his early 20’s, Greg started what has become a successful small business doing real estate development and property management. He and his business partner still operate this business today.

In 2002, he was elected to the Utah House of Representatives. In 2010 and 2012 he was elected as the House Majority Whip and in 2014 and 2016 his colleagues elected him as the Speaker of the House. He also served as Chairman of the House Education Committee and he founded the Conservative Caucus.

During his time in the Legislature, Greg passed legislation to implement state spending limitations, reformed Utah’s liquor laws, created a public private partnership early childhood education program that has become a model across the country, has been a leader in education reform, and supported truth in bonding and other spending reform legislation. Hughes was a key figure in passing comprehensive tax reform that lead to a flatter state income tax and $400 million in tax cuts.

He is known as a champion for our veterans running bills and supporting legislation that reflect the gratitude and respect that we all feel for our military men and women. He created the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs, passed a tuition waiver for Purple Heart recipients, passed the Scott B. Lundell Tuition Waiver that provides free college tuition to surviving dependents of National Guard members killed on active duty, passed a property tax exemption for disabled veterans, increased the pay for members of the National Guard, and he negotiated the development of three new veterans nursing homes

As Speaker, Greg worked extensively on issues that would help attract business and increase job availability for the citizens of Utah and he led the effort to relocate the state prison. Despite unprecedented political pressure, Greg stood strong to defeat multiple attempts to expand Obamacare in Utah. He fought to increase education funding at historic levels ($1.7 billion) while cutting taxes. He led the effort to reform Utah’s homeless services delivery model, and he launched Operation Rio Grande to combat the lawlessness that had grown out of control in Salt Lake City. He also led the effort to go after the manufacturers of opioids and increase drug treatment options for those struggling with addiction.

Greg is known for his ability to get things done by bringing opposing sides together to develop unique Utah-solutions to controversial issues such as medical cannabis, justice reform, developing the inland port, and protecting religious freedom while opposing discrimination.

Hughes founded Red Meat Radio in 2008 and co-hosted the Saturday morning show for six years, until 2014. He was also a co-host of KCPW’s “Both Sides of the Aisle” which received a UBEE award from the Utah Broadcasters Association for Best Personalities in 2014.

Outside of his legislative and business experience, Hughes is active in the community. He has coached little league football and he served in many board positions including Chairman of UTA, Summit Academy Charter School, the United Way of Salt Lake, the Pioneer Park Coalition and the Lone Peak Hospital.

Greg has been married to his wife Krista for 25 years. Together they have three children (Sophie, Holden and Reagan) and reside in Draper, Utah.

  • #205 - Brent Bohn - Owner Of 43 McDonalds Franchises Shares His Formula For Success
    Guest Bio:
Today's guest, Brent Bohn, is the owner of 43 McDonald's franchises. He is someone that I've gotten to know really well over the last couple of years. We've gone on trips to Mexico and Paris and I've had the chance and the opportunity to sit down many times with him and talk business and talk about how he built this little empire, one Big Mac at a time. And for anybody that's ever been in the fast food industry or been in the franchise business, then you are familiar with how difficult it is to run even one restaurant, one location. And Brent has 43 currently and he's buying more all of the time. His story is truly one that I think a lot of people build to learn from. It is a grind to be in that industry and it's really something that I love the brand story because he started at the bottom. His father in law had a couple of McDonald's restaurants and brought Brent in, but he had to start literally at the very bottom in the fast food industry and worked his way up to ultimately become partner and start buying his own franchises. And I love being able to share his story because he's been able to do so much with what he's done.
