Short little Christmas episode talking about a recent live I watched by Forrest Cooper of [Redacted] and the importance of establishing tradition.
Stress comes in many forms and can't be avoided. Especially in a marriage, the beauty is found in confronting stress and overcoming it together. I took a new approach to stress after reading Discipline Equals Freedom by Jocko Willink. That perspective shift benefitted me most in my marriage and helped my to become a better husband.
After a couple different conversations with some old friends I was struck by the idea of integrity and one individuals relentless adherence to what was right. After asking my audience on Instagram what "Integrity" meant to them I wanted to sit down and discuss my thoughts on the matter.
It's Tuesday and you just had an awful day at work. Flat tire on the way home, check engine light is on. You walk in the house and your wife is already mad about something, who knows what. Your phone dings.... overdraft..... again.... 3rd time in two months. You feel your chest get hot, you start to throw your things down a little harder than usual. She walks by and has the audacity to ask you why you were home SO late.... Fight starts in 3.... 2.....
If you are married I know you know what I am talking about. You've been there time and time again. Every time it's a 3 hour yelling match with at least a 3 day silent treatment and NO progress.
Next time... when you start to throw your keys down, or your chest gets tight.... Stop. Step Back. Head Up. Deep Breath. DETACH.....
Continuing the conversation on rhythm, turning from a marital point of view to approaching rhythm through a lens of goals and priorities.
Many people try to achieve some perfect level of "balance" in their responsibilities. Be it work, school, wife, kids, fitness, etc... We always have to juggle responsibilities and perfect "balance" is a pipe dream. A far more achievable goal is rhythm. Establishing a routine, communicating effectively, and honoring your word goes a long way to quell the frustration and anger typically present when couples try and fail to create what they see as "balance".
Jocko Willink has changed countless lives using the phrase "Discipline Equals Freedom". It is his MO, his message, maybe even his identity. He has given speeches, dedicated podcasts, and written books about the phrase and the meaning behind it. However, I think it is grossly misinterpreted by most people who hear it. I myself have spent years using the phrase with the most ignorant interpretation possible. This morning I finally understood the true meaning behind that phrase.
An episode highlighting the magnificent results of hard work, the amazing efforts of my wonderful Wife DeEllen, and the importance of exercising Jocko-Level discipline in your marriage.
A big turning point in my life occurred when I began to view myself as a steward of the Truth. Being a good steward of the Truth requires not only a relentless search for what is True but also a keen awareness for how you share that Truth with those around you. Building good relationships and being a good example are fundamental aspects of finding, holding, and sharing Truth.
I hop on the internet again to review and provide color commentary on random marriage advice. This time the article focuses on couples that have been together for 25+ years. There's a lot of good info in here I agree with and of course, some that I don't!
