  • Inside Releaf, Australia’s largest medicinal marijuana clinic | #607

Australia’s medicinal marijuana industry is poised to explode. Leading the charge is cannabis entrepreneur Gary MacKenzie who is the co-founder of Releaf, the first and largest clinic and dispensary franchise in the Asia Pacific region. It’s a very chilled episode 607 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

    A little more about Releaf’s co-founder Gary MacKenzie …

Today’s guest is a successful entrepreneur and marketing professional with over 25 years of management and CEO experience across technology, direct marketing, outsourcing and digital content with a focus on building brands.

And that’s exactly what he’s done with the Releaf brand … From scratch, building it to the first and largest medicinal marijuana clinic and dispensary in the Asia Pacific region.

As one of Australia’s leading cannabis entrepreneurs, Gary has become somewhat of a figurehead in an industry that's just starting to find its feet and gain acceptance amongst a community that is divided as to its benefits and values.

And that’s where my interest lies. How does one start a business in a relatively new industry, full of red tape and where not everyone is supportive of it being legal.

Now I was hoping this interview would have a greater focus on the business of starting a legal, medicinal marijuana business in Australia, however as you’ll hear, Gary is a huge believer in the health benefits of his products, so he talks quite a bit about that. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as you’ve heard me rattle over the years about the fact that the best marketing is a great product.

Let’s go and meet Releaf founder Gary MacKenzie …

  • How to create a lucrative dropshipping business with minimal outlay | #606

Looking for a new business idea? Maybe a new revenue stream is appealing? Or are you searching for a cheeky little side hustle? One with minimal set-up costs and requires you to hold no stock. If you answered “Hell yeah!!” then drop everything, as you’re about to discover the ins and outs of dropshipping with one of Australia’s best. It’s a ship-hot episode 606 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

A little more about Dropship Break Thru’s Jon Warren …

I’m excited about today’s topic and guest for two main reasons.

Life’s getting expensive and we’re all looking for ways to make an extra quid. Dropshipping can produce that with minimal outlay.

And my guest has mastered the art and science of dropshipping, and as a result lives an envious lifestyle by the beach.

In simple terms, Dropshipping is selling other people’s physical products online.

And Jon Warren is one of Australia’s dropshipping specialists.

In 2014 he launched his first dropshipping business, which grew to seven figures in 24-months whilst he was still working for the man. He sold it three years later, having produced $4M in revenue at a 20% margin.

Since then he’s launched three more dropshipping businesses, all of which have reached seven figure annual revenue with super healthy margins.

John now shows peeps like you and I how to do it with his online dropshipping course - That link will get you some seriously good bonuses you won't find elsewhere.

Time to get excited team … Here’s Jon providing us a deeper explanation of the dropshipping business model and why it’s so good.

  • Going big (versus playing small) from day one set Fortress Melbourne up for success | #605

Right off the bat, today’s guest made a critical business decision. To launch Australia’s biggest eSports and gaming brand, he was going to go big, real big from day one. No pussy footing around. No waiting for this to happen in order for that to happen. Nope. He just went fucking big (his words, not mine) from day one. It’s a game-on episode 605 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

A little more about Fortress Melbourne’s Jon Satterley …

OK, time to fess up. I know very little about the eSports and video games industry, despite it being bigger than Hollywood and the music industry combined. It’s fucking huge!

Yeah, I grew up with an Atari in my bedroom, and to this day I have a sit down video game machine with about 40 games on it from the 80s … from Space Invaders to Pacman to Donkey Kong and everything in between.

But these days, top games are earning more than Hollywood blockbusters. Grand Theft Auto V has raked in North of $6 billion compared to James Cameron’s Avatar, the highest grossing movie ever at $2.8 billion!

And now there are dedicated arenas, like Toronto’s Esports Arena, that seats 7,000 screaming gamers, as they watch their heroes compete for prize pools in the millions of dollars.

So, to find out more about this relatively new but burgeoning entertainment industry, I contacted Jon Satterley, the co-founder of Fortress Melbourne. Fortress occupies 2,700 sq m inside Melbourne’s prestigious Emporium Shopping Mall, and has to be seen to be believed with gaming rooms, an eSports arena that can seat 1,000, it’s got bars, VIP booths, arcade alleys, even a room full of board games (old school!).

So sit back as Jon takes us inside one of the world’s biggest entertainment industries, but also explains where the idea for Fortress came from, and why he and his business partner decided to go, and I quote, fucking huge from day one.

  • How to price anything with The Pricing Lady Janene Liston | #603

How to price anything is tough. And something every business owner doesn't want to get wrong. So I thought I'd get The Pricing Lady in to help us all optimise our pricing strategy. It’s a priceless episode 603 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

A little more about Janene Liston AKA The Pricing Lady

Now, from what I can tell, pricing is one of those business activities that freaks the majority of business owners out. Agree? And if you get your pricing wrong, it can have a major impact on your growth. Which raises so many questions like …

How do you best decide what to charge?

