Every summer I moan these words, "I am so sick of being hot, I am ready for fall…bring on the cooler weather!" Summers in Arkansas are brutal. The humidity is so high so the heat index rises above 100 degrees on multiple days each year. You do not want to go outside and would just rather stay wherever there is Air Conditioner. Fall comes for about 1 week and then it gets cold. Every winter I moan these words, "I am so sick of being cold, I am ready for spring…bring on the warmer weather!" It is a constant cycle of begging for something different. Come on spring!

Overlanding 101 - Choosing the Right Rig

There are tons of questions that you need to answer when looking for and deciding on a rig to build. Personally I drive a Toyota FJ Cruiser. I also have a Honda Adventure Motorcycle I am in the process of building. I also have my eye on a Subaru that I might tinker with.  Three different solid rigs for overlanding that would give me three completely different experiences. Everyone has their own preferences, love and need that must be met, but the main thing is that you get out there and go. It doesn't matter what you have (up to a certain point), what matters is that you go and get the experience. You cannot learn everything you need to know from watching YouTube and asking newbie questions on Social Media. You need first-hand on-site experience and that only comes from making yourself get out there and explore. Without the gear, without the built rig, learning for you.

PLANNING...

There is no all-inclusive paper written or podcast that could possibly include every variation of planning out there. It would be impossible to include everything for everyone but what we can do is lay out some ground rules or guidelines to get you started. Every time you get a new trip or adventure under your belt, you will get better. You will know what you need to take. You will forget less things. You will always be making changes to your setup, your gear and your list of items to take and to leave home. Think about what you thought you had to have and then never used. Leave it at home next time. Make room for other things or just make room. Think about how you can organize better. You can ask others for advice and see what they do. It may be good for you or you may have some new way that someone else has not thought of before. It is trial and error. Just make sure you are prepared as possible before you pull out of the driveway.

Planning...

Different people like different things in life. This varies greatly when it comes to planning a trip. Some people love to be spontaneous and have no plan. Just "fly by the seat of our pants" is part of the excitement that some want. Not knowing where to lay our head is a great way to get the true feel of this vagabond style of living. We have done that and it sure does give you a rush when it comes down to just a few hours of daylight and your search for that place around you to land becomes priority. Others cannot and will not live that way. It would drive them crazy to have to deal with the unknown. Months before departure they are glued to the maps laid out on the table. Months before they set out on their adventure they have sought out and downloaded every mapping app available and have planned routes, stops, camping spots, all the way down to places to stop and eat. Others fall in between the two previously mentioned. They are somewhere in the middle of the planning spectrum in love with both worlds. They have a general plan for a route for the trip, but are open to making changes as the days will come. The attitude of "we can always come back" is in their minds and always part of the plan. I am not sure which category in which you fit, but at some point you will want to check out certain places, check off places on your bucket list, or just point your rig in some direction and go and that might require some form of planning. Let us take a look at the resources that we have available to us that will help this make it easier on us to get this done.

Live Work Wander LIVE on Overland Radio 2/21...

The key turned, the engine came to life, a smile, some goose bumps, hand  on the shifter, ahead of us lay a new life to be lived on our terms.  That moment in our lives we thought came to an end in October 2017 but  after a short hiatus, the road called us out and we resumed our travels  in earnest. We spent 1,386 days on the road and traveled 80,000 miles  before we attempted to head back into civilian life. During that time,  we got to see every coast in the country, ventured south to Mexico, and  north into Canada. We traversed deserts, mountains, plains, forests,  cities and many places in between. The draw of the road, the overland  lifestyle was too strong for us to fight, so we regeared, refocused and  now we’re out here again. MOORE21...They hype was unreal.  The anticipation was overwhelming...and then Mother Nature threw a monkey wrench in the plans.  Was this gonna happen?  Would anyone show up?...It did and it went off like a Chinese Firecracker stuck up your holy britches.  

This is the spark that makes the engine run. This is the key that turns on the fuel that fires the motor that spins the engine for making everything go. This was the fire that needed to be lit under us. 2020 was a hard year. Many could not get out, but here they did. This is exactly the shot they needed to heal their broken spirits.
