I remember walking into the room, scanning all of the eyes staring at me and checking out everything about me. I was new at the school and I was now the focus of attention. Girls giggled and boys laughed under their breath as my self-conscious ran wild with all kinds of thoughts running through my head. "What are they thinking about me?" "Are my pants unzipped?" "Do I have a booger on my face?" It is a terrifying thing for any 9 year old to have to do. There is nothing you have to do or be or have to fit in here. Just be here. Get out there. Come to events. Walk up to anyone and say "hi." You will be greeted here with enthusiasm and welcomed with open arms by most if not all. If not, then try the next campfire. Sure there are mean people in every circle just has we all have that one family member that nobody likes or wants to be around. Everyone is different. But do not give up. The vast majority of those who are doing this love the company of others. It is easy to find friends. It is easy to fit in. You do not have to have the right rig, camper, gear or clothes. You can travel with someone who does while you sleep in your car. You can have everything in the world and be best friends with someone who has nothing. It is truly an all-encompassing lifestyle where fitting in is not a problem. Come on out. Sit down and enjoy the fire. We have plenty of room for more.

Here we are wrapping up season 1 with 40 episodes!  It is amazing that I just started a few months ago while sitting in a High School Parking Lot in Denver, CO while waiting on my wife to land at the airport.  I had some extra time and decided to sit in my vehicle and record my first episode on my phone about my previous 6 days overlanding with my Bulldog Bruiser.  It was comical as he was behind me snoring as I recorded that very first episode.  Now 40 episodes later and I am so encouraged by the listens, the feedback and all of your comments.  You are the friends I have needed for a while now. We do not need all of the gear offered everywhere around us, so the correlation between someone actually being labeled an Overlander and what they have is only an idea that we have drummed up in our own minds. We have convinced ourselves that in order to be "official" we have to "keep up the Joneses." We have convinced ourselves that if we want to fit in, we have to have the latest and best gear out there. This not the case and our mindset needs to be changed. What matters is finding your way. What matters most is discovering that perfect setup for you, whether other people have it or not, and using that setup to enjoy your life as much as possible while you still have time to do so. We are never guaranteed time. We are never promised tomorrow. Today could be our last. Do not waste your time stocking up on gear. Do not waste your time working so much to have that next best thing when that time could be used so much more for discovering new places and making memories. Memories are never made in the driveway. Memories are made actually getting out and living this lifestyle.

Do you know that feeling of accomplishment when we have worked on something for so long and it is finally finished? You hold it. You sit back and look at it admiring your handiwork. You call your friends and brag about it. You takes pictures from every angle and post for the public to ooh and aah over. Many of us can remember the last time that has happened, for we are project managers. We are constantly doing something for ourselves in this lifestyle. If we truly love this lifestyle and are not just in it because it is the going thing, then we understand what it is like to change up our rig, create that new thing, and install that gear that will make our lives out in the wild blue yonder easier than ever before. 

But are you ever completely finished?  I know there are times when we can see the finish line and push harder and harder, we run faster than we ever have to reach it, but it seems like it keeps moving on us. It is an unreachable concept instead of an obtainable reality. We may get there, but I doubt it. As long as gear companies keep making gear and as long as the government keeps printing money, we will always be making changes to our rigs. However, it is fun, exciting and it is part of the lifestyle of being an Overlander. Look for the finish line and be excited when you see it, but reaching it? Well, that is for another sport, not for me.
