Doug Novotny is a practicing Clinical Psychologist, with 25 years clinical experience and 14 years teaching and supervising therapists at all levels. Born in 1961 at the tail end of the baby boom, Darleen Lev experienced firsthand the seismic shifts from the so-called “patriarchy” as a child in the 60s, to the sanctioned hedonism encouraged by the sexual revolution as a teenager in the 70s, to the sexual panic wrought by the AIDS epidemic in the 80s and early 90s. After completing an MFA in fiction writing at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop in 1994, Lev traveled to South Korea to teach English. Korea’s “patriarchal” culture filled Lev with nostalgia, and she began to question the feminist “choices” that had come to seem self-sabotaging. The concept of “choices” is a theme in Lev's recently completed novel, Sexodus, which explores the sexual politics that have pitted women against men. Gabrielle and I met again to talk about how sex and sexuality were taught in her graduate program, and to get into some analysis of one of the most commonly used textbooks for "multicultural counseling" that is taught as a requirement in mainstream counseling programs. Gabrielle Turner is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) practicing in the Austin, Texas area where she lives with her husband and three cats. She is a 2022 graduate of Texas State University's Professional Counseling Program. Starting her graduate program after raising three sons into their teens, she was prepared to see the infiltration of social justice and other left-leaning ideologies that has characterized higher education in the decades since she completed her undergraduate work. Even so, she was surprised at the level of social justice indoctrination present in the curriculum and especially in the students populating the program. Suzannah Alexander returned to grad school to pursue a Clinical Mental Health Counseling master’s degree at the University of Tennessee. What she encountered, however, was a program deeply entrenched in Critical Theories ideology. During her time there, she experienced significant resistance, particularly for her Buddhist practice, which was labeled as invalidating to other identities. After careful reflection, she chose to leave the program, believing the curriculum being taught would ultimately harm clients and lead to unethical practices in the field.Since then, she has dedicated herself to investigating, writing, and speaking out about the troubling direction of psychology, higher education, and other institutions that seem to have lost their way.
