The Murder Diaries

Lydia “Dia” Abrams was a wealthy and glamorous 65-year-old widow living on a beautiful 117-acre ranch in the idyllic mountain town of Idyllwild, California. From the outside looking in, she seemed to have it all. But on June 6, 2020, after eating lunch with her fiancé Keith Harper, she disappeared without a trace. Her purse, cell phone, pick-up truck, and her dog Ruby, whom she loved so much, were left behind. More than five years later, even after a lengthy police investigation, Dia’s disappearance remains unsolved, and she has never been seen again.

This is the story of Dia Abrams.

When Dia went missing, she was described as being 5’6” tall, 135 pounds, with blue eyes and blond hair. She had a surgical scar on her abdomen and a scar on her lower back extending from hip to hip. Her ears are pierced. She was last seen wearing a yellow shirt, blue jeans, and a black/turquoise windbreaker jacket. She was wearing four rings on her right hand.

Anyone with information about Dia’s disappearance is asked to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office at 951-791-3400. There is a $300,000 reward for any information that leads to solving this crime.

Today on the Murder Diaries, we are honored to sit down with our friend Madison McGhee. She's the creator and the voice behind "Ice Cold Case," a deeply personal and powerful investigative podcast about her father's unsolved murder. Like many of us, Madison grew up drawn to true crime stories, watching shows like America's Most Wanted, but at 16, she learned something that would permanently shift her relationship to those stories. Her father's own death, which she had long believed was due to a heart attack, was actually a homicide. With "Ice Cold Case," Madison brings listeners into the heart of her investigation. It's one that spans decades, family secrets, and her own search for truth. Now she's also launched "LA Crimes," a new podcast exploring historic and lesser known cases in Los Angeles. We're so excited to talk to Madison about the intersection of personal and professional storytelling, the emotional labor behind true crime reporting and what exactly it means to seek justice in the digital age.

On the evening of November 28, 2012, 26-year-old Emma Fillipoff caught an acquaintance’s attention as she stood barefoot, hugging shoes to her chest on a street corner. Uneasy, almost nervous about crossing. She showed other signs of distress too, as she looked over her shoulder time and time again as if she were expecting someone, or something to be following her. Not knowing what else to do, the acquaintance contacted authorities who spent 45 minutes with Emma before releasing her on her own recognizance as she walked into the dark, rainy evening alone… never to be seen or heard from again.

In this week’s episode of Unscripted, Natalie and Paige go deep on Don’t Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever, the new Netflix documentary from the executive producer of Tiger King. The film follows tech entrepreneur-turned-biohacker Bryan Johnson, who’s spending $2 million a year on an obsessive quest to reverse aging and extend human life, and he’s starting with himself.

But what’s driving his extreme lifestyle of strict diets, relentless testing, and science-backed self-experimentation? Is it fear of death, the allure of control, or something else entirely? Natalie and Paige break down the documentary, from the science and the ethics to Bryan’s relationships.
