Eilish McColgan is one of the best distance runners in the world. The 32-year-old is a 3-time Olympian, a European and Commonwealth Games champion, and holds numerous British records. Last weekend, she added another record to that list, running the 10,000m in 30:00.86 as she prepares for her marathon debut in London next month.
But despite her impressive athletic resume, Eilish frequently finds herself fending off social media trolls who are more focused on her appearance than her results. Coached by her mom, Olympic medalist Liz McColgan, Eilish knows the impact of strong female role models. In honour of International Women’s Day, this week we chat about Eilish’s phenomenal career, and how she’s using it to create a better future for girls in sport.

In this episode we chat through his race, his goals for Tokyo and beyond, and what it takes to hang with the best in the world. Next, Kate and Maddy cover a plethora of impressive results from the last 2 weeks!

Tréchelle Bunn is an athlete and activist. Until recently, she wasn’t much of a runner. But in May of 2021, when 215 unmarked graves were discovered on the former grounds of the Kamloops Residential School, Tréchelle decided to take action. She founded a Healing Walk and directed the first Reconciliation Run Half-Marathon, using movement as medicine to empower her communities and reclaim space. Tréchelle is also the recipient of the Student Community Builder Award at last year’s Indigenous Awards of Excellence, and is featured in the Under Armour Diversity Series with Canadian Running Magazine.

Each week Canadian Running staff writer Maddy Kelly and Shakeout host Kate Van Buskirk update you on the exciting world of running. In the first month of the new year we have already seen several Canadians set World Leads on the track, including Kieran Lumb in the 3000m and Regan Yee in the mile. At only 18 years old, Christopher Morales-Williams set a blazing new Canadian U20 indoor 300m record and NCAA lead. The Houston Half and Full Marathons saw national records go down and many strong performances by our Canucks, while the Valencia 10K started in mayhem. And the excitement is just getting started, with track and road races galore on the schedule over the coming weeks!
Just over a year ago, Luc Zoratto wrote a post on LinkedIn sharing with the world that he was celebrating 5 years of sobriety. The runner from Toronto didn’t expect what happened next: his post went viral, viewed by millions of people. In our first new interview of 2023 Luc talks about his journey to sobriety and his evolution from running-adverse gym rat to Boston Marathon qualifier. In light of the recently updated Health Canada guidelines regarding alcohol consumption, he offers advice for anyone looking to reevaluate their relationship with drinking.

We’re kicking off 2023 by revisiting one of our favourite episodes from 2020 with coach and marathoner Paddy Birch. Paddy is an Irish ex-pat who didn’t start running until he moved to Toronto a decade ago. But in that time he transformed himself from a mid-pack rec runner into an elite marathoner. During the pandemic, Paddy decided to mix things up and test himself over some shorter distances. As we start a new year, his experiences and words of advice seem particularly apt. Here is part of our conversation about the physical, psychological and emotional benefits of exploring new events.

In this episode we revisit some of the top moments from 2022 and take a look forward to the year ahead!
Each week Canadian Running staff writer Maddy Kelly and Shakeout host Kate Van Buskirk update you on the exciting world of running. This week on The Rundown we're joined by Julie-Anne Staehli. Staehli had a breakthrough year in 2021, winning the Canadian 1500m title and competing at her first Olympic Games in the 5000m. She built on that momentum this year, adding national road 5K and cross-country 10K victories to her resume, despite battling injury. In this episode Staehli describes the radical changes she made this year, both personally and athletically. She explains how she's learned to relax into the identity of being ‘elite’. And she shares why these factors are paramount to her ongoing success.
Correction: This episode of The Shakeout Podcast refers to Julie-Anne Staehli as the 2022 Canadian outdoor 1500m Champion (1:39 and 2:44), when it should instead refer to her as the 2021 Canadian outdoor 1500m Champion. We apologize for this error.

The cross-country championship season is in full swing. This week is bookended by the NCAA Division 1, and Athletics Canada Cross-Country Championships. And going back just over a week, on a blustery day in Halifax, Max Turek and Glynis Sim crossed the line victorious at the U Sports XC Championships. They lead their teams - the McMaster Marauders and the UBC Thunderbirds - to 1st and 2nd, respectively. While their seasons have been vastly different, both Max and Glynis talk about the impact that long-term development, thoughtful coaching, and strong team culture have had on their success.
