  • E099 - Russell's Reserve SiB Rye Whiskey
March is when legends are made. As the madness kicks off this weekend, we wanted to honor two legendary distillers in the bourbon world: Jimmy and Eddie Russell. For this week, we uncork a bottle of Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel Rye Whiskey. In this episode, we “talk Turkey,” reflect upon some recent bourbon news, and give our thoughts on retail price increases of our beloved spirits. Will this rye whiskey be as legendary as the men who distilled and bottled it? March is full of surprises so y’all will have to give us a listen to find out.

  • E098 - Maker's Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Black Wax)

Did someone say dusty? You knew it would happen sooner or later, but for the first time in the history of #themashupky - we taste and review a vintage bourbon whiskey. This week, we head back in time to 1998 (and overseas) to sip and review a Maker’s Mark Black Wax “Bourbon” which was made exclusively for the Japanese market. Rumored to be aged approximately 2-3 years longer than the standard red wax Maker’s and coming in at 95 proof, this bottle has become sought after in recent years, especially those getting into dusties. But, should you be looking to add this one to your collection? As we sip this week, we reminisce about 1998 and think about how this expression compares to what Maker’s offers today. Also, we talk Buffalo Trace Distillery expansion. You will definitely want to listen this week as we FINALLY cross over into dusty bourbon territory.

  • E097 - Starlight Double Oaked Bourbon
What comes to mind when you think of bourbon produced in Indiana? Most would probably say MGPI. However, there are many other distillers who make great whiskey and call Indiana home. Huber’s Starlight Distillery was first a family farm and winery, and now it has become a staple attraction of bourbon lovers in Indiana and beyond. This week we taste and review Carl T. Huber’s Double Oaked Bourbon. This roughly four year old bourbon goes through a primary aging process and then is finished in toasted french oak. How will this whiskey stack up against some of the other toasted and double oaked expressions that we’ve tried? Give us 30 minutes of your time and you will find out. As an added bonus, you will get to hear what we think of the new reality show “Power Slap” in the process. Cheers to the weekend!

  • E096 - Blue Run Emerald Rye

Blue Run Spirits burst onto the scene in 2019 when they released some excellent, well-aged bourbon that got the attention of the entire whiskey community. Many wondered if the hype would be short lived. Fast forward to the present, Blue Run is thriving and the company has plans to build their very own distillery in Georgetown, KY. This week, we review one of their newer offerings - Blue Run Emerald Rye Whiskey. Nearly 5 years old and bottled at cask strength, is this silver butterfly laden bottle worth it? The conversation is a lively one with the fellas discussing late night bourbon escapades and some of the new and exciting things that Blue Run is planning for the future. Whether you love Blue Run or are just finding out about the brand, you won’t want to miss this weeks episode.

  • E095 - Very Old Barton 100 Proof Bourbon Whiskey
Hot on the heels of last weeks episode, we have a bottle that has been dubbed by many as the best value in bourbon. Is it a Beam or Heaven Hill product? Nope. It’s Sazerac’s own Very Old Barton 100 proof straight bourbon whiskey. This bourbon is a bottom shelfer that has been a fan favorite budget for years. It used to carry a 6 year age statement and that statement was dropped in favor of a “bottled in bond” designation. The bottle that you can find on the shelf currently has no age statement and simply states that this whiskey is “crafted.” Join us this week as we talk about Steven’s recent trip to Nashville and discuss whether we’ve found the perfect budget bourbon. Also, we give a special birthday shoutout to one of our favorite people in the bourbon community. If it’s Friday, it’s the Mash Up!

  • E094 - StoneHammer Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey
Old StoneHammer was the nickname given to Kentucky’s 10th Governor, Thomas Metcalfe. He was a stone mason by trade and was elected as governor in 1828. Although Metcalfe passed a long time ago, his memory is alive and well in our bottle for this week: StoneHammer Single Barrel Bourbon. This bourbon is a sazerac made product that is specifically sold in Kroger Wine and Spirits shops. Many people underestimated Thomas Metcalfe and he ended up becoming governor. Is there a chance that this often overlooked, nicely priced bourbon might catch us off guard in a pleasantly surprising way? Give us a listen to find out and be sure to tell your friends that our show is best bourbon conversation that they (and you) will hear all week long.

  • E093 - Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked Bourbon Whiskey

This weeks episode takes us back to McCracken Pike in Woodford, County and the annual release of Woodford Double Double Oaked Bourbon (aka DDO). This special limited offering from Woodford Reserve draws thousands of visitors to the distillery each year. We were lucky enough to secure a bottle and decided to crack it to find out if it’s worth the hype. The conversation includes a variety of topics including Pappy in Utah and “classy” bourbon. There is a listener inspired surprise that results in a bonus tasting — you’ll have to listen to find out what we try alongside the DDO bourbon.

  • E092 - Crown Royal Peach Whiskey

Every now and again we like to cheat on bourbon with, well, more whisky. This week, we went deep into the cabinet and found a bottle of Crown Royal Peach Whisky. When this bottled debuted 2019, it was very hard to find. Those that were lucky enough to find a bottle saw signs at the point of purchase that read, “limit 1.” Fast forward to today, Crown Royal Peach Whisky is now one of the best selling in the flavored whiskey category. Made with real Georgia peaches, this spirit is not something we would typically review on The Mash Up. But, we are two wild and crazy guys so you never know what you are going to get. Join us this week as we talk about antiquated running technology, summer drinks (in the winter), and decide if this bottle is a “pass, try, or buy.”

  • E091 - Hancock's President's Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey
Elmer? Blanton’s? Rock Hill Farms? Nope. It’s Hancock’s President’s Reserve Single Barrel Bourbon. Is this Buffalo Trace / Sazerac’s best kept single barrel secret? You’ll have to give us a listen to hear about some of the history behind this bottle as well as if we are going to pass, try, or buy. The lively conversation for this week covers a variety of topics including @liquor_barn_ky return to want to in-person raffles for Pappy and BTAC bottles. We also discuss the recent lawsuit filed by Sazerac against Republic National Distributing (with an assist from @sippn_corn). Happy Friday and happy listening fellow mashers!

  • E090 - Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey
Maryland rye whiskey was a big deal until prohibition brought its production to a grinding halt in the 1920s. Heaven Hill Distillers had the foresight to purchase the brand we are discussing on this weeks episode of #themashupky back in 1982. Pikesville Straight Rye whiskey carries a 6 year age statement and comes in at 110 proof. This barely rye whiskey has won many awards over the years and has been characterized as one of the best rye whiskeys for the price on the market. Join us this week as we discuss bourbon New Year’s resolutions, strange bottle shapes, and how we were both confused by the “Pikesville” name. We’ll let you know how we feel, but would you pass, try, or buy on this bottle? Let us know know below and cheers to the new year!