Should you copy your competition’s pricing?

When should you include prices on your website?

When, if ever, should you discount?

Are you charging too much? Too little?

Luckily Janene Liston AKA The Pricing Lady has answers to them all. Plus more! She’s a genius at making sense of how to price your goods or services, as well as how you should speak, act and market your brand to achieve the optimal price. Now, Janene is an engineering graduate, and has a deep interest in bridges, which begs the question … how on earth did she become a world specialist on pricing?!

Hey business owner. That’s you … Yeah, you! Today’s guest has one bit of advice for us all … 'Live and breathe only what you love'. Heard it before? Me too! Thought it was a bit unrealistic? Me too!  Afterall, we’ve all got to make a quid. Well, we’re about to be proved wrong. And that’s not a bad thing. It’s a glass-half-full episode 602 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

But two things especially piqued my interest in wanting to chat with her. One is her unwavering philosophy around only doing what brings you joy … in business and life generally. And on a more practical level, I wanted to know how she overcame a cyber security attack when NighttQuarter’s Instagram - its number 1 form of marketing - was compromised in a very big way a few months ago. • How to build a cult-like following for your business with Forecite Helmet's Alfred Boyadgis | #601

In 2013, industrial designer Alfred Boyages had (in his own words) a seriously lucky motorcycle accident. Whilst recovering from a banged-up knee, he conceptualised the idea of a smart helmet; one that could help riders foresee what’s up ahead. Now all he needed was an army or riders to help him perfect it. Forecite Helmets was born and to this day, has a cult-like following. It’s a super smart episode 601 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast.

A little more about Forcite Helmets' Alfred Boyadgis

Like so many brands, industrial designer Alfred Boyadgis' business was born out of an unfortunate first-hand experience. In 2013, he took a slide on his Yamaha while riding through an oil slick, seriously injuring his knee.

With a keen interest in wearable technologies, and given the availability of sophisticated tracking technology, Alfred was convinced that there must be a way to combine these to allow motorcycle riders to foresee upcoming hazards, enabling them to take evasive action before they became a danger.

So, far from being the end of a journey, Alfred’s “lucky accident” sparked a new one. He teamed up with fellow graduate, Julian Chow, and sharing a mutual passion for motorcycle culture as well as innovative design, the pair brought to life the first iteration of what would become the Forcite MK1 smart motorcycle helmet. And a very sexy beast it is!

All they needed now was an army of riders to help them perfect it. And they got that in spades, with the Forcite Helmet brand now having a cult-like following.

We start off with Alfred taking us inside the mind of a motorcycle rider …

One of the things I’m passionate about is helping you identify additional revenue streams for your business.

That’s why I decided to get international business lawyer, and the founder of Dearin & Associates, Cynthia Dearin on to the show. For the last 23 years she’s been on a mission to help business owners to scale internationally and amplify their impact in the world. What a good mission!

  • Serial entrepreneur Wayne Hamlet's motto is 'Never, ever give up' | #598

In January 2021, COVID forced serial entrepreneur Wayne Hamlet’s event hire business into liquidation. Two months later, he declared bankruptcy, losing everything, and took a job as a real estate agent. Not one for giving up, Wayne launched an idea with huge potential. In fact, if you’re a business owner, then you need it. It’s as simple as that! It’s a ridiculously inspiring episode 598 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast with host Timbo Reid.

A little more about Smile Fred’s Wayne Hamlet …

If you’re a long time listener, you’ll know I tend not to interview owners of businesses in the start-up phase. There’s plenty of other podcasts doing that, plus I want to make sure you only get learnings from established business owners, who’ve got the runs on the board.

However, today’s guest is in start-up mode. So why’d I break the rules?

Because Wayne Hamlet’s story is super inspiring, and I actually want to give him a leg up.

He’s a serial entrepreneur who’s not afraid to have a crack. Unfortunately to date, after starting three businesses, his efforts have been rewarded with little more than experience.

Making matters worse, in January 2021, COVID forced his event hire business into liquidation. Two months later, he declared bankruptcy, losing everything, and took a job as a real estate agent.

Not one for giving up, at the age of 50, Wayne and his wife decided to roll the dice one more time and start Smile Fred, an online greeting card and gift box business that makes it ridiculously simple for you to send personalised cards and gifts within 5-minutes from wherever you are. An idea that every single one of us could use to show gratitude to our clients, suppliers, staff … anyone! Basically, it’s a business idea that makes the world a better place.

By the way, this chat may contain a trigger for some of you, as Wayne’s business journey certainly hasn’t been all roses. Who’s has?! If you’re doing it tough, and don’t have anyone to download to, then please call Lifeline or your local mental wellbeing support service.

Now …  Instead of starting with Wayne answering a question, take a listen to the audio from this video that appears on Smile Fred’s website. It not only explains how Smile Fred works, but why it exists and a little bit of Wayne’s back story.
