Two Canadian women stormed their way to podium finishes at this year's Western States Endurance Run. Ailsa MacDonald and Marianne Hogan placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively at the world’s oldest 100 mile trail race in California. This is the first time that Canadians have reached the women’s podium since Ellie Greenwood set the course record in 2012. We spoke with Ailsa and Marianne a couple of weeks ago about their preparation, execution, and reflections on their stellar performances.

The 2022 World Athletics Championships wrapped up in Eugene on Sunday, capping off a thrilling 10 days of competition. There were several highlights from our Canadian team, including Cam Levins' brilliant marathon performance. Cam finished 4th in 2:07:10. This was not only a personal best and improvement on his own Canadian record of over 2 minutes, it was also the highest finish ever by a Canadian at the World Championships. In this episode we speak with Cam about the lessons learned from last year's Olympic Games, completely overhauling his training, and why he has long felt that he belongs with the very best runners in the world.

This episode is a rebroadcast from 2020, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Harry Jerome’s 100m world record. Jerome went on to set 6 more world records, compete in 3 Olympic Games, and win international medals for Canada. The Harry Jerome International Track Classic continues to be one of the most competitive meets in Canada. The 2022 edition took place last week and was no exception, so we thought it was time to revive this episode.
We speak with author Norma Charles about the life and legacy of Harry Jerome, and about why we should celebrate him far more than we do. In 2017 she published a young adult novel entitled “Runner: The Life of Harry Jerome, World’s Fastest Man”. This book was written in the hopes of sharing Jerome’s story and legacy with readers across the country, particularly young people who might look to him as a role model.

Reid Burrows spent much of his teenage and adult life chasing big athletic dreams. But that chase led him to some dark places. Reid is an ultra trail runner and former elite triathlete. He’s also a freelance writer. Last month he wrote a piece for the Trail section of Canadian Running Magazine documenting his mental health journey, and the complicated role that running has played in it.
May is mental health awareness month. As it comes to a close, we share Reid’s story in his own voice. We spoke with Reid last week, as he was preparing for his next adventure.
