To kick off January, National Learn to Ski & Snowboard month, we talk with Peggy Hiller, the CEO of PSIA-AASI. PSIA-AASI is a professional membership organization that includes over 32,000 snowsports instructors. As the CEO, Peggy is responsible for the national entity, there are also 8 regional entities. 

Peggy tells us about the history of PSIA-AASI, the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating people how best to teach skiing and snowboarding.  The organization focuses on deveoping the teaching skills and people skills needed to be a great snowsports instructor. 

We learn about the certification levels and process, and the various specialty skill courses offered. Peggy recommends that when booking a lesson we request “a certified instructor”, which means the instructor has completed some PSIA certifications. 

Peggy also tells us about her trip to Levi, Finland to attend a global ski industry event called Interski. The event brings together industry experts from 35 countries to share learnings and best practices for all things snow sports.

In this episode we talk with Brianne Manz, ski mom of 3 (ages 14, 12, 10) and founder of Stroller in the City. Brianne has tons of great insights to share, including all sorts of details on her recent family Club Med ski trip. Brianne skied a little as a child, but it wasn’t until she met her husband that she got back on snow in Park City. When their children were old enough to ski, Brianne realized she needed to take lessons so she could keep up with all of them. As a family of 5 living in NYC, they have a storage unit to keep all the gear during the off season. 

Brianne tells us about starting her blog/website (pre-Instagram!), Stroller in the City, that covers all things mom, family travel, beauty and fashion. She gives us some insights into what it mean to be an influencer, how she works with brands and makes it all work for her family. 

We were so excited to learn about the family’s ski trip to Club Med La Rosiere in the French Alps. The resort is located on the border of France, Switzerland and Italy, they flew into Geneva and Club Med provided transportation to the resort.  Brianne shares all about her experience from the rooms, to ski rentals, and most importantly the food and drinks and ski conditions. The all inclusive resort rate includes room, food, kids club, even lessons and gratuities! There are also lots of other non skiing activities.  Read her full review here.

WARNING: THIS EPISODE TALKS ABOUT A FATAL SKI ACCIDENT.

In this episode we talk with Kelli Johnson, ski mom and co-founder of the Snow Angels Foundation with her husband Chauncy. Kelli joined us from her home in Thermopolis, Wyoming, about 4 hours from Jackson Hole.

Kelli shares the story of her family’s Christmas Eve 2010 ski trip that ended in tragedy.  Kelli was skiing with her 5 year old daughter, who had fallen and Kelli was helping her put her ski back on. A snowboarder going 50-60 MPH collided with Kelli and her daughter. Kelli’s daughter was thrown 30 feet and she passed away later that day. Kelli talks about the 3 months she spent at Craig Hospital in Denver, recovering from a traumatic brain injury. 

Kelli tells us the story of starting Snow Angel Foundation, to work to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again.  We loved the foundation’s “Ride Another Day” video, that brings the whole story and message together. Snow Angels Foundation has presented at the National Ski Patrol convention, at many resorts and has an active social media presence.  Kelli still loves to ski, she wants all of us to have fun on the slopes, but she also believes that safety education and awareness can prevent future injuries.  January is National Ski Areas Association Safety Month, so look for events at your local mountain.

In this episode we talk with Ann Garcia, ski mom, Certified Financial Planner and author.  Ann is known in the financial industry as “The College Financial Lady”, helping families plan for their children’s education. 

Ann learned to ski at age 3 in Lake Tahoe, and after a harrowing first ski trip, her family became ski hippies, packing up their VW bus and heading out to different destinations from Wyoming to Utah.  Ann loved skiing from the start and later taught her twins to ski. She reflects on some of the special times she’s shared with her children at Cooper Spur (Mt. Hood, Oregon).

Ann walks us through her career path and tells us about her blog that later became a book, How to Pay for College.  Ann has twins, a boy and a girl, they have both recently graduated from college and have started their careers. Ann tells us about navigating the college path with two very different children.

We get some great tips about talking to our kids about the cost of education, college loans and other financial topics. It’s important for a family to be on the same page with their priorities as they start the college exploration path.  Ann recommends we check out the net price calculator tool that is available on all college websites. 

We get some great insights into the broader college scholarship landscape and athletic scholarships.  There are a lot less athletic scholarships, so if you have to pick between a private coach or a private tutor, Ann says go with the tutor!  

And bringing it back to skiing, Ann gives us some tips on how to save money for family ski trips, while also saving for college and retirement. It all starts with a budget, without a budget we can’t make the right financial decisions.
