  • #109 Know thy self with Rosi Sexton

    In today's episode of the mind set game podcast, I sat down with Rosi Sexton aka The Surgeon.

    She is the UK's first female UFC fighter. But, Five years ago, she retired from MMA competition. Her last fight was on Cage Warriors against now UFC champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

    She had been involved in martial arts since she was at school. She already held dan grades in jujutsu and Taekwondo. In 2000, after 10 years' experience in martial arts, she decided to train in Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as a way of proving to herself that what she had learned was applicable to real life. A clue to the reason for this career change may be found in her comment "The other things I did, the music, the maths, just weren't quite hard enough"

    At the same time, she trained in osteopathy, receiving a degree in that subject from Oxford Brookes University in 2010. She currently practices as an Osteopath, with a particular interest in sports injuries and evidence-based practice. She has written about the problem of performance-enhancing drugs (doping) in combat sports and is a supporter of the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, VADA. She is a spokesperson for SafeMMA, an organisation dedicated to ensuring the safety of competitors, and she runs a combat sports injury clinic.

    For more information about Rosie can be found on her website rosisexton.com, also you can connect with her on Twitter.

  • #107 What exercise can I implement during a busy work day?

    In today's episode of the Mind Set Game Podcast, I discuss that we are becoming more and more sedentary in our life that some are even not taking the time to leave their desks at lunchtime.

    But you might say, James, what can I do in this short time frame to get any exercise of benefit.

    My answer to you would be that you have 3 choices:

    Steady state cardio and by this I mean a light jog for 30mins HIIT session (15-30mins max) Super Intense session lasting about 9 mins (4x 60sec sprint plus 3/4mins recovery in between, my apologies I forgot to mention this in the recording)

    Before I give you more information, Which would you choose?

    Let me break it down for you;

    Boosts metabolism

    The American College of Sports and Medicine said that High-Intensity Interval Training helps you consume more oxygen than a non-interval workout routine. The excess amount of oxygen consumed helps increase your rate of metabolism from about 90 minutes to 144 minutes after a session of interval training. Thus the increased metabolism helps burn more calories at a faster rate.

    Burn calories and fat hours after you leave the gym- When participating in such high-intensity workouts your body's repair cycle goes into hyperdrive. This means in 24 hours after a HIIT workout your body is still burning calories and fat whereas, in steady-pace workouts, you may not.

    Now you know the ins and out which would you choose?
